Orlando’s previous offense created guard opportunities most clearly in transition: after a stop, quick ball movement could force defenders to turn and match up before they were set. In the half court, Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner carried much of the creation burden, giving guards chances to contribute around those on-ball creators. But Sean Sweeney is Orlando’s head coach for 2026–27, and the specific actions he will use to free guards have not been established publicly. The distinction matters: the earlier approach is documented; a detailed account of Sweeney’s offense is not.

What is known about Orlando’s current offense?

Sean Sweeney replaced Jamahl Mosley after the 2025–26 season and is beginning his first NBA head-coaching job. NBA.com’s 2026–27 preview reports that Sweeney previously worked as an offensive coordinator in Dallas and most recently as an associate coach in San Antonio. That background is relevant context, but it does not establish that Orlando will run Dallas-style actions or any particular system.

The current roster gives the offense several potential creators and spacers. The Magic’s team page lists Banchero and Wagner alongside guards Jalen Suggs and Desmond Bane; Anthony Black is also listed among the guards. NBA.com’s preview expects Black to lead the bench unit, but that is a preseason expectation, not a guaranteed rotation role. Public analysis of the earlier offense treated Banchero and Wagner as central on-ball creators.

So the sound answer to “How do the Magic get their guards open shots?” has two parts: the prior team had a documented transition emphasis and a half-court creation context centered on Banchero and Wagner; the exact ways Sweeney will organize those pieces remain to be seen.

How did transition create guard chances under Mosley?

In a November 2025 article, the Magic described the previous team’s effort to push the ball forward after stops and attack before the opposing defense was organized. Then-head coach Jamahl Mosley explained the idea this way: “The ball moves faster than bodies and in transition, it makes it really hard to guard when the ball is flying and you have to turn heads really quickly.”

That principle can create opportunities for guards without requiring a set play. A quick advance after a stop can catch defenders retreating or sorting out assignments; rapid passing can make them turn and shift before they establish their matchups. Guards may then find a lane, receive the ball in space or benefit when a defender’s attention is drawn elsewhere. The official account documents the transition emphasis and Mosley’s explanation, not a specific frequency of guard shots or a guarantee that the same approach will continue under Sweeney.

What did the previous half-court offense offer guards?

NBA.com’s film analysis around Bane’s arrival discussed the creation load on Banchero and Wagner, their pick-and-roll decisions, off-catch opportunities and the potential value of more movement. That is an analyst’s description of the earlier roster’s needs and possible opportunities—not an official playbook or proof that a particular guard action was a staple.

The practical distinction is between creating a shot and finishing a possession. A forward who initiates an action can draw the defense’s attention; a guard positioned to receive a pass or move off the ball may have a chance to shoot or attack a closeout. Screens, cuts and relocations can serve that broader purpose, but the available public accounts do not verify which of those actions Orlando used most often, or how Sweeney will deploy them.

Nor should the 2021 account of Mosley’s introductory principles be treated as a guide to the current offense. It describes a former coaching regime, five years before Sweeney took over.

How do shooting and availability affect the options?

NBA.com’s 2026–27 season preview reports that Banchero averaged 22.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game in 2025–26, shooting 45.9% from the field and 30.5% from three. The same preview reports that Bane shot 40.4% from three over the five seasons preceding that preview. These are context figures with different time spans, not a complete tactical diagnosis or evidence of how Sweeney will use either player.

The preview also says injuries limited Wagner and Suggs in 2025–26 and identifies maximizing Banchero and Wagner as a challenge for Sweeney. Availability can change which creators and guards share the floor, and therefore which combinations are possible. The statistics and injury context help explain why creation, spacing and health matter; they do not reveal the coach’s solutions.

What should viewers look for in Sweeney’s version?

Until Orlando’s current-season actions are documented, a useful way to assess the offense is to track observable possessions rather than assume a playbook from Sweeney’s résumé. Compare games or samples using the same questions:

Any claim about a dominant action or a change from Mosley’s offense should identify its evidence—such as game film, a defined play-by-play sample or a direct explanation from a coach or player. Without that evidence, calling a pattern a settled feature of Sweeney’s system goes beyond what is publicly established.
