On an installed Windows 11 PC, open Settings > System > Activation > Change product key, enter your 25-character Windows 11 Pro key, and follow the prompts. First confirm that Windows 11 Pro is installed and that the key or digital license covers Pro; a Pro license will not activate a Home installation as Pro until you upgrade the edition.
Before entering a key: check the edition and license
Open Settings > System > Activation. The page shows the installed Windows edition and activation state. Microsoft supports activation with either a digital license or a 25-character product key, and the installed edition must match the license. See Microsoft’s Windows activation guide.
A product key is a 25-character code. Where to find it depends on how Windows was obtained:
- New PC: Check the device packaging or Certificate of Authenticity (COA).
- Boxed copy: Check the label inside the box.
- Digital copy from an authorized retailer: Check the confirmation email or the retailer’s digital locker.
- Windows 11 Pro upgrade bought through Microsoft Store: The purchase provides a digital license, not a product key. Check the Microsoft account used for the purchase.

Activate an installed Windows 11 Pro edition with a key
- Open Settings > System > Activation and confirm the installed edition is Windows 11 Pro.
- Select Change product key.
- Enter the 25-character Pro key and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Return to Settings > System > Activation to check the activation state.
If activation fails, note the exact error code shown. Different codes point to different causes; use the relevant branch below rather than trying unrelated keys or tools. Microsoft’s Windows activation error guide provides code-specific advice.
Upgrade from Windows 11 Home to Pro
A Pro key cannot activate a Home installation as Pro until the edition is upgraded. Microsoft documents two routes: enter the Pro key in the Change Product Key window, or use the Microsoft Store upgrade route. See Microsoft’s Home-to-Pro upgrade instructions.

If you already have a Pro digital license but the PC is running Home, use the Activation troubleshooter and select Upgrade to Windows 11 Pro. If the license is for Home but Pro is installed, install the matching Home edition or obtain a Pro license; an edition mismatch cannot be resolved by re-entering the Home entitlement.
Troubleshoot activation by the error or situation

These code explanations and steps are from Microsoft’s activation error guidance. If no code appears or the suggested fix does not work, use the displayed activation state and contact the seller or organization that provided the license as appropriate.

After a motherboard or other major hardware change
A significant hardware change can affect the device match for a digital license. Confirm Windows is running the same edition licensed before the change. If the license was linked to a Microsoft account, run the Activation troubleshooter; if activation used a product key, have that key available. Microsoft states in its OEM license terms that successful activation does not confirm that software is genuine or properly licensed. Use a license from a legitimate source and avoid tools or methods that bypass activation; Microsoft’s Windows 11 license terms prohibit circumventing activation.
