Google history is managed from more than one place. The main account-wide viewer is My Activity, where you can review and delete searches, visited websites, and YouTube activity saved to the signed-in account. Browser history, Maps Timeline, and content in Gmail, Drive, and Photos are handled separately.
This guide shows how to open My Activity, delete all matching activity, remove selected records, configure automatic deletion, and avoid the common situations where history appears to remain.
Open your Google history
- Go to myactivity.google.com.
- Sign in to the Google Account whose activity you want to review.
- Check the account avatar in the upper-right corner, especially if several Google Accounts are signed in.
My Activity centralizes supported account activity, including Google searches, websites visited, and YouTube videos watched. The page lets you search by keyword, filter by date, and filter by Google product.
Not every Google record appears there. For example, Chrome’s local browsing history, Maps Timeline, and files or messages stored in Google products have separate controls.

Delete all activity shown in My Activity
Use this option when you want to remove all activity covered by the My Activity deletion screen, rather than only a particular date or product.
- Open My Activity and sign in.
- Click Delete near the top of the page.
- Select All time.
- Click Next.
- Review the information shown, then click Delete.
Deletion first removes activity from view and from personalization, after which Google begins removing it from storage systems. Some limited information may still be retained for security, fraud prevention, financial record-keeping, legal or regulatory reasons, service operation, or direct communications. Anonymized information may also remain.
Delete activity for a date range or product
Deleting everything may be excessive if you only need to remove a particular period or service.
- In My Activity, use the Calendar control to choose a preset period or enter a start and end date.
- Use Search to select one or more Google products, or enter a keyword.
- To remove all results matching the filter, click Delete beside the search bar.
- Select Delete Results and complete the confirmation steps.
You can also open an individual activity entry and use its Delete control. This is the safer choice when you want to remove one search, website visit, or other record without affecting the rest of the selected period.

Delete Google Search history only
Google’s privacy controls are being updated gradually. Some accounts show a separate Search Services History category, while others still show search-history and recommendation controls under Web & App Activity.
Search Services History covers activity from services including Search, Maps, Shopping, Flights, Hotels, Translate, and News. To remove search history:
- Open Search history in My Activity.
- Click Delete.
- Choose the scope you need: Delete all time, Delete custom range, Delete all activity from [day], or Delete activity item.
- Confirm the deletion.
Deleted Google Search history cannot be recovered.
Delete YouTube watch history
- Open My Activity.
- Select YouTube History.
- Click Manage history.
- For one video, click the close or remove control beside it.
- For a larger deletion, click DELETE, choose the time period, and confirm.
There is an important side effect: using DELETE for YouTube watch history also deletes YouTube search history for the selected period. If you only want to remove one watched video, use the individual close control instead.
Turn off or pause activity collection
Deleting existing records and stopping future collection are different actions. Turning off a setting by itself does not erase activity already saved in My Activity.

Turn off Web & App Activity
- Open your Google Account.
- Go to Data & privacy.
- Under History settings, select Web & App Activity.
- Click Turn off.
- Choose either Turn off or Turn off and delete activity.
- If you choose the deletion option, follow the prompts to select what should be removed and confirm.
Web & App Activity can include options such as Include Chrome history and activity from sites, apps, and devices that use Google services and Include voice and audio activity. Review those options rather than assuming that disabling the main setting changes every related control.
Pause YouTube history
- Go to My Activity and open YouTube History.
- Click Controls.
- Select Turn off.
While YouTube history is off, watched videos are not added to watch history. The controls can separately cover YouTube videos, YouTube searches, and YouTube voice and audio activity.
Set automatic deletion
Automatic deletion is useful if you want activity retained for a limited period without having to remember to clear it manually. Google documents retention choices of 3 months, 18 months, or 36 months for applicable activity.
For Search history
- Open Search history in My Activity.
- Open Controls.
- Under Auto-delete, click the text showing whether it is Off or On.
- Select Auto-delete activity older than.
- Choose 3 months, 18 months, or 36 months.
- Click Next, then confirm.
For another activity category
- Open your Google Account and go to Data & privacy.
- Under History settings, select the relevant activity or history setting.
- Click Auto-delete.
- Choose the retention period, click Next, and select Confirm.
You can still delete activity manually when an automatic-deletion rule is enabled. The selected period is a maximum-retention setting, not a promise that every item will remain visible for that entire time. For example, Google says location information about the device and IP address is deleted from Web & App Activity after 30 days.

Why deleted history may still appear
- The wrong account is open: with multiple accounts signed in, activity can be saved to the default account. Check the avatar before deleting anything.
- A device is offline: Google says deleted items may remain visible on an offline device. They should disappear after it reconnects.
- You are looking at browser data: local Chrome history and other browser data use separate controls.
- The record belongs to another product: Maps Timeline and some product-specific records are not represented by the standard My Activity list.
- Deletion is still processing: removing an item from view starts a broader deletion process; it does not mean every copy in every storage system disappears instantly.
If an offline device still shows deleted activity after reconnecting, Google lists clearing cache and cookies as a troubleshooting step. Be aware that this can sign you out of websites and remove locally stored site data.

Google says searches and browsing performed in Incognito mode are not saved to the signed-in Google Account’s Search history. That does not make Incognito a universal deletion tool. Local device or browser records, and records held by a network, employer, school, or service provider, are outside My Activity’s controls.
Likewise, searches made in the Google app while signed out can be saved locally on the computer. Google provides a separate signed-out setting at Google homepage → Settings → Search settings → Search customization.
A practical cleanup sequence
- Confirm the correct account avatar at My Activity.
- Use the date and product filters first if you only need a targeted cleanup.
- Use Delete → All time → Next → Delete for a full My Activity cleanup.
- Open Other activity to find records managed elsewhere.
- Clear local browser history separately if that is part of your goal.
- Review Data & privacy → History settings and configure automatic deletion or turn off categories you do not want saved.
- Check YouTube History and Maps Timeline separately.
FAQ
Does turning off Web & App Activity delete existing Google history?
No. Turning the setting off stops or limits future saving, but existing My Activity records remain unless you choose Turn off and delete activity or delete them separately.

Does deleting My Activity delete Gmail, Drive, or Photos?
No. Documents, emails, photos, and other product content remain in their respective services until you delete them there. Deleting an activity record also does not delete messages or content sent through Google services.
Does deleting YouTube watch history delete YouTube searches?
Bulk deletion does. Google states that using DELETE for YouTube watch history also removes YouTube search history for the selected time period. Use the individual close control when removing only one watched video.
Is Google Maps Timeline included in My Activity?
Maps Timeline is managed separately. Current Google documentation says Timeline location data is saved to the device, with an optional encrypted backup to Google’s servers.
Can I recover deleted Google Search history?
No. Google states that deleted Search history cannot be recovered.

Google’s documented process uses the website or app controls, such as Delete, All time, and confirmation prompts. There is no command-line command required by the official procedure.
The Bottom Line
Use myactivity.google.com to inspect and delete supported account activity. For a complete My Activity cleanup, choose Delete → All time → Next → Delete. Then handle browser history, Maps Timeline, YouTube controls, and files or messages separately, because clearing My Activity does not remove every record Google or your devices may hold.
