Smart glasses work by combining eyewear with compact electronics in the frame. Depending on the model, they may take photos, capture voice, play sound, connect to a phone, or show a small image in the wearer’s view. Camera-and-audio glasses may have no screen at all; only display-equipped models add visual information to the lens.
What makes glasses “smart”?
The term covers several kinds of eyewear rather than one standard design. A frame may contain a camera, microphones, open-ear speakers, wireless radios, storage, a battery, and touch or voice controls. Some models add a visual display; others focus on capturing images and playing audio.
That distinction matters: smart glasses are not automatically augmented-reality glasses with a screen. Google’s Android XR demo describes camera-and-audio glasses, while Meta Ray-Ban Display is an example of a model with a lens display. Their features should not be treated as universal category capabilities.
How do smart glasses display images?
Display glasses use a small image source and optics to direct light toward the wearer’s eye while leaving the real scene visible. A waveguide is one possible approach: optical elements in or around the lens guide and redirect display light. The exact design varies, and not every display model is established to use the same waveguide architecture. Lumus describes geometric waveguide technology, while Android’s developer documentation describes an additive display in which pure black appears transparent and darker colors emit less light, making them appear less opaque.

For a product-specific example, Ray-Ban lists Meta Ray-Ban Display with a full-color, 600×600-pixel display built into the right lens. The manufacturer describes uses including walking directions, translated captions, messages, and music controls. These are features of that product, not a specification for all smart glasses.
How do the camera and microphones work?
A camera mounted on the frame can record photos or video from roughly the wearer’s point of view. Microphones pick up speech for calls and voice commands; on some products they also record audio alongside video. What the camera can capture and how the glasses process that information depend on the model.
Google’s Android XR glasses demo announcement says its demonstrated glasses use a camera and microphones to let Gemini “see and hear the world.” That describes Google’s demo, not a guarantee that all glasses have an AI assistant or process information in the same way.

How do smart glasses play audio?
Small speakers built into the frame can deliver calls, music, prompts, or assistant responses while leaving the wearer’s ears uncovered. The microphones can provide voice input as well as support calls. Google describes speakers for AI responses, music, and calls in its Android XR demo; Meta’s developer documentation describes playback through the glasses’ speaker.

How do smart glasses connect to a phone?
A phone commonly acts as a companion device and connection to apps or online services. Depending on the glasses, it may be used for pairing, account setup, app access, network requests, or importing photos and video. Bluetooth can support pairing or audio, while Wi-Fi or a phone tether can carry online requests and larger transfers. Meta’s developer documentation specifically describes live data over glasses Wi-Fi or a phone tether.

For Meta Ray-Ban Display, the manufacturer requires a supported Android or iOS phone, the Meta AI mobile app, a Meta account, and wireless internet access. Meta says some captures and voice controls work without Wi-Fi, while Meta AI, capture imports, and software updates require Wi-Fi. Requirements differ by model, so check the current compatibility and connectivity details for the exact glasses you are considering.

The battery powers the frame’s electronics, while built-in storage can hold captures until they are transferred. Touchpads and voice are common input methods for audio and display glasses, according to Android’s developer documentation. Controls and capacity vary by model.
For example, Meta’s product page for Ray-Ban Meta Blayzer Optics (Gen 2) lists 32 GB of storage and claims 8+ hours of battery life. Those are specifications for that named model, not a category-wide result. Meta Ray-Ban Display also supports an optional Neural Band, alongside voice and display interactions.

What to compare when choosing smart glasses
Start with the tasks you want the glasses to perform, then check the exact model’s requirements and availability in your market. Useful comparison points include:
- Display: Whether the glasses have a screen, where it appears, and what glanceable tasks it supports.
- Camera and microphones: Whether they capture photos, video, or audio, and how voice commands or calls work.
- Audio: Whether speakers are built in and what playback and call controls the model offers.
- Phone and connectivity: Supported phone operating systems, required app or account, and which features need Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or a phone connection.
- Battery and storage: The manufacturer’s figures for the specific model, rather than assumptions based on another pair of glasses.
- Fit and prescription: Whether the frame fits comfortably and prescription lenses are offered for your needs.
- Regional availability: Features and requirements may differ by market, so confirm the local product information.
