USDS is a Sky Protocol stablecoin designed to target $1, not a token whose market price is guaranteed to stay there. Sky describes a 1:1 USDS–USDC conversion route intended to support the peg, while collateral backs protocol obligations. Those mechanisms can help keep USDS near its target, but access, liquidity, collateral quality, contracts, or governance can fail or come under stress.
What USDS is—and what a dollar peg means
USDS is Sky Protocol’s dollar-targeting stablecoin. Its $1 value is a design objective supported by protocol mechanisms and market incentives; it is not a promise that every exchange, wallet, or conversion route will always quote or deliver exactly $1. A market price can move away from the target, especially if liquidity is strained, confidence in backing falls, or a stabilization route is unavailable.
It helps to separate three questions: what backs the system, what mechanisms are intended to keep USDS near $1, and who or what can change those mechanisms. Collateral, conversion liquidity, and governance are connected, but they are not interchangeable assurances.
How does USDS hold its peg?
The USDS–USDC Peg Stability Module
Sky describes its Peg Stability Module (PSM) as a contract that allows USDS and USDC to be exchanged 1:1 in either direction. Sky’s June 2026 explainer says this route has no protocol fee; network gas still applies. That description concerns the protocol route, not universal access for every person, jurisdiction, interface, or chain.

The route can create an arbitrage incentive. If USDS trades below $1 and a participant can access the PSM, that participant could buy discounted USDS and exchange it for USDC at par. The potential gain can encourage buying pressure on USDS and move its market price toward the target. In the reverse direction, the PSM offers a route from USDC into USDS. These incentives depend on the route operating, available liquidity, costs, market access, and confidence; they do not force every market price to equal $1.
What the reported PSM liquidity figure tells you
Sky.money’s October 2, 2026 explainer reported $4.1 billion in PSM Vault stablecoin liquidity, citing the Sky Ecosystem Financial Dashboard’s September 2026 figure. This is an issuer-reported, dated snapshot—not a live balance, independent verification, or proof that the PSM could meet any hypothetical redemption demand. PSM liquidity is also distinct from the broader collateral backing protocol obligations.
How is USDS backed?
Sky.money’s June 12, 2026 explainer described collateral across stablecoins, onchain and over-the-counter crypto lending, short-duration U.S. Treasury bill exposure through Sky Agents, AAA corporate debt, and other approved positions. The breadth of those categories does not by itself establish the risk, liquidity, concentration, or accessibility of each individual position.

That June 12, 2026 Sky.money snapshot reported $14.39 billion in total collateral against $10.6 billion in loan coverage. These are issuer-published dashboard figures for that date, not current October 2026 balances or independent assurance. Sky says collateral and obligations are publicly inspectable, but visibility into reported data does not make assets risk-free, immediately liquid, or guaranteed to cover every claim under stress.

Collateral coverage and PSM liquidity answer different questions. The first concerns assets relative to protocol loan coverage; the second is a dated measure of stablecoin liquidity in the PSM. Neither figure alone establishes that every USDS holder has an unconditional right or practical ability to redeem immediately at $1.
USDS, DAI, and sUSDS are different
| Token | Role | Conversion or rate distinction |
|---|---|---|
| USDS | Sky Protocol’s dollar-targeting base stablecoin. | Sky documents a separate 1:1 conversion route with USDC through the PSM, subject to route availability and conditions. |
| DAI | A distinct legacy stablecoin, not another name for USDS. | Sky’s documented DAI–USDS converter allows 1:1 conversion in either direction with no fees on that route; the documentation says fees cannot be enabled for this converter. |
| sUSDS | A separate savings token, not USDS itself. | It accesses the Sky Savings Rate, which is variable and can change. USDS alone does not generate yield. |
The USDS documentation describes the DAI–USDS converter separately from the USDS–USDC PSM: the former connects DAI and USDS, while the latter is the route Sky describes as supporting the dollar peg. Technical descriptions of the USDS deployment—including its ERC-20 permit functionality, EIP-1271 smart-contract signature validation, and UUPS upgradeability using ERC-1967 proxy storage standards—refer to the Ethereum deployment. They should not be assumed to describe every chain deployment or wrapper.

Does USDS generate yield on its own?
No. Sky says USDS itself does not generate yield. sUSDS is the separate savings product associated with the Sky Savings Rate, which Sky says is variable and governance-determined. Sky.money’s homepage disclaimer, accessed October 7, 2026, says SKY token holders determine the rate and other protocol parameters through decentralized onchain voting, and they may change or eliminate them.
Other products or strategies—including stUSDS, fixed-yield integrations, and lending vaults—are not interchangeable with holding USDS. Their rates, exit terms, contracts, and dependencies can differ. Sky.money does not guarantee third-party integrations or market-set strategies.

Sky’s security documentation, accessed October 7, 2026, says Global Settlement and the Emergency Shutdown mechanism are deprecated, and the emergency trigger threshold is set very high. They should not be treated as a readily available, universal exit guarantee.

Market, liquidity, and conversion risk
USDS can trade below or above $1. A conversion route may not be accessible to a particular holder or may be disrupted; transaction costs, available liquidity, and market confidence can also affect whether arbitrage is practical. The existence of a 1:1 route is not a guarantee that every holder can use it at every time or receive an immediate dollar of value through every venue.
Collateral and counterparty risk
Collateral can lose value, become difficult to sell, be concentrated, or be temporarily inaccessible. Stablecoin holdings, lending exposures, Sky Agents, and offchain assets introduce different counterparties and dependencies. The published collateral categories and aggregate snapshots do not establish the current position-by-position risk.

Oracle, contract, and upgrade risk
Collateral valuations rely on price inputs, so faulty or delayed data can affect protocol decisions even where protective mechanisms exist. USDS is explicitly designed to be upgradeable; that gives the system a way to change its implementation, and it is also a control surface and risk factor. The cited documentation does not establish a complete independent audit record or assurance against future defects.
Governance and liquidation risk
SKY governance can change protocol parameters, including rates and other settings. A delay and onchain voting process do not ensure that every outcome will protect each holder. In stressed markets, auction participation and external market depth may also prove insufficient despite limits intended to reduce liquidation pressure.
How to assess a peg claim
When evaluating USDS—or comparing it with another stablecoin—separate design from demonstrated performance. Check what backs the token, who can use each redemption or conversion route and under what conditions, how much liquidity is available and when it was measured, who controls upgrades and risk parameters, and how the token and its routes behaved during stress. A dashboard snapshot can inform that assessment, but it is not a substitute for current data or independent evidence of performance.
