Labs can use standard consumer-grade 3D printers to build and adapt tools for bacterial research, but each design still needs to be checked for its intended measurement, sample, materials, and workflow. A Umeå University report published October 5, 2026, describes researcher Daniel Nilsson using this approach for tools involving laser-based bacterial detection or manipulation and the cultivation and measurement of biofilms.

What labs have used consumer 3D printers to make

At Umeå University, Daniel Nilsson of the Department of Physics used consumer-grade printers to develop customized instruments for bacterial research. The university report describes tools for detecting and manipulating harmful bacteria with laser light, as well as tools for cultivating and measuring biofilms. It presents the work as a way for researchers to build or adapt equipment around their needs, rather than relying only on standard instruments. Umeå University’s October 5, 2026 report says Nilsson’s thesis includes a practical guide to designing printed tools and integrating open-source electronics.

The report does not provide enough engineering detail to reproduce those instruments on its own. It does not specify printer models, build files, materials, calibration methods, sterilization protocols, or validated performance metrics. The examples show what a customization approach can support; they do not establish that every ordinary printer can make every laboratory instrument.

How 3D printing has been applied to microbiology

Earlier work illustrates a different route: adapting printer hardware itself into a research platform. In a 2019 PLOS ONE study, researchers adapted an open-source 3D printer frame to hold a Raspberry Pi camera, using printed joints and an actuator arrangement for time-lapse imaging. They reported applications including bacterial motility, colony growth, microtitre plates, and microfluidic devices. The authors reported a cost below $700 for that specific system in 2019; it is not a current price or a general estimate for custom lab equipment.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Customizable labware is also the focus of COBLE (Collection of Bespoke Laboratory Equipment), an open-access 2024 paper, which presents modular designs intended to be printed, assembled, and repaired. That kind of modularity can make adaptation easier, but a design still needs to fit the lab’s workflow and requirements.

What to check before using a printed part in a lab

Printing a component is not the same as validating it. Before relying on a custom instrument or labware, assess the specific design and intended use:

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Performance: Identify the measurement, positioning, or repeatability the work requires, then assess whether the completed setup meets it.
  • Workflow and samples: Check that the part fits the biological sample, containers, instruments, and handling steps involved.
  • Materials: Confirm compatibility with the chemicals and reagents the part will contact, as well as its mechanical demands.
  • Cleaning and sterilization: Establish that the exact material and design tolerate the cleaning or sterilization method the protocol requires.
  • Construction and upkeep: Account for assembly, electronics, calibration, repair, and the ability to reproduce the setup consistently.
  • Cost: Compare the total cost of the specific validated setup, rather than treating a printer’s purchase price or an older system’s reported cost as the cost of a finished instrument.

A University of Reading thesis on microbiology labware reports that its authors mostly used PLA and notes that printer and material settings vary. That is an example of material use, not a blanket endorsement of PLA for lab work. Likewise, a methods paper describes printed microbiology parts as easy to sterilize and reuse, but that characterization should not be extended to all polymers, designs, or sterilization procedures.

Where this approach is useful—and where evidence is limited

Printed parts can be valuable when researchers need a shape, fixture, enclosure, or instrument arrangement tailored to a particular experiment. Open-source designs and electronics may also make collaboration and local modification more practical. Nilsson described the work as supporting a “more collaborative and needs-driven approach” to development.

The evidence does not provide a head-to-head comparison of custom printed tools against commercial instruments, nor a quantified estimate of savings from the 2026 work. The Umeå account is a university news report, while the 2019 imaging system and 2024 COBLE designs provide related examples—not independent validation of Nilsson’s instruments. Treat each printed tool as a design-specific build that needs fit-for-purpose assessment before research use.
