Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo show a countdown between lessons, add it to the video your encoder sends to YouTube. In OBS, use a Browser Source that loads a countdown webpage, or play a pre-made countdown video as a Media Source. Put the timer above your study visual in the scene, then switch to it during breaks or arrange lesson and break clips in a playlist. YouTube scheduling does not create the timer; it is part of the outgoing OBS video.
Choose a countdown method
| Method | What you prepare | Best fit | Transition considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser Source | A countdown webpage, such as a local HTML file or an overlay service | When you want to adjust the timer without rendering a new video | Show the source in your lesson scene, or switch to a dedicated break scene. The timer itself does not automate the lesson schedule. |
| Media Source or VLC playlist | A pre-rendered countdown video; VLC Video can play an ordered playlist | When the break duration and appearance are fixed in advance | Playlist looping is available, but the exact lesson/break cycling depends on your OBS scene and source workflow. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear. |
OBS documents Browser Source as a browser surface, not a built-in countdown widget. Its Text Source can render text and read a text file, but the documented source does not provide a dynamic countdown feature. See the OBS Browser Source, Media Sources, and Text Sources documentation.
Set up a countdown in OBS
Option A: Display a webpage timer
- In OBS, create or select the scene used for your study stream. Add your study visual first.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a Browser source. Choose whether to load a URL or a local file, then provide the countdown page. The timer page must come from you or an overlay provider; OBS does not supply the countdown content.
- Move the Browser source above the study visual in the source stack so it appears in front. Resize and position it where it will be readable without obscuring important lesson content. OBS’s Sources Guide explains source ordering and positioning.
- For breaks, either show the timer source in the existing scene or create a separate break scene containing the countdown and study branding. Switching scenes is a manual action unless you have separately configured an automation workflow.
- Test the text at the size and position viewers will see. Confirm that the timer starts at the intended duration and that the break scene returns to the lesson scene when you expect. OBS recommends testing settings before the first stream in its Quick Start Guide.
Option B: Play a pre-made countdown clip
- Create or obtain a countdown video with the break duration you need, then add it to a break scene using OBS’s Media Source.
- If you want an ordered set of lesson and break clips, use the VLC Video source and add the clips to its playlist. Install VLC first; OBS only shows this source when VLC is installed.
- Check clip durations, audio behavior, readability, and what happens at the end of playback. The source documentation describes media playback and playlist looping, not a complete 24/7 lesson scheduler.
- Test the transition back to the lesson scene. Do not assume a playlist will switch scenes or restart your whole broadcast unless your particular scene/source configuration is set up to do so.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide notes that first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available.
- In the Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key as a credential: do not show it in the scene, include it in a public overlay, or share it.
- Start the encoder from OBS. If you scheduled the broadcast, wait for the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room, check the countdown and lesson-to-break transition, then click Go live as directed by YouTube’s workflow.
- Watch the preview long enough to verify that the timer is visible, legible, and synchronized with your intended break. Scheduling is for the YouTube broadcast and reminders; the timer remains part of OBS’s composed output.
YouTube distinguishes a broadcast from the stream that carries the encoder output in its Live Streaming API documentation. That is why configuring or scheduling a broadcast does not, on its own, generate an on-screen countdown.
Plan for the “always-on” part separately
A countdown solves what viewers see between lessons; it does not ensure an encoder can run indefinitely. YouTube’s encoder help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. That guidance does not establish that one live session can remain uninterrupted forever. Build an explicit continuity plan for restarts and interruptions, and check YouTube’s current live-stream rules before relying on a long-running session.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a PC-based stream, test the complete lesson-and-break sequence before leaving it unattended. Confirm your chosen scenes or playlist behave as intended, that OBS remains connected, and that you can recover the broadcast if the encoder or YouTube connection stops.
Troubleshoot common countdown problems
- The timer does not appear: Check that the Browser or Media Source is enabled and visible, and that it sits above the study visual in the source stack. For a Browser Source, verify the URL or local file path and preview the page directly.
- The timer is hidden behind lesson content: Move it higher in the OBS source list, then resize and reposition it. OBS draws higher sources in front of lower ones.
- The timer is static rather than counting down: A standard Text Source is not a dynamic countdown. Use a countdown webpage in a Browser Source or a rendered countdown clip.
- The break does not start or end automatically: A timer overlay is visual content, not a lesson scheduler. Switch to a dedicated break scene yourself, or configure and test a playlist/automation workflow appropriate to your setup.
- The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC, then check the Sources add menu again. OBS requires VLC for that source to appear.
- YouTube preview is blank or the broadcast will not start: Confirm OBS is using the current YouTube server URL and stream key, and that live streaming is enabled for the channel. If this is the first live stream, YouTube says enabling access can take up to 24 hours.
- The broadcast starts but the timer is wrong: Check the timer’s configured duration and the actual media clip length, then run a full test from lesson scene through break and back before broadcasting.
Keep the study stream safe and reliable
- Use lesson recordings, music, images, and other material only when you have the rights or permission to stream them. A countdown overlay does not change the rights status of the content underneath it.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Test the visual hierarchy, timer readability, audio transitions, and scene changes in YouTube’s preview before asking viewers to rely on the schedule.
- Do not treat a scheduled broadcast as a substitute for a restart or continuity plan for a long-running channel.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want an OBS computer and home connection to stay on, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud. For a study stream, upload your lesson and break recordings in the order you want them played; StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
