Use the documented load.jsdelay setting to make wkhtmltoimage wait a specified number of milliseconds after the page loads before producing the screenshot. The official settings page gives 1200 milliseconds (1.2 seconds) as an example. It also says the wait can end sooner if page JavaScript calls window.print(), so the delay is not always a guaranteed minimum. See the load.jsdelay setting.
What the delay does
load.jsdelay is a fixed time allowance, measured in milliseconds. The setting description says the wait begins after the page has loaded, rather than when the wkhtmltoimage process starts. For example, 1200 means 1.2 seconds after the page load point.
The setting description also says wkhtmltoimage waits for that amount of time or until JavaScript calls window.print(), whichever happens first. As a result, a configured delay does not guarantee that the full interval will always elapse.
Set the delay for your wkhtmltoimage build
The settings reference documents the underlying option as load.jsdelay, but it does not show a command-line flag spelling. Check the help output for the exact option supported by your installed binary before adding a CLI argument:

wkhtmltoimage --helpUse the option and syntax shown by that build to set the delay to a millisecond value such as 1200. Because packaged builds can differ, do not assume a flag spelling from another version. If you are configuring wkhtmltoimage through a wrapper or library, consult its documentation for how it exposes the underlying load.jsdelay setting.
When a fixed delay is not enough
A fixed wait only gives the page more time; it does not confirm that a particular asynchronous request, image, or JavaScript widget has finished. Increasing the value may help when the page typically needs longer, but it cannot reliably detect completion of a specific frontend operation.

If the page controls its own timing, JavaScript can call window.print() as a signal that it is ready, which the setting documentation identifies as an early end to the wait. If a dynamic-JavaScript site remains unreliable, the wkhtmltopdf project maintainer recommends considering Puppeteer or one of its wrappers. That is maintainer guidance, not a guarantee that it is the right choice for every workflow. Read the project status guidance.
Troubleshoot early or incomplete screenshots
- The screenshot appears before the configured interval: Check whether page JavaScript calls
window.print(), which can end the wait early. Also verify that your wrapper is actually passingload.jsdelayto wkhtmltoimage. - A widget is still loading when the screenshot is taken: A longer fixed delay may give it more time, but elapsed time is not proof that the widget’s request completed. If the page can signal readiness, use its own readiness logic; otherwise consider a browser automation tool suited to the site’s dynamic behavior.
- The CLI rejects the option: Run
wkhtmltoimage --helpon the target machine and use the spelling and syntax reported by that installed build. The settings reference establishes the setting name but does not verify a CLI flag spelling. - Behavior differs between machines: Confirm each installed version and package. The project’s downloads page lists stable series 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020; check the target binary rather than assuming all distributions behave identically. The downloads page warns against using wkhtmltopdf with untrusted HTML and advises sanitizing user-supplied HTML and JavaScript, warning of complete server takeover. Treat untrusted input as a security concern in the relevant wkhtmltopdf context; do not pass untrusted HTML or scripts to the tool without appropriate safeguards.
