Short software-support periods can push phones and tablets toward replacement before their hardware stops working: without security fixes, bug fixes, or compatibility with newer apps, a device may no longer meet its owner’s needs. That makes software support one contributor to e-waste, alongside durability, repair access and cost, reuse, and recycling—not the sole or proven largest cause.

How software support can shorten a device’s useful life

An operating system update can fix bugs, address security problems, and help a device remain compatible with apps and services. When support ends, the phone or tablet may still turn on and perform basic tasks, but become less secure or unable to run software its owner relies on. App developers may also stop supporting older operating-system versions.

The European Commission’s 2023 impact assessment describes this practical link: “Insufficient software support can lead to premature product replacement, since the product is no longer functioning as required (e.g. lower performance).” The issue is not that every unsupported device becomes unusable; it is that reduced security, performance, or compatibility can make continued use unacceptable or impractical for some people. European Commission impact assessment (2023)

How long should a phone get software updates?

There is no single support period established here that applies to every phone. The Commission’s 2023 assessment, referring to market evidence from a 2021 Commission source, reported that operating-system support for phones and tablets ranged from less than one year to more than five years. That is a historical range, not a current guarantee or a prediction for a particular model.

Rubbermaid Commercial Products Recycling Bin - 18 Gallon, Stackable, for Paper and Packaging, Indoor/Outdoor/Garage/Home/Commercial Facilities, Blue
  • PCR: Made of post-consumer recycled resin for commercial recycling use
  • BUILT-IN HANDLES: Enable easier lifting and carrying

When comparing devices, check the manufacturer’s stated commitment and what it covers. Security updates and operating-system updates are distinct: a promise about one does not automatically establish the duration of the other. Also consider whether updates preserve useful performance and compatibility over time.

Can an old phone still be safe to use?

It depends on the device, its software, the information you use it to access, and whether it still receives security fixes. The Commission notes that discontinued security updates can leave devices less secure. An old phone that no longer receives those updates is not necessarily instantly unsafe or unusable, but the security risk can grow as vulnerabilities emerge without fixes.

For a device used for sensitive accounts or personal data, check its update status with the manufacturer and weigh the remaining risk against your needs. If you keep using it, reduce exposure by limiting sensitive activity and relying on supported apps and services where possible; those steps do not replace missing operating-system security updates.

Does ending updates make a phone obsolete?

Not automatically. “Obsolete” can mean different things: no longer supported by its maker, no longer compatible with important apps, too risky for a user’s security needs, or no longer worth repairing. End of support is one warning sign, not proof that the hardware has no remaining use.

Some devices may remain suitable for less demanding tasks, be passed to another user, or be repaired. Others may be replaced because an essential app stops working or the owner cannot accept the security trade-off. The decision turns on practical needs as well as the device’s technical condition.

Why software support is only one part of e-waste

Electronic waste has several causes and potential interventions. The European Commission Joint Research Centre reported in 2022 that EU electronic waste was growing by an estimated 2% annually and that less than 40% was recycled. These are EU-wide figures, not a measurement of how much e-waste is caused specifically by short software-support periods. The ITU’s durability framework treats software and firmware support as one dimension alongside repair, maintenance information, parts, data security, manufacturer service, reuse, and recycling. This matters because a long update commitment cannot by itself keep a device in service if a broken screen, unavailable part, high repair bill, or lack of repair information makes fixing it impractical. ITU-T L.1018 (approved 2025-07-29)

Can repairing a phone reduce e-waste?

Repair can extend a phone’s service life when it restores a device that would otherwise be replaced, but whether it is practical depends on the fault, the availability of parts and instructions, repair tools, cost, and the device’s remaining software support. ITU-T L.1018 includes repair documentation and necessary equipment in its maintainability framework; it also addresses spare-part availability and tools that may be needed after certain part replacements.

What EU rules say—and whom they cover

EU Regulation 2023/1670 establishes ecodesign requirements for specified mobile phones, smartphones, cordless phones, and slate tablets. Its provisions include requirements concerning the availability and timing of security and corrective updates, as well as access, in specified serialized-part cases, to software or firmware tools needed to make replacement parts function. These are EU requirements for products within the regulation’s scope, not worldwide rules or a general guarantee for every device. Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1670

Directive (EU) 2024/825 identifies early obsolescence as harmful because it increases waste and the use of energy and materials. It also addresses withholding information when a software update negatively affects a product’s functioning. Directive (EU) 2024/825

How to judge whether a device can stay useful longer

  • Update commitment: Check the stated duration and scope of security and operating-system updates.
  • Real-world utility: Consider whether updates maintain performance and compatibility with the apps and services you need.
  • Repairability: Look for accessible repair information, diagnostics, tools, and replacement parts.
  • Repair economics: Compare the likely repair cost and availability with replacement, taking the device’s remaining support into account.
  • Next use: If it no longer suits you, consider whether it can be reused by someone else or sent through responsible recycling.
