Try parsing the complete model response as JSON first. Only if that fails should you use a narrowly targeted regex to extract one expected, unambiguous fragment; then parse that fragment again and validate its shape and values before using it. Regex can recover a known wrapper or field, but it is not a safe general-purpose parser for nested JSON.

Use a parser-first recovery sequence

Keep the raw response intact until normal parsing has been attempted. If the runtime provides finish or error metadata, capture it alongside the response; truncation or a generation error may explain malformed output and can affect whether recovery is appropriate.

  1. Parse the full response. Pass the complete response to a standards-compliant JSON parser. If parsing succeeds, validate the parsed value against your application’s requirements.
  2. Classify a parse failure. Decide whether the failure matches a stable, known surface case, such as a documented wrapper around one expected JSON object. Do not use extraction to guess where arbitrary nested JSON ends.
  3. Extract only one expected candidate. If the failure is a case your contract explicitly covers, apply an anchored, constrained regex and require exactly one match. If there is no match or more than one, treat the result as ambiguous.
  4. Parse the candidate again. A regex match does not establish that the extracted text is valid JSON. Send it through the JSON parser.
  5. Validate application rules. Check the expected object shape, required keys, types, allowed ranges, and any rules linking fields to one another. Use the result only if all checks pass.
  6. Fail closed when recovery is uncertain. Return a structured parse failure, or make a bounded request for a corrected response. Do not silently fill in missing values or accept the first of several possible fragments.

In pseudocode, the boundary should look like this:

parse_model_json(raw):
    try:
        value = json_parse(raw)
        return validate(value)
    catch ParseError as original_error:
        candidate = extract_one_expected_fragment_with_anchored_regex(raw)
        if candidate is absent or ambiguous:
            return parse_failure(original_error)

        try:
            value = json_parse(candidate)
            return validate(value)
        catch ParseError as fallback_error:
            return parse_failure(fallback_error)

The extraction function should implement a documented output contract, not attempt to identify any JSON-shaped substring in arbitrary prose. For arbitrary nested structures, use a parser-aware scanner or a purpose-built parser rather than adding increasingly complex regexes. The llama.cpp parsing documentation describes JSON parsing, AST generation, and partial parsing for streaming input.

Choose between generation constraints and post-generation recovery

Regex fallback is a defensive boundary after generation. When your deployed runtime supports an appropriate structured-output mode, you can also constrain output during generation. These approaches act at different stages and solve different parts of the problem.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Approach Where it acts What it helps constrain What remains your responsibility
Full-response JSON parsing After generation Whether the complete response is syntactically valid JSON Required fields, types, ranges, and application rules
Narrow regex fallback After a full-response parse fails One explicitly expected, unambiguous fragment or wrapper case Re-parsing, semantic validation, and rejecting ambiguous or incomplete candidates
Runtime structured output During generation A format such as JSON, a schema, a grammar, or another supported constraint Runtime and model compatibility, parsed-output checks, and application-level correctness

Runtime support varies by software and version. llama.cpp’s server documentation describes plain JSON and schema-constrained response formats. vLLM’s structured-output documentation lists JSON, regex, choice, grammar, and structural-tag modes. Ollama’s structured-output documentation covers JSON and JSON Schema-based output. Check the interface and capabilities of the runtime version you actually deploy rather than assuming these options are interchangeable.

Ollama’s API documentation advises: “It’s important to instruct the model to use JSON in the prompt. Otherwise, the model may generate large amounts whitespace.” That prompt guidance is useful, but it does not replace parsing the response. Constrained output can improve syntactic conformance; it does not prove that values are truthful, complete, safe, or consistent with your application’s rules. Parse and validate at the application boundary even when generation is constrained.

Handle unresolved failures without hiding them

When neither normal parsing nor the narrow fallback produces one valid, validated object, preserve the failure as a failure. Retain the raw response for diagnosis where your data-handling rules permit, return a structured parse error, or make a bounded correction request. A retry should not become an open-ended loop, and a correction request should not authorize the application to invent required data.

Record which route was taken and whether validation passed. Avoid logging sensitive prompts or full response bodies unnecessarily; use the minimum diagnostic detail needed for your environment. Before relying on a fallback in production, test representative malformed and truncated responses from the actual model and runtime combination. No universal recovery rate or latency figure follows from the documented runtime features.
