A partnership-led channel model replaces one-off, resource-led delivery with ongoing collaboration tied to a client’s business goals. Jake Rickhuss, managing director and co-founder of London-based technology consultancy Journi, argues that this approach can help MSPs, VARs and systems integrators move beyond supplying project capacity to sharing responsibility for outcomes. His view is informed by his firm’s approach, not by independently validated performance data.

What a partnership-led channel model looks like

In a transactional project, a provider supplies a scoped team, completes agreed work and hands it over. Rickhuss describes a different relationship: the provider stays involved, works with the client’s people and keeps delivery aligned with business strategy. The emphasis shifts from meeting contract outputs alone to collaborating on the outcomes those outputs are meant to support.

Rickhuss’s example of this model combines several practices:

  • Smaller, senior-led teams: His firm’s example uses people with at least five years’ experience. That is a feature of his approach, not a general industry standard.
  • Shared outcome ownership: Provider and client work toward agreed business results instead of treating delivery of contracted items as the only measure of success.
  • Regular communication: The approach includes frequent contact, such as daily standups, to keep decisions and delivery connected.
  • Technology selected for business fit: Tools and platforms should suit the client’s needs and workflows rather than being chosen in isolation from how the organization operates.
  • Client teams as equal participants: Internal staff are involved in the work, rather than treated simply as recipients of a handoff.

“Clients increasingly want a different approach: a trusted partner who stays aligned with their goals and delivers outcomes consistently,” Rickhuss writes in IT Pro. That is his assessment of client demand, not a finding backed in the article by survey results or client testimony.

Why channel firms may consider the shift

Rickhuss’s case for partnership-led delivery starts with the expanding reach of technology across business operations. Some organizations, he argues, do not have enough senior engineering or product capability in-house to plan and deliver complex work on their own. He singles out mid-market and enterprise organizations with 50–1,000 employees as a relevant audience; that is his framing, not a validated market boundary.

He also criticizes delivery arrangements that can make it harder to maintain momentum: rigid resourcing, junior-heavy teams requiring close supervision, incentives to add headcount rather than value, slow mobilization, inconsistent delivery, and documentation or approval overhead. The proposed alternative is closer coordination, direct access to experienced expertise and clearer shared responsibility for outcomes.

For channel businesses, the strategic possibility is a change in what clients value: not only access to people or a completed implementation, but continuity, judgment and an understanding of how technology work supports business priorities. Rickhuss says this could help providers differentiate, retain clients, reduce oversight costs, earn referrals and generate repeat revenue. His article does not quantify those effects or establish that the delivery model caused them.

Where the model may fit best

Partnership-led delivery is most relevant, in Rickhuss’s view, when work is complex enough to require sustained coordination between technical delivery and business decisions. He names these settings:

How transactional and partnership-led delivery differ

Dimension Transactional, project-led delivery Partnership-led delivery
Client involvement Often concentrated around scoping, approvals and handoff. Continues through regular collaboration during delivery.
Team shape Resources are assigned to the scoped project; the source does not prescribe a typical seniority mix. Rickhuss’s example uses smaller, senior-led teams, with people who have at least five years’ experience.
Definition of success Completion of contracted outputs is central. Provider and client share attention to outcomes as well as agreed work.
Decisions and mobilization The source criticizes slow mobilization and approval overhead in some resource-led arrangements; it gives no comparative timing data. Frequent communication is intended to support closer coordination; no measured speed improvement is reported.
Client oversight The source identifies supervision and documentation burden as possible problems in some arrangements; it does not quantify them. Direct expertise and shared work are intended to reduce friction, but no measured cost comparison is provided.
Technology choices Fit with business workflows is not assured by the transactional structure itself. Technology is selected with the client’s business and workflows in view.
Work after implementation The engagement may end at project handoff. Support, modernization and monitoring can continue as services where the client has an ongoing need.

The comparison describes the models as Rickhuss frames them, not measured results or a claim that every project-based engagement has these limitations.

What to consider before changing the delivery model

Moving toward partnership is not just a matter of changing a contract label. It changes how a provider staffs work, communicates, makes decisions and defines success. A channel firm considering the shift should work through the practical implications with the client:

  • Agree the business objective: Connect delivery to a specific client priority, rather than assuming that a technical milestone alone captures the desired outcome.
  • Define shared accountability: Clarify which outcomes the provider and client can influence, what each party is responsible for and how progress will be reviewed.
  • Establish a working cadence: Decide who participates, how often teams meet and how decisions or blockers are handled. Daily standups are one example in Rickhuss’s approach, not a mandatory cadence for every engagement.
  • Bring the right expertise: Senior-led teams may offer more direct judgment, but firms must ensure they can provide that expertise consistently without making the service uneconomic.
  • Involve client staff meaningfully: Set expectations for the time and participation required from internal teams; partnership does not remove the client’s role in decisions or delivery.
  • Plan beyond launch where appropriate: Identify whether support, modernization or monitoring is genuinely useful after implementation, rather than treating ongoing work as an automatic extension.

There is a commercial trade-off: continuity and shared responsibility can deepen a relationship, but they also require sustained senior attention and clear boundaries. Providers should be explicit about scope, decision rights, dependencies and how changes to priorities will be handled. The cited article advocates the model but does not provide a standard contract, pricing approach or implementation framework.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

Rickhuss’s article offers an industry perspective on why channel firms might adopt partnership-led delivery and how his firm approaches it. It does not include independent case studies, before-and-after comparisons, client testimony or quantified evidence showing that the model improves retention, delivery speed, oversight costs or revenue. Those benefits should therefore be treated as proposed advantages, not established outcomes.

Rickhuss sums up the intended change this way: “The channel has always been about solving problems. But today, it’s not just about solving them faster; it’s about solving them together.” For MSPs, VARs and systems integrators, the useful question is whether a particular client’s goals and delivery needs justify that more continuous, collaborative relationship.
