The Teenage Engineering OB–4 makes a case for a speaker that is operated as much by hand as by voice—though it is not documented as a voice-assistant device. It combines Bluetooth playback with FM radio, a line input, motorized controls, and tools for rewinding and looping audio. That makes it a useful example of a different design direction, not proof that the company has changed the speaker market as a whole.
What makes the Teenage Engineering OB–4 different?
Many people use “smart speaker” to mean a speaker built around a voice assistant and smart-home control. Texas Instruments’ January 2019 overview describes voice recognition and smart-home connectivity alongside audio playback as parts of the conventional design brief. Teenage Engineering presents the OB–4 differently: as a portable Bluetooth loudspeaker with radio, wired input, and hands-on playback features. Its product documentation does not establish voice recognition or smart-home hub functions.
The difference is less about adding another wireless source and more about making playback tangible. A motorized volume knob and tape-style dial invite the listener to interact directly with sound. The speaker also keeps a rolling recording of what is playing, so audio can be rewound, time-bent, and looped.
What can the OB–4 do besides play Bluetooth audio?
Radio and wired playback
Teenage Engineering lists Bluetooth Classic, Bluetooth Low Energy, FM radio, and a 3.5 mm stereo input. Its handle also houses an antenna. These options let the speaker work with radio and a wired source as well as a Bluetooth device.

- high quality audio – listen to crystal clear sound through two 4'' bass drivers and a pair of neodymium tweeters, a flow-optimised bass reflex duct delivers deep natural bass. all together you get 38 watts per channel — that's around 100 decibels of incredible sounding stereo that fills the entire room.
- versatile connectivity – in addition to fm radio and line-in (aux), OB–4 supports both high-definition wireless bluetooth and bluetooth low energy (ble). it also works with ortho remote for wireless volume control or use the orthoplay app, available on both iOS and android. compatible with all of your favorite music streaming services, including spotify and apple music.
- 72 hours of battery life – a long lasting battery gives you 72 hours of normal radio listening for a week without charging. the high capacity lipo battery delivers about 8 hours of noise at max volume, or an average of 40 hours on a single charge.
- magic user experience – OB–4 memorizes everything you play on an endless looping tape. rewind the radio and remix anything. use your fingers to grab, spin and interact with the sound with the digital-motion controlled volume knob and tape reel. disk mode is where new and experimental features are stored for OB–4. for now, there are three functions on the disk; ambient, karma and metronome.
- ultimate portability – the handle makes it easy to carry OB–4 anywhere, and can even be used as a stand. place the included smart spiral antenna antenna in the handle when you need an extra fm boost. if that's not enough, you can find custom fit OB–4 carry bags and carry straps available in a variety of colors.
Rewind, time-bend, and loop
The maker says the OB–4 memorizes a rolling two-hour recording of what is playing. This lets listeners rewind radio or other audio and create loops, rather than treating playback as a stream that can only be paused or skipped.
Disk modes
Disk mode includes ambient sound, karma, metronome, noise, and loop functions. Teenage Engineering describes karma as a “mantra box” and disk mode as a space for exploring and prototyping new functions. These modes extend the speaker’s use beyond conventional source playback.

How do the physical controls shape the experience?
The OB–4’s volume knob and tape dial are motorized. Teenage Engineering’s technical description names a brushless motor, Hall-effect sensor, and control algorithm behind the motion. The design turns controls into moving parts rather than static buttons or a touchscreen interface.
The handle serves several purposes: it supports the portable form, can act as a stand, and houses the antenna. This is a compact example of the product’s approach—combining practical functions with a distinctive physical interface.

What does the OB–4 say about Teenage Engineering’s design approach?
Founder Jesper Kouthoofd described his industrial-design method in an SFMOMA interview: “I always work with simple geometric shapes, RAL colors — which is a 40-color scale — and try to adhere to German industrial standards.” The OB–4’s restrained form and tactile controls fit that stated preference, while its motion and playback modes give the product a more instrument-like character.
The company’s development story also links the speaker’s motorized wheel to work on another product. In a 2024 interview about TP–7 development, Tomas, the electrical engineer responsible for TP–7 electronics and software, said the team began work on TP–7 before deciding to motorize OB–4. He attributed the OB–4 wheel’s function to the motor work done for TP–7. This is an example of development crossing product boundaries, rather than evidence of a quantified improvement in repairability or performance.

How does the OB–4 fit into the company’s speaker history?
Teenage Engineering’s 2018 announcement says its OD–11 speaker launched exclusively at MoMA NYC in 2014. The same release describes a holocellulose OD–11 developed with RISE as a research project, explicitly noting that the prototype was not intended for manufacturing and was not for sale. The announcement provides historical context, but no sales, adoption, or market-impact figures that would show the company reshaped the speaker category.
Is the OB–4 a smart speaker?
That depends on how broadly the term is used. In the general sense of a connected speaker with multiple functions, the OB–4 qualifies: it supports Bluetooth and includes FM radio, line input, and software-based playback modes. In the familiar voice-assistant sense, the available product documentation does not show voice recognition, a voice assistant, or smart-home hub functions. Calling it a smart speaker without that distinction can give readers the wrong expectation.
It is more precise to describe the OB–4 as a portable Bluetooth loudspeaker and interactive media instrument. The “reshapes” idea is best understood as a design argument: the product puts tactile control, radio, and playback manipulation at the center of the speaker experience. The available sources do not demonstrate market-wide impact or establish how it compares with other speakers in measured audio performance.
