Players request access on that page; developers can admit requesters in batches, turn on automatic open signup, or distribute Playtest keys. Participation is separate from the commercial game’s reviews and wishlists, and a public Playtest does not promise confidentiality.
How players join a Steam Playtest
- Open the game’s main Steam store page. Playtest signup appears there; the Playtest does not have a separate public store page.
- Select the option to request access. This records your interest, but does not guarantee immediate admission if signup is limited.
- Wait for the developer to grant access. In limited-signup mode, Steam says players are selected at random from those who requested access. Developers can also choose countries when regional access or server latency matters.
- When you are admitted, Steam sends an email. You can also check your status on the main game’s store page.
If the developer uses open signup, requesting access automatically adds you to the Playtest. Steam says that when a developer switches from limited to open signup, pending requests generally begin to be accepted within a few minutes. See Steam’s Playtest documentation for the current details.
How developers set up and manage a Playtest
A Playtest is a separate child app ID associated with the main game. Developers configure its build and playability in Steamworks, then make signup available and choose how to control access.
Choose an access method
- Limited signup: Players request access from the main game’s store page, and the developer admits them in groups when ready. Steam selects randomly among requesters; the developer can choose countries for regional or server considerations.
- Open signup: Anyone who requests access from the store page is automatically added. Switching from limited to open signup also begins accepting pending requests, generally within a few minutes according to Steam.
- Playtest keys: Developers can request keys for direct distribution. Public signup is not required, and Steam says keys can be generated before the store page is live.
Coordinate test windows and end access
Developers can make the Playtest playable or set it to “Not Playable” when a test ends. For scheduled multiplayer sessions—or to explain when access is ending—Steam recommends communicating through Steam Events and Announcements. If a Playtest is made visible again, participants who already had access retain it and do not need to request or receive access again. Resetting a Playtest is different: it is irreversible, removes participants, and disables its product keys.

What Playtest participation changes—and what it does not
Because the Playtest has its own app ID, Steam separates its activity from the main game. A Playtest participant cannot review the commercial game based only on that participation. Playtest time does not count toward the refund policy for a purchased copy, and Playtest activity does not affect trading cards or achievements. Steam’s descriptions of these distinctions are available in its Playtest documentation and Testing on Steam guidance.
Steam Playtests are free, and keys cannot be sold
Steam describes Playtest as free for both customers and developers. Developers must not charge for access, sell Playtest keys, or include those keys in paid bundles or subscriptions. It is not a way to sell early access to an unfinished game: developers ready to charge for a work-in-progress version should consider Steam Early Access instead. Are Steam Playtests confidential?
No—not when using ordinary public signup. Steam says participants are not under NDAs and developers should not expect secrecy. For a confidential beta, developers need to arrange their own registration and access controls. Steam documents options including a hidden Playtest app with keys or the main game app with release override keys.

Steam’s key guidance generally limits release override keys to 2,500 and directs developers toward Steam Playtest for larger public tests. Because key limits and instructions can change, developers should consult the current Steam testing documentation before requesting or relying on a threshold.
