To activate international roaming on an Airtel postpaid number, buy an international roaming (IR) pack in the Airtel app or on Airtel’s IR website; Airtel says the purchase enables IR automatically. You can also switch on IR without a pack, but then calls, texts and data are billed at destination-specific standard rates. IR service activation and buying a pack are separate choices.
How do I activate international roaming on my Airtel postpaid number?
- Open the Airtel app and find International Roaming. Airtel’s official terms direct customers to the app or its International Roaming website to subscribe to a pack. For eSIM users, Airtel gives this route: App → Manage → buy an International Roaming plan → choose a plan → complete payment. Airtel says buying a pack works the same way for eSIM and physical SIM customers. Airtel’s eSIM instructions describe the app route.
- Check the destination and choose a pack. Verify that your destination is covered, then compare pack validity and included data, calls and SMS with your trip and expected usage. Pack prices, coverage and allowances can change, so check the live details for your destination and travel dates in the app or on Airtel’s IR page.
- Complete the purchase. Airtel says a pack purchase automatically enables IR. You do not need to separately enable the service after buying the pack.
- Check usage while away. Airtel says data usage appears in the app in real time. Voice and SMS usage updates may be delayed by up to four hours.
Can I activate Airtel roaming without a pack?
Yes. Airtel postpaid customers can enable IR service without buying a pack through the Airtel app or by contacting support. That only turns on the service; it does not buy a pack. Usage is charged at standard rates for the destination and appears on the monthly bill. Check Airtel’s current destination coverage and standard-rate information before relying on pay-as-you-go roaming; exact rates vary by destination.
Airtel’s terms also describe a “Roam-without-Fear” safeguard for a postpaid customer with IR enabled and no pack who uses the service in a pack-covered country. Standard rates apply first; if the day’s charges exceed ₹698, Airtel says it automatically applies a ₹698 one-day pack. Airtel lists 1 GB of data, 100 minutes for incoming and outgoing calls (India and local), 10 outgoing SMS and unlimited incoming SMS until 11:59 p.m. local time. If included benefits run out, Airtel says data speed drops to 80 kbps and additional calls or SMS are charged at discounted rates. The daily charge is billed later, the pack cannot be bought by the customer directly, and Airtel says the threshold may be revised. This is not free roaming, so check current rates and terms before travel.
Will roaming turn on automatically when I buy a pack?
Yes. Airtel says buying an IR pack automatically enables IR service. In contrast, enabling the service without a pack leaves usage subject to standard destination-specific rates.

When does my Airtel roaming pack start?
Airtel allows postpaid customers to buy a pack up to 365 days before travel. The pack’s validity begins only after you connect to a covered country and make chargeable usage. Airtel calculates validity using the visited country’s local time. Pack validity is separate from your domestic bill cycle, and Airtel says the pack is billed in the month it activates. Postpaid pack auto-renewal is off by default.
Can I activate roaming from abroad?
If you cannot use the app, Airtel lists these support routes:

If you are already outside India and need roaming, confirm with Airtel that IR is active and check the applicable destination rates or pack before using data, calling or texting.

- Security-deposit plan: Airtel’s postpaid terms say IR service becomes available four months after the plan starts for plans activated with a security deposit.
- Family plan: IR benefits are not shared among family connections. Check and activate the individual traveler’s line.
- Company-paid line: Airtel directs customers on company-paid connections to their company coordinator for pack activation.

Compare the actual destination, trip length and expected use rather than choosing by price or duration alone. A pack may offer a more predictable allowance for a trip, while unbundled use exposes you to destination-specific standard rates. Airtel’s live page displayed these postpaid examples when checked on 2026-10-07; prices and benefits can change:

Use Airtel’s live app or IR page to confirm the current price, destination coverage, allowances and validity before buying. The right option depends on how long you will be away and how much data, calling and SMS you expect to use.
