To add an image to a WordPress sidebar, first check whether your site uses a classic theme with widget areas or a block theme. In a classic theme, open Appearance > Widgets, choose the sidebar, and add an Image block. In a block theme, make the change in the Site Editor instead; block themes do not use the traditional Widgets screen.
Choose the right editing screen
Your active theme determines where sidebar-like areas are edited. In a classic theme, widget areas are managed through the Widgets screen. In a block theme, equivalent layout areas are edited in the Site Editor.
- Appearance > Widgets is available: Open it and look for the sidebar or other widget area you want to change. The theme determines which areas exist and their names.
- The Widgets menu is absent: Your site may use a block theme. Open the Site Editor and edit the relevant template, template part, or pattern that controls the layout.
WordPress documents this distinction in its Block-based Widgets Editor guide. Theme and plugin customizations can change labels or available controls.
Add an Image block in a classic theme
- In the WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance > Widgets.
- Select the sidebar or widget area where the image should appear. If the theme lists several areas, choose the one used by the pages where you want the image to show.
- Add an Image block to that area. The Widgets Editor works with blocks much like the post editor.
- Choose an image source: upload a file from your device, select an image already in the Media Library, or insert an image URL.
- Set the image’s alternative text. Describe useful information conveyed by the image; if it is purely decorative, use the appropriate decorative-image setting when available.
- Save or update the widget area if prompted, then view the site and confirm the image appears in the intended location.
WordPress’s Image block documentation covers image sources and settings. Exact save labels and controls can differ between WordPress versions and themes.

Pick an image source
| Source | When to use it | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Upload from your device | You have an image file ready to add. | The file is added to the site’s media collection. |
| Media Library | The image is already stored on the site. | This avoids relying on another site to keep a remote file available. |
| URL | You want to display an image hosted elsewhere. | The image can stop displaying if the original is moved, deleted, or no longer shared. Use only images you have permission to use. |
WordPress warns that externally hosted images depend on the source remaining available. If you have the rights to use the image, uploading it or selecting it from the Media Library is generally more dependable than linking to a remote file.
Use the Site Editor with a block theme
Block themes do not provide the traditional Appearance > Widgets screen. Instead, open the Site Editor and locate the template, template part, or pattern that controls the area where you want the image. Add an Image block to the appropriate layout and configure its source and alternative text there. The exact location depends on how the theme organizes its templates and parts.

Use a Text widget in the classic interface
If your site presents the original classic widget screen rather than the block-based Widgets Editor, a Text widget can contain text, images, and HTML. Open the target sidebar, add or configure a Text widget, and insert the image using the controls available in your installation or permitted markup. WordPress documents this option in Manage WordPress widgets; the controls can vary.
On sites using the block-based Widgets Editor, older or third-party widgets that have not been converted to blocks can be managed through a Legacy Widget block. WordPress also documents the Classic Widgets plugin as an opt-out that restores the original widget interface.
