Windows 11 does not normally place every installed app on the desktop. To add one, create a desktop shortcut rather than moving the app itself. The most reliable method works for traditional desktop programs, Microsoft Store apps, and apps that do not expose an obvious executable file.
Use Run → shell:AppsFolder → Create shortcut. Windows then asks whether to place the shortcut on the desktop.
Method 1: Add any installed app to the desktop
This is Microsoft’s general Windows 11 procedure and is the best option when you are unsure where the app is installed.
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter shell:AppsFolder. The lowercase form, shell:appsfolder, also works.
- Press Enter. The Apps folder opens with installed applications listed.
- Select the app you want to add to the desktop. You can type the first letter of its name to jump to matching apps.
- Press Shift + F10 to open the app’s context menu. Alternatively, right-click the app.
- Select Create shortcut.
- When Windows asks whether you want to create the shortcut on the desktop, select Yes.
A shortcut with the app’s name and icon now appears on the desktop. Double-click it whenever you want to launch the app.

Why this method works for Store apps
The Apps folder is not limited to conventional programs installed in C:\Program Files. It lists applications installed on the device, including Microsoft Store apps and programs whose executable files are difficult to locate.
Do not browse to C:\Program Files\WindowsApps as a normal shortcut-creation step. That folder is protected, and the Apps folder provides the supported way to access installed-app entries without navigating it directly.
Method 2: Drag an Office app from Start to the desktop
Microsoft documents a quicker drag-and-drop method for Office programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Press the Windows key.
- Select All apps.
- Find the Office program.
- Left-click and hold the program name, then drag it to an empty area of the desktop.
- Release the mouse button.
Windows creates a desktop shortcut. This may also work with some other applications, but do not treat dragging from All apps as a universal Windows 11 method. If an app will not drag to the desktop, use shell:AppsFolder instead.

Method 3: Create a shortcut for a file or document
If you want a desktop icon for a document rather than the application itself, create the shortcut from File Explorer.
- Open File Explorer with Windows key + E.
- Browse to the file.
- Right-click the file.
- If Create shortcut is visible, select it.
- If it is not visible, select Show more options, then select Create shortcut.
Windows may create the shortcut in the file’s current folder and ask whether you want to move it to the desktop. Confirm the prompt if it appears.
A file shortcut opens the document with its associated application. It is different from an app shortcut: deleting the shortcut does not delete the original file or uninstall the application.
Start menu, taskbar, and desktop shortcuts are different
Windows 11 offers several ways to make an app easier to open, but they do not all create a desktop icon.

| Option | Where the app appears | Creates a desktop shortcut? |
|---|---|---|
| Pin to Start | Start menu | No |
| Pin to taskbar | Taskbar | No |
| Create shortcut | Desktop | Yes |
To pin an app to the taskbar, right-click its program name or tile, select Show more options, and select Pin to taskbar. That gives you a taskbar button, not a desktop icon.
How to add a shortcut to the Start menu’s All apps list
A desktop shortcut does not automatically add the app to Start’s All apps list. All apps is populated from shortcuts stored in the Start menu’s Programs folders.
To add a shortcut for only your Windows account:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter shell:programs and press Enter to open the current user’s Start menu Programs folder.
- Copy or create the app shortcut inside this folder.
To add it for every user on the PC, open Run, enter shell:common programs, and press Enter. You can also open the parent Start menu folders with shell:Start Menu for the current user, or shell:Common Start Menu for all users. Then open the Programs subfolder and place the shortcut there. You may need administrator permission when changing the all-users folder.
Why an app can have a desktop shortcut but not appear in All apps
The desktop and Start menu use separate locations. A shortcut placed on the desktop does not populate All apps. If an app is missing from All apps, its installer may not have placed a shortcut in either of these Programs folders:

Common problems and fixes
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| Create shortcut is not visible | In AppsFolder, select the app and press Shift + F10. If the compact menu still does not show it, look for the command in the full context menu. Make sure you selected an app entry rather than an unrelated folder or file. |
| The shortcut was not placed on the desktop | Repeat the AppsFolder procedure and choose Yes when Windows displays the desktop confirmation prompt. |
| The app is not in AppsFolder | Confirm that the application is installed for the current Windows account, then check Start → All apps. If it is absent from both places, the installation may be incomplete or the program may not have registered an application shortcut. |
| Dragging an app from Start does nothing | Drag-and-drop is not dependable for every app. Use shell:AppsFolder and Create shortcut. |
| The icon is missing or appears as a blank page | Right-click the shortcut, open Properties → Shortcut → Change Icon, and select an available icon. Restarting Windows Explorer can also refresh stale desktop icons. |
| The desktop is empty even though shortcuts exist | Right-click an empty area of the desktop, select View, and make sure Show desktop icons is enabled. |
| The shortcut opens an error | The app may have been moved, removed, or updated in a way that invalidated the shortcut. Delete the old shortcut and create a new one from AppsFolder. |
