It gives you a screen to use near an Echo speaker, but it does not add a display to the Echo or turn the tablet and speaker into one paired device. Check your tablet’s exact generation and software support before relying on this option.
What Show Mode does—and what it does not do
Amazon describes Show Mode as a way to use a compatible Fire tablet as a visual display for Alexa. In Show Mode, Alexa responses appear full-screen, and you can interact with Alexa from across the room. Amazon’s Show Mode instructions explain how to enable it.
The tablet remains a separate device. Amazon’s documentation does not describe connecting a screen to an existing Echo, or using the Echo’s microphones or audio hardware through the tablet. You can place the tablet beside an Echo, but treat each device as having its own Alexa interaction unless you have independently confirmed a different setup.
Check whether your Fire tablet supports Show Mode
Compatibility is specific to the tablet’s model generation, and Amazon’s U.S. support list also sets software requirements. Use the model and generation shown in your tablet’s settings, then compare them with Amazon’s current Show Mode compatibility list before buying a tablet or troubleshooting setup.

The generations above reflect Amazon’s U.S. help page; do not assume another model, generation, region, or software version will work. The compatibility list also does not establish that every supported tablet is currently sold.
Enable Show Mode on a compatible tablet
- Confirm the model and generation. Check the tablet’s device information, then compare the result with Amazon’s compatibility list and its minimum software requirement for that model.
- Update the tablet. Install an available software update if the tablet is below the listed minimum.
- Switch to Show Mode. Use Quick Actions on the tablet or the Alexa app, or ask Alexa to switch modes. Amazon documents these options in its Show Mode instructions.
- Position the tablet where you can see it. A stand or holder can angle the separate screen toward you; it does not add compatibility or connect the display to the Echo.
Decide how to position and charge the tablet
A generic adjustable tablet holder can make a Fire tablet easier to view near an Echo. It is only a physical stand: it will not enable Show Mode on an unsupported tablet or make the Echo control the tablet’s screen.

Amazon’s Show Mode Charging Dock is a legacy accessory with limited compatibility. Amazon lists it for Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10 (7th Generation), and Fire HD 8 (8th Generation), subject to software requirements. The dock holds and charges the tablet and can switch it to Show Mode when Automatic Mode Switching is enabled; it should not be assumed to fit newer Fire tablets. Review Alexa hands-free privacy settings
Amazon says certain Fire tablets support always-ready Alexa hands-free under specified conditions, such as when the screen is on, the tablet is connected to power, or it is in Show Mode. Amazon’s Fire tablet Alexa FAQ says audio is streamed to the cloud after wake-word detection and describes indicators and controls for hands-free behavior and the microphone or camera. Check your tablet’s Alexa and device settings to review those controls before leaving it ready to respond.

When an Echo Show is the better fit
If you want a screen built into the Alexa device rather than a separate tablet beside an Echo, an Echo Show is the integrated alternative. Amazon describes Echo Show screen uses including visual Alexa responses, video, camera feeds, and photos in its Echo device guide. Its Echo Show 8 and 11 guide covers setup through the Alexa app and newer smart-home screen features.
For a practical choice, weigh whether you already own a supported Fire tablet, whether its exact generation and software qualify, whether a separate tablet and Echo meet your needs, and how you will place and charge the tablet. Check local prices and availability at the time you decide; the cited Amazon documentation does not establish current prices.
