Streaming can extend Steam Frame playtime compared with running a game locally, but the available numbers come from one game test, not a guarantee. In PC Gamer’s Half-Life: Alyx test, Steam Frame lasted 114 minutes streaming from a PC in Playtime mode, versus 63 minutes running the local Arm version. Streaming shifts the game’s rendering work to the PC; the headset receives and decodes the stream and sends back your input.
How Steam Frame streaming works
Steam Frame is a standalone SteamOS VR headset, but Valve designed it primarily to stream games from a PC. The PC runs the game and renders its visuals; the headset receives the audio and video and returns player input. In local play, the headset instead runs compatible software on its own Snapdragon processor.
Valve says the headset includes a plug-and-play 6 GHz wireless adapter for a dedicated streaming connection. It also has two radios: one dedicated to streaming audio and visuals, and another for Wi-Fi. Valve’s Multi-Link Streaming feature routes data over available headset connections at once, adding real-time redundancy. These are design features, not a guarantee of stream quality: the local wireless environment and network conditions still matter. Valve’s Steam Frame product page describes the system and its intended use.
Foveated Streaming and image detail
Foveated Streaming uses eye-tracking data to prioritize image detail where you are looking and reduce it outside that area. Valve says this typically delivers over a 10x improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth. That is Valve’s claim about streaming quality and bandwidth—not evidence of a 10x improvement in battery life.

Streaming compatibility is not local compatibility
Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes Steam Frame as designed primarily for low-latency streaming of a player’s Steam Library from a PC, while also supporting standalone use. It describes support for SteamVR and OpenXR, supported Windows and Linux PC titles, and native ARM64 and Android-based APKs. A game that can stream from a capable PC is not necessarily verified to run locally on the headset. Valve’s Steamworks Steam Frame documentation distinguishes these capabilities.
What the battery-life test found
PC Gamer reports a 21.6 Wh Li-ion battery in the rear strap. In its 2026 test of Half-Life: Alyx, the headset ran for 114 minutes streaming from a PC with Playtime mode enabled, compared with 63 minutes running the game’s local Arm version. The reviewer measured around 10 W whole-system draw while streaming and 17–19 W during local play. These are results from that game and test, not universal runtimes for every title, connection, or setting. PC Gamer’s review reports the test details.

| Use mode in PC Gamer’s Half-Life: Alyx test | Where the game is rendered | Reported runtime | Measured whole-system draw | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Streamed, Playtime mode | PC | 114 minutes | Around 10 W | Playtime mode favors battery life and limits refresh to 72 Hz. |
| Local Arm version | Steam Frame | 63 minutes | 17–19 W | Local play uses the headset’s processor; the cited test does not establish runtime for other games or settings. |
In that test, streaming used less power because the PC handled game rendering while the headset handled receiving and decoding the stream. This explains why streaming can use less headset power than local play; it does not mean streaming is always more efficient under every condition.
Settings and software that can change runtime
Refresh rate and power mode
PC Gamer says Playtime mode prioritizes battery life and caps refresh at 72 Hz. Higher refresh rates and performance-oriented settings can shorten runtime. The 114-minute result applies specifically to Half-Life: Alyx streamed in Playtime mode, so it should not be treated as the expected duration at higher refresh rates.

SteamOS 0.4.3 beta
On October 2, 2026, PC Gamer reported that Valve’s SteamOS 0.4.3 beta notes claimed improved power efficiency and battery lifetime in both streaming and local gameplay, with gains of up to 12%. Valve’s note says results vary by frame rate and content. “Up to 12%” is a stated maximum for that beta, not an improvement every player should expect; the effect depends on software version and use. PC Gamer’s report covers the beta note.
Keeping a session going longer
PC Gamer reports that charging from empty took 142 minutes using Valve’s adapter and 151 minutes using a 140 W Anker adapter in its tests. The same review says a suitably powerful pocket power bank of around 25 W can help keep the headset going during play. Those are review observations, not a guarantee of charging speed or compatibility for every USB-C power bank and setup.

PC Gamer also reported that Valve was working on a modular strap with hot-swappable batteries, but no launch information was available in the review. Treat it as a reported planned accessory, not a product confirmed as available.

The test supports a practical conclusion for the tested game and settings: streaming lasted longer and drew less power than local play. It does not establish that streaming will always double battery life, or provide a typical runtime across Steam Frame games, refresh rates, wireless environments, or software versions. The 114-minute and 63-minute results are a single-game comparison, while Valve’s later “up to 12%” figure is a beta claim that varies by frame rate and content.

Valve’s product page says, “Streaming can be highly variable, so we prioritized making Steam Frame a stable, high quality streaming experience.” That describes Valve’s design intent; actual stream stability remains dependent on the player’s wireless environment. Valve’s Steam Frame product page also lists approximately 40 hours per single AA battery for each controller; that figure is controller runtime, not headset runtime.
