Each reported kit paired an adapted iPhone 12 with a battery pack, tripod and multi-network IoT SIM; cellular video feeds were sent to a virtual screen in the BBC TV studio and made available through iPlayer and BBC constituency pages. The SIM was intended to provide access to available mobile networks, not guarantee an uninterrupted connection.
How did the BBC stream election counts live?
BBC News deployed Cellhire Count Cam packages at vote-counting venues during election night and the following morning. Computer Weekly reported on 12 July 2024 that the deployment covered 369 locations. Its account describes an adapted Apple iPhone 12, integrated battery pack and tripod in each reported kit, alongside a multi-network IoT SIM for cellular data. The articles do not identify the tripod brand or SIM model. Computer Weekly’s report and Cellhire’s release from the same date describe the deployment.
The video travelled over mobile data to the BBC’s production setup. Feeds appeared on a virtual screen in the TV studio, while individual streams were accessible through iPlayer and BBC online constituency pages. The approach gave viewers a way to see live footage from local counts without relying solely on a traditional outside-broadcast setup at every venue.
Why use a multi-network SIM?
A multi-network IoT SIM can provide access to more than one mobile network, rather than limiting a device to one network. In this deployment, the SIM was described as connecting to the best available UK mobile network at a location. That can help a field device use whichever supported network is more suitable where it is operating, but it does not make mobile coverage uniform or guarantee a working connection: signal, congestion, venue conditions and network availability still matter.

BBC News assistant editor Geraint Thomas, who led the project, said the ambition to livestream from every county was challenging with traditional broadcasting methods. He also described connectivity as central to the project and the multi-network SIMs as an efficient solution. These are comments about the BBC deployment, not a general performance guarantee for multi-network SIMs.
How many UK vote counts did the BBC stream in 2024?
The reported total depends on the source and publication date. Computer Weekly and Cellhire’s 12 July 2024 materials give 369 locations. A later Cellhire article, published 8 August 2025, says 390 locations, without explaining the difference. The figures should not be combined or treated as a settled count.

| Cellhire press release | 12 July 2024 | 369 |

The discrepancy is unresolved in those publications. The two contemporaneous 2024 sources agree on 369; the later figure is Cellhire’s subsequent account and should be attributed to it.

The deployment illustrates one way to combine a small, preconfigured camera kit with cellular connectivity for live field video. It does not establish a measured uptime percentage, an independently audited location total, a cost saving or comparative network performance. Cellhire’s later account says there was no downtime, but that is a supplier claim rather than an independently verified service measurement.

The distinction matters because a SIM’s ability to access multiple networks is only one part of a live-streaming system. The phone and camera setup, power, local radio conditions, network capacity, data path and production workflow all contribute. Multi-network access can improve the available connectivity choices; it cannot ensure that every venue will have sufficient coverage or that a stream will never drop.
BBC streaming editor Jonny McGuigan described the result as personalised live election coverage, saying viewers could see democracy in action across the UK. Cellhire CEO Tony Guerion’s statement that the company played a key role in bringing the election to millions of people is the supplier’s perspective; the cited accounts do not provide an independently measured audience total.
