In a campaign ESET reported in February 2021, attackers compromised the update mechanism for NoxPlayer, an Android emulator used to play mobile games on PCs and Macs. They sent malicious updates to selected users, not to every NoxPlayer installation. ESET observed five recipients in its telemetry and described the malware as having surveillance capabilities; it did not identify a confirmed operator.
How the NoxPlayer update compromise worked
NoxPlayer lets people run Android apps and games on a computer. ESET said attackers compromised its update mechanism and used tailored malicious updates to deliver malware to selected victims. This differs from an indiscriminate campaign in which every user receives the same malicious file: ESET characterized the operation as highly targeted.
ESET’s timeline traces the first indicators in its telemetry to September 2020. Researchers found explicitly malicious activity on January 25, 2021, and reported it to NoxPlayer’s parent company, BigNox. ESET said the campaign distributed three malware families through malicious updates.
What ESET observed—and what the figures mean
ESET reported that its telemetry covered more than 100,000 users with NoxPlayer installed. Within that telemetry, it identified five recipients of a malicious update. ESET placed those recipients in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Sri Lanka.

Those figures describe ESET’s observed telemetry, not the full number of possible victims worldwide. The report does not establish how many people outside that telemetry may have been affected. Separately, ESET’s February 2021 article cited BigNox’s claim that its product range had more than 150 million users worldwide. That was a product-range figure attributed to BigNox, not a current count or a NoxPlayer-only installation total.
Why ESET thought the campaign might involve intelligence gathering
ESET said the malware had surveillance-related capabilities and saw no sign of financial gain. It assessed that the choice of a gaming-related platform, together with those capabilities, could point to intelligence collection involving people connected in some way to gaming. That was an interpretation, not a confirmed motive. ESET did not name or conclusively identify the threat actor in its report.

What BigNox said it would change
After the report was published, BigNox contacted ESET. In an update dated February 3, 2021, ESET described BigNox’s initial denial as a misunderstanding and summarized measures the company said it would take:
- Use HTTPS for software updates.
- Add file-integrity verification using MD5 hashing and file-signature checks.
- Encrypt sensitive data.
- Check installed application files when NoxPlayer starts.
These were measures BigNox reported after disclosure. ESET expressly said it assumed no responsibility for the accuracy of BigNox’s statements, so they should not be treated as independently verified security guarantees. The 2021 report does not establish NoxPlayer’s current security status or availability.

What ESET advised affected and other users to do
ESET’s guidance was specific to the incident as understood in 2021:
- If you suspected an intrusion: ESET advised reinstalling from clean media.
- If you had not been compromised: ESET advised not downloading updates until BigNox notified users that it had mitigated the threat.
This is historical incident guidance, not a statement about what current NoxPlayer users should do today. The report does not provide a current vendor notice or establish whether the threat remains active.

What the incident does—and does not—show
The incident illustrates why software updates can be a sensitive point of trust: a compromised vendor update channel can deliver malware without a user seeking out or manually installing a suspicious program. But ESET’s account describes a targeted operation with a small number of recipients in its own telemetry, not proof that gamers broadly or all NoxPlayer users were infected.
The clearest supported conclusion is limited: ESET documented a 2020–2021 compromise involving tailored NoxPlayer updates and surveillance-capable malware, observed five recipients in its telemetry, and did not establish who operated the campaign or how many people were affected in total.
