To get Japanese-style text emoticons (often called kaomoji) on an iPhone, add the Japanese Kana keyboard in Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard. Then switch to it while typing and tap the ^_^ key to open its emoticon choices. The keyboard is built into iOS; “secret” just means the route is easy to miss.
Add the Japanese Kana keyboard
- Open Settings and go to General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
- Tap Add New Keyboard, choose Japanese, then select Kana if iOS offers input options.

Open and use the emoticon choices
- Open a message, note, or another app and tap a text field to show the keyboard.
- Touch and hold the Emoji or keyboard-switch key, then choose Japanese Kana. Apple documents this press-and-hold switching method in its keyboard instructions.
- Tap ^_^ to display the facemark or emoticon choices, then tap one to insert it.
The ^_^ route is described by a 2016 how-to. The exact key position and appearance may differ across iOS versions, so look for the ^_^ control rather than assuming it will be in a particular spot.
Text emoticons versus picture emoji
Japanese Kana emoticons are text-based faces, such as kaomoji. Apple’s separate Emoji keyboard is for picture-style emoji and also provides access to Memoji and stickers. To use it, switch to the Emoji keyboard and browse its categories; Apple explains the options in its Emoji keyboard guide.

Make a personal shortcut for a text emoticon
If you repeatedly use one particular emoticon, iOS text replacement can insert it from a shortcut you choose. This is a way to expand a saved text string, not a way to open the Kana keyboard’s list. Apple describes the feature in its text replacement guide.
