Show AI skill with evidence, not just a tool name. Describe a real task, what you did with AI, how you reviewed or corrected its output, and the deliverable or outcome you can verify. That evidence can come from a job, coursework, volunteering, or an independent project—not only an AI-focused role.

What AI skills should you put on your résumé?

List tools and techniques that you have actually used and can discuss in an interview. The right skill depends on the job: a relevant tool or method may belong in your skills section, but a bullet in your experience or projects section should show what you did with it. The UC Davis Career Center recommends highlighting skills developed through part-time work, volunteering, and student projects, not only through formal roles (Highlighting Your Skills).

  • Name a specific tool or method only when you have hands-on experience with it.
  • Choose skills that connect to the role you want, such as using generative AI to organize source material or reviewing AI output for accuracy.
  • Do not imply that you built, deployed, or maintained an AI system if your experience was limited to using a consumer chatbot.

A skills list is a useful index, not proof by itself. Back it up with a project or experience bullet that explains the work.

How to write an AI résumé bullet that shows real work

Use this adaptable structure: Action + task + AI tool or method + human review or verification + actual result or deliverable. Not every bullet needs all five parts. Include the details that make your contribution clear and verifiable.

  1. Start with your action. Say what you personally did: organized, drafted, compared, checked, or revised.
  2. Identify the task and tool. Name the work and, when useful, the specific AI tool or method.
  3. Explain your judgment. Show how you checked, corrected, edited, or adapted the output rather than presenting it as automatically reliable.
  4. State the real result. Name the finished document, analysis, project, or other deliverable. Use a measured outcome only if you can explain how it was measured.

These are templates, not claims about real candidates. Replace every bracket with facts you can substantiate:

  • “Used [AI tool] to organize [real source material] into a first-pass [deliverable]; checked [specific facts or criteria] and edited the final version for [audience or purpose].”
  • “Built a [course, volunteer, or personal] project using [AI tool or method] to [task]; reviewed outputs against [criteria] and delivered [actual artifact].”
  • “Compared [actual résumé] with [target job description], identified [supported skill gap], and revised [specific section] to reflect documented experience.”

Keep each bullet specific enough that you could explain your process and show the work where confidentiality allows. If you have no measured result, describe the deliverable instead of inventing a percentage, time saving, volume, or quality improvement. Wesleyan’s Gordon Career Center warns that AI may add numbers or accomplishments that are not true (Using AI Tools on Your Resume).

Where to find examples if you have not had an AI job

Look for relevant work you have already done. The best example is not necessarily the most impressive-sounding one; it is the one that connects to the target role, makes your own contribution clear, and has a deliverable you can verify or discuss.

Experience source When it can help What to make clear
Paid work You used an AI tool or method as part of a job task. Your responsibility, the review you performed, and the work product—without sharing confidential details.
Coursework A class assignment or project involved relevant AI-assisted work. The project context, your individual contribution, and the finished artifact.
Volunteering You applied a relevant skill while supporting an organization or community. The task you undertook and the useful, verifiable output.
Independent project You have practice but no workplace example to draw on. Label it clearly as an independent project and describe what you actually built or produced.

University of Michigan’s Career Center includes project descriptions among its résumé resources, while UC Davis notes that student projects and volunteer work can develop skills employers value (University of Michigan Resume Resources; UC Davis Highlighting Your Skills). Do not present a practice exercise as professional deployment or production experience.

How to tailor AI skills to a job description

Use the job listing to decide which of your documented skills to emphasize—not to create experience you do not have. University career centers and tool guidance describe AI as a possible aid for reviewing résumé language against a role, not a guarantee of passing a screening system or getting an interview (UC Davis: Using AI in Your Materials; Meta: How to Write a Resume with AI to Land the Job; University of Illinois: Using AI in Your Career Journey).

  1. Compare the job description with your résumé and project notes. Identify relevant skills or terms the employer uses.
  2. For each possible keyword, find a real example from your experience that supports it. Leave out terms you cannot substantiate.
  3. If you use an AI assistant to review the match, provide only the résumé material and job-description text needed for the task. Ask it to identify supported overlaps and possible gaps, and to quote the source résumé bullet for each suggestion.
  4. Check every suggestion against your own records. Remove unsupported claims, then rewrite the wording in your own voice.

Follow the rules of your employer or institution, and do not put confidential, personal, or restricted information into a tool unless you are permitted to do so. Providers’ privacy practices and settings differ, so no single privacy rule applies to every tool.

How to keep AI-assisted résumé claims accurate

Verify every factual detail before submitting. Microsoft’s Word guidance says to use real career examples and not change factual details such as dates, job titles, responsibilities, or achievements (How to Write a Resume with AI in Word). Brown University’s Career Center also cautions that generative AI can produce false or unrelated information and recommends using real examples from your background (Using AI in Your Job Search).

  • Check names, dates, titles, responsibilities, results, and technical descriptions against your records.
  • Remove any accomplishment, metric, or skill that you cannot explain or substantiate.
  • Keep the final bullet true to your role: distinguish what the tool suggested from what you decided, verified, or delivered.
  • Ask yourself the UC Davis Career Center’s self-check: “Am I using AI to improve my work rather than do the work for me?”
