A 2026 study reports an unusual result in a specific silver-particle and silicone-rubber nanocomposite: stretching it increases its thermal conductivity, rather than reducing it. The researchers attribute the effect to engineered nanoscale barriers between particles. Sungkyunkwan University also says electrical conductivity rises with stretching, but the available release does not provide numerical electrical-conductivity data.
What material did the researchers study?
The study, “Ballistic-Like Thermal Transport Between Fillers in Highly Conductive Stretchable Nanocomposites,” describes silver nanosatellite particles generated in situ within stretchable silicone rubber. Its version of record appeared online in Advanced Functional Materials on August 24, 2026. The journal abstract reports particles measuring 3.4 nm and an initial barrier width of 4.1 nm. This is a particular engineered formulation, not evidence that stretching ordinary rubber or composites generally improves conductivity.
Why can stretching increase thermal conductivity?
Heat in the material is carried in part by phonons—vibrations that move through a solid. In this composite, silver particles are separated by nanoscale regions of silicone that act as energy barriers to heat transfer. The authors report that stretching lengthens the channel or barrier between fillers, and that thermal conductivity rises as this width increases in the studied configuration.

The paper reports a phonon mean free path of 9.3 nm, longer than the cited 4.1 nm barrier width. It describes transport across the short barrier as “ballistic-like,” while also noting that scattering occurs in the bulk composite. That wording does not mean heat travels without scattering throughout the entire material.
The abstract describes different transport regimes for this system: diffusive transport at barrier widths of at least 1.3 µm regardless of barrier height, and a tunneling-dominated regime below 5 nm when barrier height is non-negligible. These are study-specific descriptions, not universal thresholds for other materials.

What conductivity results did the study report?
The journal abstract gives a thermal conductivity of 21.94 W m−1 K−1 for the described composite. It also reports that thermal conductivity increases with stretching while thermal conductance remains invariant with strain. Conductivity and conductance are related but distinct: conductivity describes a material property, while conductance also depends on the dimensions and geometry of the path through which heat flows.
Sungkyunkwan University’s September 1, 2026, announcement says electrical conductivity also rises as the material is stretched. The available journal abstract excerpt and university release do not provide numerical electrical-conductivity values or the full conditions for that result, so the electrical claim should be treated as an attributed report rather than a quantified comparison. What might the material be used for?
The university announcement points to heat management in flexible electronics, including foldable phones, as a possible application. It also says simulations showed polymer chains aligning with the direction of strain, which the researchers describe as enabling more efficient heat transfer. Tuning particle spacing and rubber chemistry is presented as a possible route to thermal switching.
These are research directions, not proof of a retail-ready material or a demonstrated improvement in a commercial phone. The available sources do not quantify device-level performance or establish commercial availability. Professor Seunghyun Baik described the work as uncovering a stretching-induced increase in thermal conductivity through control of nanoscale energy barriers and said it demonstrated an application to flexible-electronics heat management; that statement is the researcher’s characterization of the work. What remains unknown from the available reports?
The abstract and institutional announcement establish the central material description and selected thermal-transport figures, but do not give enough information to judge performance across practical operating conditions. They do not provide a complete strain series, numerical electrical-conductivity results and test conditions, cyclic durability, or a fully quantified device demonstration. Those details matter when comparing this research material with other candidates for flexible electronics.
