To add LinkedIn’s official share button to WordPress, embed LinkedIn’s JavaScript Share Plugin where the button should appear. For a button on every post, generate its data-url from that post’s permalink; for a single page, use its public URL. Then check the page’s Open Graph metadata so LinkedIn can build an accurate share preview.
Choose where and how the button should appear
LinkedIn’s standalone Share Plugin uses a JavaScript embed and an IN/Share element. Its data-url sets the page visitors will share; LinkedIn also allows the value to be omitted so visitors can create their own shares. The official instructions are in LinkedIn’s Share Plugin documentation.
- One page: Add the embed to that page and set
data-urlto its public URL. - Recurring posts: Generate the URL dynamically so each post’s button shares the post currently being viewed.
- Several social networks: Consider a multi-network plugin such as AddToAny, which lists LinkedIn among its supported services. This is a third-party alternative, not LinkedIn’s standalone embed.
The embed determines the sharing action, not whether LinkedIn can retrieve the page and create a complete preview. That depends on the page’s metadata and accessibility.
Add the official button to one page
Place LinkedIn’s embed where you want the button to render. Replace the example URL with the public URL of the page visitors should share:

If you want visitors to choose what to share, LinkedIn says you can leave data-url blank. See the official plugin instructions for the documented embed.
Use the current post URL on recurring posts
A fixed URL would send every post’s button to the same page. For post-by-post placement, the WordPress-specific approach demonstrated in WPBeginner’s walkthrough inserts the embed with PHP and uses get_permalink() to obtain the current post’s URL. It wraps the output with esc_url().

PHP must run in a PHP execution context. Pasting PHP into an ordinary paragraph or WordPress HTML block will not make WordPress evaluate it. The walkthrough shows managing the snippet with WPCode instead of editing a theme’s functions.php; that is an optional snippet-management route, not a LinkedIn requirement. Follow the walkthrough’s content-filter example, and configure it to run only on the content where you want the button.
- Choose the insertion method. Use a PHP snippet that runs through WordPress if the URL must change for each post. A snippet manager such as WPCode can manage the code without adding it directly to the theme file.
- Use the current permalink. In the embed’s
data-urlvalue, outputget_permalink()and escape it withesc_url(), as shown in the walkthrough. - Set placement. The walkthrough demonstrates inserting the button before or after post content. Choose the location that suits your layout and limit the snippet to the intended content.
- Check a published post. Open the front end and verify that the button appears in the intended position and that its rendered URL is the permalink for that post.
Check the LinkedIn share preview
The button starts the share flow; it does not guarantee that the preview will contain the right title, description, or image. LinkedIn’s shareability guidance calls for Open Graph tags including og:title, og:image, og:description, and og:url. LinkedIn’s URL troubleshooting guidance says its share box relies on oEmbeds and/or Open Graph Protocol; without them, the preview may be missing or use other content.

- Confirm the tags describe the page visitors are sharing, especially its title, description, image, and URL.
- Make sure LinkedIn can retrieve the page and image. A site that blocks access or an image stored in a protected location can prevent LinkedIn from fetching it.
- If you have just changed preview metadata, allow up to 48 hours for LinkedIn’s cache to refresh before checking again, as its troubleshooting guidance advises.
When a plugin may be a better fit
If you need LinkedIn alongside several other networks or prefer dashboard-based placement and customization, the AddToAny listing on WordPress.org describes a multi-service plugin that includes LinkedIn. Its documented installation route is Plugins > Add New, search for addtoany, then install and activate it. Review the plugin’s current settings and compatibility for your WordPress setup before relying on it.
Use LinkedIn’s embed when the goal is specifically its official button and share flow. Use a multi-network plugin when managing multiple services and their placement in one plugin better suits the site. No comparative performance result is established by these implementation sources.
