To activate Windows 11 Pro with Command Prompt, open it as an administrator and run cscript.exe slmgr.vbs /ato if a valid Pro key is already installed. To install your own valid 25-character Pro key first, run cscript.exe slmgr.vbs /ipk YOUR-25-CHARACTER-PRODUCT-KEY, then run cscript.exe slmgr.vbs /ato. These commands request activation; they cannot create or replace a Windows license.
The right steps depend on whether you have a product key, a digital license, or organization-managed volume licensing. The installed Windows edition must match the license. See Microsoft’s slmgr.vbs command reference for command syntax.
Before you start
Check which of these applies to you:

A Windows 11 Pro license will not activate a Windows 11 Home installation until the device is upgraded to Pro. If you do not have a key or digital license, Microsoft’s supported purchase route is Settings > System > Activation > Go to Store. See Microsoft’s Activate Windows guidance.
Where to find a product key depends on how Windows was purchased: it may be associated with a preinstalled device, packaging, a retailer confirmation or digital locker, a Microsoft order confirmation, or a volume-license portal. See Microsoft’s guide to finding your Windows product key.

1. Open Command Prompt as administrator
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
Microsoft’s slmgr reference requires elevation for key installation with /ipk. Use an elevated prompt for the activation steps as well.
2. Confirm that Windows 11 Pro is installed
Run DISM /Online /Get-CurrentEdition in Command Prompt and check the reported edition. You can also run winver for a quick graphical check.
If the device is running Windows 11 Home, a Pro key does not by itself activate a Pro installation. Upgrade the device to Pro using a valid Pro entitlement, then activate it. Microsoft explains edition matching in its Windows activation guidance.
3. Install your Windows 11 Pro product key
Replace the placeholder with the valid key you own; do not use a key published or shared by someone else:

cscript.exe slmgr.vbs /ipk YOUR-25-CHARACTER-PRODUCT-KEY
The /ipk option installs a key that applies to the installed Windows edition. Installing a key is not the same as completing activation.
4. Request online activation
With an internet connection, run:
cscript.exe slmgr.vbs /ato
This asks Windows to activate using the installed key and licensing configuration. The result depends on the license type and whether the relevant activation service is available. Microsoft documents /ato in its slmgr.vbs command reference.

Microsoft notes that retail and MAK activation is perpetual, so /xpr is especially useful for checking whether a volume-activation client has an expiration. You can also open Settings > System > Activation to review the activation state.
Using a digital license instead of a product key
If the device has a Windows 11 Pro digital license, you may not need to install a key. Connect to the internet and check Settings > System > Activation. A digital license does not require entering a product key, but it must match the installed edition.
Linking the digital license to your Microsoft account can help the Activation troubleshooter after a significant hardware change. Open the Activation page and use the troubleshooter if Windows does not reactivate. Windows 11 Pro in an organization
Volume activation is for organizations with properly configured licensing and activation infrastructure. A generic volume license key does not provide a personal retail license. If your organization manages the device, ask its administrator whether it uses KMS, Active Directory-based activation, or MAK and what steps you should follow.

Do not point a personal PC at an unrelated public activation server or use a leaked or shared volume key. Microsoft’s documentation covers activating Windows clients and KMS activation.
When activation fails
- Open Settings > System > Activation and note the exact error code and displayed edition.
- Confirm that Windows is running Pro and that your key or digital license applies to that edition.
- If you have a valid key, connect to the internet and try cscript.exe slmgr.vbs /ato in an elevated Command Prompt.
- If you have a digital license, use the Activation page and troubleshooter rather than trying an unrelated product key.
- If the device had a major hardware change, sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the license and try the troubleshooter.
- If the issue remains, use Microsoft’s Windows activation error help or contact Microsoft Support.
For some supported offline activation cases, Microsoft describes Installation ID and Confirmation ID workflows through its Product Activation Portal or Microsoft Support. Do not assume phone activation is available for every edition; Microsoft notes that some editions require online activation. See Microsoft’s online or offline activation guidance.
What not to use as an activation fix
slmgr /rearm does not provide a Windows license or permanently activate Windows. Likewise, a successful /ipk command only installs a key; it does not prove activation succeeded. Request activation with /ato and check the result in Settings or with /dlv and /xpr.

Can I activate Windows 11 Pro with CMD without a product key?
Only if the device already has a valid Pro digital license or uses an authorized organization-managed volume-activation system. Command Prompt cannot generate a license or bypass activation.

Why does /ipk succeed but Windows remain unactivated?
Installing a key does not complete activation. The installed edition, license type, internet connection, or organization’s activation setup may be preventing activation. Check the error shown in Settings > System > Activation and follow Microsoft’s activation error guidance.
Will a Windows 11 Pro key activate Windows 11 Home?
No. The device must be upgraded to Pro using a valid Pro entitlement before the Pro license can activate the installed edition.
Is a volume activation key a free activation key?
No. Volume activation is for properly licensed organizations using their configured activation infrastructure. It is not a shortcut for activating a personal retail copy.
How do I reactivate Windows after a hardware change?
Connect to the internet, sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the digital license, and try the Activation troubleshooter in Settings > System > Activation. See Microsoft’s hardware-change reactivation guidance.
