SpiralWave says its prototype uses pulsed microwave plasma to combine captured carbon dioxide and water, producing methanol. The device is a prototype, not a documented consumer appliance, and the energy, emissions and scale figures reported so far come from company statements—not independent performance or lifecycle testing.
What is SpiralWave’s device?
SpiralWave is a startup developing equipment intended to remove carbon dioxide from air and convert it into methanol, a liquid fuel. A November 2, 2024 report by Futurism described two prototypes: the smaller Nanobeam and a Microbeam more than six feet tall. The device was highlighted at TechCrunch Disrupt 2024.
The report describes plasma generated by rapid microwave pulses. SpiralWave CEO and cofounder Abed Bukhari said, “You can see the plasma here in very quick pulses. With every pulse, it breaks down CO2.” His account is the company’s explanation of the process; the report does not provide an independently reviewed technical paper confirming how the machine performs.
How is the process supposed to make methanol?
According to Bukhari’s description in Futurism’s report, the pulses carry out a sequence of reactions: the first breaks carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide (CO), the second breaks water into hydrogen (H) and hydroxyl (OH), and the third joins the resulting components into methanol. The intended inputs are captured CO₂, water and electricity to power the process.

This is a company-described mechanism, not a demonstrated recipe with independently verified yields. The report does not establish the device’s complete operating conditions, product purity, measured methanol output, or how much energy is used by the full system—including capturing CO₂ from air.
How much electricity does SpiralWave say it needs?
Futurism reported the following figures from SpiralWave and Bukhari in 2024. They are company-reported estimates, not independently verified measurements. The report does not specify a test protocol or define the system boundary behind the conversion percentages.

The reported electricity requirement is higher for ambient-air CO₂ than for higher-concentration CO₂. That distinction matters because air contains dilute CO₂, while some industrial exhaust streams have more concentrated CO₂. The reported figures alone do not establish the energy demand or performance of a complete commercial system.
Would the fuel actually reduce emissions?
SpiralWave proponents claimed the process could produce 95 percent fewer carbon emissions, as reported by Futurism in 2024. The report does not provide an independent lifecycle assessment or define the comparison and system boundary behind that percentage, so it cannot establish the net climate benefit.

Turning captured CO₂ into methanol makes a fuel, not necessarily permanent carbon removal. If that methanol is burned, its carbon returns to the atmosphere. The overall emissions result would depend on factors the report does not resolve, including the carbon intensity of the electricity, the energy and equipment required to capture and process CO₂, and what conventional fuel or methanol the product replaces. No independently verified lifecycle accounting is established in the report.
Is SpiralWave’s plasma methanol machine real, and can you buy one?
The Nanobeam and Microbeam are described as prototypes, so the report supports that SpiralWave has presented devices—not that they are commercially proven products. It does not establish independent performance testing, operating cost, durability, safety certification or commercial availability. No retail model or consumer accessory is identified; the names refer to industrial prototypes, not products shown as available for purchase.

SpiralWave stated a future scale-up ambition involving a device more than 300 feet tall and extraction of about one gigaton of CO₂ per year. Those figures describe a goal reported in 2024, not demonstrated equipment size or achieved annual capture capacity. The report does not establish that the proposed scale has been built or independently validated.
