To add an SEO Editor in WordPress, first check whether your SEO plugin provides that role. Yoast SEO has offered SEO Editor and SEO Manager roles; if your installed plugin does not provide one, create a narrowly scoped custom role or use a role-management plugin. Give the user only the capabilities needed for the work.
Choose the right way to add SEO access
The best option depends on whether your SEO plugin already defines a role and what the person needs to do. WordPress roles are sets of capabilities, not fixed levels of seniority. The built-in Editor role can publish and manage posts, including posts created by other users, so it may be broader than necessary.

Assign Yoast SEO’s SEO Editor role
Yoast Academy’s 2023 course material says Yoast SEO introduces SEO Editor and SEO Manager roles, separating SEO editing from broader plugin settings and features. The exact labels or screens may differ by version, so confirm them in the installed plugin rather than treating older course directions as current UI documentation. Yoast Academy
- Create or confirm the user’s account. A user needs a WordPress account before you can assign a role.
- Open WordPress user management. As an administrator, locate the user in the site’s user-management screen.
- Choose the appropriate SEO role. Select SEO Editor if the person needs SEO editing but not broader plugin settings. Choose a broader role only when its additional access is required.
- Save and verify access. Have the user confirm they can perform the intended SEO tasks and cannot access unrelated settings they do not need.
Create a custom role when the plugin does not provide one
WordPress provides the add_role( $role, $display_name, $capabilities ) function to register a role with a set of capabilities. For an existing role, get_role() retrieves its role object, and add_cap() can add a capability. Consult the WordPress Plugin Handbook on Roles and Capabilities and the WordPress roles and capabilities documentation for the API and permission model.

There is no universal capability list for an SEO Editor. Which permissions are appropriate depends on the plugin and the work: editing metadata, managing redirects, bulk editing, or working with taxonomies and custom post types may each require different capabilities. Start with the tasks, then grant only the capabilities those tasks require. WordPress’s guidance is direct: “Only grant the capabilities required for the tasks the role is intended to perform.” WordPress documentation

Test the role with a non-administrator account and check each required content type and SEO action. If you change a role later, review the expected capabilities before applying changes; WordPress cautions against unnecessary repeated role changes.
Use a role-management plugin
A role-management plugin can help when you prefer a visual editor over custom PHP. A capability may grant access well beyond a single SEO screen. For example, WordPress says edit_theme_options can provide access to the Site Editor and other theme-related administrative functionality; it is not an SEO permission and should not be added casually. - List the specific tasks the person must perform before assigning capabilities.
- Check the SEO plugin’s own permission model, especially for redirects, bulk edits, custom post types, and taxonomies.
- Test using an account with the new role, not an administrator account.
- Revisit the role when plugins, site workflows, or content types change.
For developers, permission checks should be based on capabilities rather than relying only on a role’s name. WordPress documents current_user_can() for checking whether a user has a capability; privileged plugin operations should enforce appropriate capability checks.
