The correct Outlook web address depends on your account: use Outlook.com for a personal Microsoft account, Outlook on the web for a work or school Microsoft 365 account, or your organization’s URL for a self-hosted Exchange mailbox. For most work or school accounts, go to outlook.office.com or outlook.office365.com; for a personal account, go to outlook.live.com.
Using the wrong service can leave you signed in to Microsoft but looking at the wrong mailbox. Use the instructions below for your account type.

Microsoft uses Outlook.com for personal email and Outlook on the web for work and school mailboxes. “Outlook Web App” and “Outlook Web Access” are older names that still appear in some Exchange documentation. See Microsoft’s explanation of Outlook versions.
Access Outlook on the web with a work or school account
Method 1: Open Outlook directly
- Open a supported web browser.
- Go to https://outlook.office.com or https://outlook.office365.com.
- Enter your complete work or school email address and select Next.
- Enter your password and select Sign in.
- Complete any two-factor authentication or other security verification required by your organization.
After authentication, Outlook opens your organization’s Exchange Online mailbox if one is available and Outlook on the web access is enabled. Your company may use a different sign-in policy, such as a security key, authenticator app, smart card, or a redirect to its own identity provider. Method 2: Open Outlook through Microsoft 365
- Go to https://www.microsoft365.com.
- Select Sign in.
- Enter your work or school email address and password.
- Complete the requested security verification.
- Open the App Launcher, usually the nine-dot icon in the upper-left corner.
- Select Outlook.
Microsoft has been transitioning the Microsoft 365 app branding to Microsoft 365 Copilot. You may be redirected to m365.cloud.microsoft; this affects the Microsoft 365 portal, not the Outlook mailbox service. Microsoft says office.com and microsoft365.com redirect as part of this transition. See Microsoft’s transition information.
Access a personal Outlook.com mailbox
Use this route for personal Microsoft accounts, including addresses ending in @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, or @msn.com.
- Go to https://outlook.live.com.
- Select Sign in if the sign-in screen is not already displayed.
- Enter your personal Microsoft account email address, username, or alias and select Next.
- Enter your password and select Sign in.
- Complete any identity verification Microsoft requests.
A personal Microsoft account is separate from a work or school Microsoft 365 account. For example, signing in with a personal Hotmail address will not open your employer’s Microsoft 365 mailbox. See Microsoft’s Outlook.com sign-in instructions.
Access a self-hosted Exchange mailbox
Some organizations run Exchange Server themselves instead of using Exchange Online. There is no universal Microsoft address for these mailboxes. Ask your IT department for the correct web address, commonly in this format:
https://<domain-name>/owa
For example: https://mail.contoso.com/owa
Enter the address in your browser, then provide the credentials requested by your organization. External access must be configured by the organization, and Outlook on the web must be enabled for your mailbox. See Microsoft’s Exchange Server web access guidance.

Do not substitute outlook.office.com for your organization’s custom address. That opens Microsoft’s Exchange Online service and may not connect to an on-premises mailbox.
How to identify the Outlook version you opened
Check the address in your browser’s address bar after signing in:
- outlook.live.com means you are using personal Outlook.com.
- outlook.office.com or outlook.office365.com normally means Outlook on the web for a work or school account.
- Your organization’s domain followed by /owa normally indicates self-hosted Exchange Server.
The Outlook interface can look similar across these services, so the URL is a more reliable way to tell them apart.

Sign out of Outlook on the web
- Select the Account manager in the Outlook header. This is usually your profile photo, initials, or an account icon.
- Select Sign out.
On a shared or public computer, close the browser after signing out. On the next Microsoft 365 sign-in, clear Keep me signed in if you do not want the browser to reuse the session automatically.
If the profile picture or initials are missing, an ad-blocking extension may be interfering with the page. Microsoft identifies ad-blocking as one possible cause of missing account controls or loading problems.

Browser requirements
Use the latest available version of one of these browsers:
- Microsoft Edge
- Google Chrome
- Mozilla Firefox
- Apple Safari on macOS; Microsoft lists Safari 16 or later
Outlook.com and Outlook on the web also work on Linux with current Chrome or Firefox, although Microsoft warns that some features may not be available. See Microsoft’s supported-browser guidance.
Internet Explorer, Edge Legacy, Chrome 79 or earlier, Safari 13.1 or earlier, Firefox 78 or earlier, and Opera 76 or earlier may display an error page asking you to upgrade. If Outlook works in a private or incognito window but not in a normal window, disable extensions or clear the site data for the Outlook and Microsoft sign-in pages.
Fix common Outlook web access problems
You signed in but cannot see your work mailbox
You may have authenticated with a personal Microsoft account or another work account already stored in the browser. Sign out, return to the correct Outlook address, and sign in with the organization email address. If offered, select Sign in with a different account.
The browser keeps opening the wrong account
Microsoft 365 can reuse an existing browser session. Sign out of the unwanted account and sign in again. You can also use a separate browser profile for personal and work accounts. Clear Keep me signed in at the next sign-in if the computer should not retain the session.

Your password is rejected
For a work or school account, self-service password reset works only when the organization’s administrator has enabled it. If no reset option is available, contact your organization’s help desk or administrator.

You receive “403 Sorry! Access denied”
A 403 error can be an administrator-side Exchange Online configuration problem. Microsoft documents one cause as the MyBaseOptions role being absent from the default role-assignment policy. End users generally cannot correct this in the browser; send the exact error and time of the failure to your Microsoft 365 administrator. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting article.
Outlook on the web has been disabled
An Exchange administrator can disable web access for an individual mailbox. In Exchange Server, an administrator can check the setting in the Exchange admin center (EAC) under Recipients, Mailboxes, the selected mailbox, Edit, Mailbox features, Email Connectivity, and Outlook on the web. The administrator can select Enable or Disable, then select Save.
In Exchange Management Shell, the setting is controlled with Set-CasMailbox -Identity <MailboxIdentity> -OWAEnabled $true to enable access or Set-CasMailbox -Identity <MailboxIdentity> -OWAEnabled $false to disable it. To inspect the mailbox settings, use Get-CasMailbox -Identity <MailboxIdentity>. These are administrator actions; see Microsoft’s mailbox access guidance.

The Exchange Online license was removed or expired
A regular Exchange Online user mailbox can be disconnected when its Exchange Online license is removed or expires. Microsoft states that the license must be reassigned within 30 days to reconnect the mailbox; after that period, the mailbox may be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. Contact the organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator rather than creating a new mailbox. Source: Microsoft’s Exchange Online licensing guidance.
The self-hosted Exchange URL shows a certificate warning
A certificate warning on a custom /owa address can indicate a problem with the site certificate or its trust configuration. Verify the address with IT before entering your password. Do not treat a browser warning as harmless simply because the page resembles Outlook; the organization controls the certificate for a self-hosted Exchange site.

What is the correct Outlook web address for Microsoft 365?

Yes. Outlook on the web and Outlook.com run in a supported browser, so the desktop Outlook application is not required.
Why does Outlook keep signing me into the wrong account?
The browser may already have an active Microsoft account session. Sign out, choose Sign in with a different account, or use a separate browser profile. Clearing Keep me signed in can reduce automatic reuse of the session.
How do I access an on-premises Exchange mailbox online?
Ask your organization’s IT department for its exact Outlook web address. It commonly follows the format https://mail.example.com/owa, but each organization controls its own URL and external access settings.
The Bottom Line
Use outlook.live.com for a personal Microsoft account, outlook.office.com or outlook.office365.com for a work or school Microsoft 365 account, and your organization’s custom /owa address for self-hosted Exchange. If the address is correct but access still fails, check the signed-in account, browser extensions, mailbox licensing, and whether an administrator has disabled Outlook on the web.
