Open the emoji keyboard

Tap a text-entry field in an app, such as a message or document, to show the iPhone keyboard.

Tap the Emoji button. If you do not see it, tap the Next Keyboard key instead; its appearance depends on the keyboards enabled on your iPhone.

Browse by swiping through the emoji, or tap a category symbol below the keyboard to jump to that section. Tap an emoji to insert it.

Tap ABC when you want to return to ordinary letter entry.
Apple documents emoji entry in text fields such as messages and documents. Button names and Settings labels may vary with iOS version and language. Apple’s iPhone User Guide explains how to use the emoji keyboard.
If the emoji keyboard is missing
Add it from Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard > Emoji. Then return to a text field and open it with the Emoji button or Next Keyboard key.

Find a particular emoji
Browse categories and recent emoji
Use the category symbols beneath the keyboard to move directly to a group, or swipe to browse. The recent-items area can help you reuse emoji you have used recently.
Search and predictive suggestions
Apple’s support article describes searching for emoji by name and using predictive emoji suggestions. In Messages, after opening the emoji keyboard, a word in your text may be offered for replacement with an emoji.

Choose a skin-tone variation
For emoji that support variations, touch and hold the emoji, drag to the skin tone you want, then release.

Where supported, tap the Dictate button and say the emoji’s name—for example, “heart emoji.” Dictation and emoji commands vary by language and region. See Apple’s iPhone guide to dictating text.
