You can activate Windows 11 without manually entering a product key if the device already has a valid digital license for the installed edition. CMD cannot create a license or bypass activation, but Microsoft documents an offline process that uses an Installation ID and a Confirmation ID. If you have no valid license, you’ll need to obtain one.
Check activation and troubleshoot
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- If Windows 11 is not activated, sign in with an administrator account and select Troubleshoot.
- Follow the prompts to try to restore activation with a digital license. If the device recently had a significant hardware change, use the troubleshooter’s option indicating that the hardware changed recently.
The Troubleshoot option is available when Windows is not activated. Associating a digital license with your Microsoft account can help with reactivation after a hardware change.
Check the installed Windows edition
A digital license or product key must match the installed Windows edition. For example, a Windows 11 Home license does not activate Windows 11 Pro.
From an elevated Command Prompt, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Get-CurrentEdition
You can also check the edition at Start > Settings > System > About, under Windows specifications. If the edition does not match your license, reinstall or upgrade to the matching edition, or use a valid key for the installed edition.

Activate with an existing digital license
A digital license lets Windows activate without you typing a product key, but it is still a valid license. Connect the PC to the internet, then open Settings > System > Activation and use the troubleshooter if Windows is not activated. Follow its prompts to activate Windows with the license associated with the device.
If the device’s hardware changed recently, sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the license and use the Activation troubleshooter’s hardware-change option.
Activate with a valid product key
If you have a valid 25-character key for the installed edition, enter it at Settings > System > Activation > Change product key. The key must match the edition installed on the PC.

You can also install a genuine matching key from an elevated Command Prompt using cscript.exe %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /ipk YOUR-PRODUCT-KEY, replacing the placeholder with your key. Then attempt online activation with cscript.exe %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /ato. These commands do not make an invalid or unauthorized key legitimate.

Microsoft documents an offline activation workflow for a properly licensed Windows installation. It uses an Installation ID and a Confirmation ID; it does not generate a license or bypass the licensing requirement.
- Follow Microsoft’s offline activation instructions to obtain the Installation ID for the PC.
- Use the official activation process to receive a Confirmation ID for that Installation ID.
- Apply the Confirmation ID as directed in Microsoft’s instructions, then check activation in Settings > System > Activation.
CMD is part of this workflow, but the Installation ID and Confirmation ID do not replace a valid license.

What if you do not have a valid license?
If there is no valid product key or digital license for the installed edition, Microsoft’s documented consumer option is to select Go to Microsoft Store from the activation flow and follow the instructions to purchase a Windows digital license. Check that the license matches your installed edition.
For a work or school device managed by an organization, contact its IT administrator about volume activation. The organization may need to connect the device to its network or help resolve an activation issue.
What CMD can and cannot do
- CMD can help with Microsoft’s documented offline activation process when you have a valid license.
- CMD can install a valid product key and attempt activation.
- CMD cannot create a valid Windows license or turn an unauthorized key into a legitimate one.
- Activating without entering a key is possible when the device already has a valid digital license; it is not the same as activating without a license.
