You can use Google Gemini on an iPhone now through the Gemini app, the Google app, or a web browser. What is changing is Apple’s separate Siri experience: Apple says its next-generation Foundation Models will use Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology, with Siri AI beginning a beta rollout in Apple’s 2027 software releases. Gemini is not being folded into iOS, and Google is not taking over Siri.
How to use Gemini on an iPhone
Google offers three ways to reach Gemini on iOS: its dedicated Gemini app, the Google app, and a web browser. The Gemini app supports typed and spoken prompts, Gemini Live conversations, image creation, and connections to Google services such as YouTube, Maps, Gmail, and Calendar. Google’s announcement of the iPhone app describes these access routes: Google’s Gemini mobile app announcement.
Get started in the Gemini app
-
Check that your iPhone runs iOS 16 or later. Google lists that as the minimum for the Gemini app; availability can also depend on country, language, and gradual rollout. See Google’s Gemini mobile app availability page.
-
Install or open the Gemini app, if it is available in your region.

Some features work without signing in. Other features and saved activity require a Google Account with Gemini access; work or school accounts may need the appropriate access or license. Gemini’s use of location on iPhone follows the location permissions selected for the Google app. To review them, open iPhone Settings and check the Google app’s location access; if precise location is enabled, Gemini and other Google app services may use it. Google explains these account and permission details in its Gemini mobile app help.

What is changing between Gemini and Siri
On January 12, 2026, Apple and Google announced a multiyear collaboration. Apple said its next-generation Foundation Models would be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology, helping power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri. Apple also said Apple Intelligence would continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute. The announcement describes a technology collaboration—not a replacement of Siri by the Gemini app. Read the joint Apple and Google statement.
Apple’s September 14, 2026 update says Siri AI is beginning a beta rollout in Apple’s 2027 software releases. It is an Apple Intelligence experience built on Apple Foundation Models developed in collaboration with Google and Gemini; it is distinct from Google’s Gemini app and service. Apple lists supported Apple Intelligence hardware and a supported language as requirements, and says Siri AI will initially be unavailable in the EU and China. Some server-side Apple Intelligence features have daily usage limits, with expanded access available for a fee in the future. Check Apple’s current availability information for rollout details, which can change.

Google’s separate transition from Google Assistant to Gemini is another change, but it does not mean Siri is becoming Google Assistant or Gemini. In March 2025, Google said it was upgrading more mobile users from Assistant to Gemini and that classic Assistant would later stop being accessible on most mobile devices, except on devices that do not meet Gemini’s minimum system requirements. Those dated availability figures—over 40 languages and more than 200 countries—refer to the Gemini app in Google’s March 2025 announcement, not to Apple’s collaboration or Siri’s rollout.
