Signal’s approach to spam combines server-side detection with message-request controls that let recipients review, reject, block, or report unknown senders. The design aims to limit abuse without inspecting message contents or detailed social graphs. Signal has described the approach, but has not published current figures showing how much spam it blocks or how often it mistakenly flags legitimate messages.
How Signal describes its anti-spam system
Signal says its end-to-end encryption and limited access to social-graph data mean it cannot use the same broad plaintext inspection and relationship analysis that some services use for spam classification. Instead, its approach combines changes in the app with a server component intended to detect and disrupt spam campaigns.
In a 2021 explanation, Signal said the spam-specific server implementation would remain private so spammers could not easily study the defenses and adapt their tactics. Signal said the component’s interfaces would be public, while its protocols, cryptography, and other server interactions remained open to inspection. This is Signal’s account of its design, not an independent assessment of its effectiveness. Signal’s explanation of its anti-spam work.
What happens when an unknown person messages you
Message requests give recipients a chance to assess a conversation before accepting it. Signal’s 2021 description says requests from people outside a user’s contacts include contextual information, and that unknown senders’ profile photos are blurred until tapped. URLs in the request screen are not made clickable, reducing the chance of opening a link before deciding whether to trust the sender.
#1 Best Overall
- Distraction Free: The MP02 4G cell phone makes it easier to be where you are—whether that’s a weekend away or an important business meeting. Keep what matters close with calls and SMS-first texting, without the constant onslaught of designed-for-addiction notifications.

- Carrier Compatibility & Connection: AT&T is supported (coverage verified, VoLTE supported). T-Mobile is supported, but VoLTE is not supported. Verizon is not supported. The MP02 supports 4G LTE across key bands (2G: 850/900/1800/1900 3G: WCDMA 1/2/4/5/6/8/19 4G: FDD LTE 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/17/19/20).
- Simple By Design: A minimalist interface keeps everyday actions straightforward. Call and text buttons provide quick access, while a streamlined menu helps you stay focused on essentials. Note: messaging is SMS-first (MMS group chats aren’t supported), helping to keep communication simple.
- Built for Everyday: Designed for comfortable one-handed use with a clean, minimalist silhouette. Reinforced glass fiber construction supports daily use, while the lightweight shape makes it easy to carry anywhere.
From a request, users can accept the conversation, delete it, block the sender, or report it as spam. Signal Support also describes reporting and blocking from chat settings. For the exact steps and current safety guidance, see How to protect yourself on Signal.
How privacy and spam controls trade off
| Approach | What it offers | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Server-side detection | Can identify and disrupt campaigns without relying on broad access to message text or detailed social graphs, according to Signal. | The spam-specific implementation is not public, which limits outside inspection of that part of the system. |
| Message requests and recipient reports | Let users review unknown senders and choose whether to accept, block, or report them. | Some friction falls on the recipient, who must assess unsolicited requests. |

- Phone + Key Daily Security: Crivon faraday bags pair a large phone faraday bag with a compact key fob pouch, letting you store your phone offline for quiet focus and everyday security while keeping key fob signals harder to access during daily carry. These faraday bags for phones and faraday bags for car keys work like a signal blocking pouch for travel, office, gym locker, purse, or backpack routines—drop the device in, close the flap, and keep it sealed for full protection
- Fireproof & Waterproof Build: Crivon phone faraday bag adds physical defense, not just digital protection. The phone pouch uses a fireproof fiberglass outer layer with double shielding cloth inside and a scratch-resistant surface, helping protect your device from harsh weather, spills, and daily wear. The carbon fiber PU key fob protector pouch is waterproof and tough for cars, backpacks, and pockets—plus a detachable wrist strap for quick grab-and-go carry—built for travel and everyday carry
- Blocks 5G/WiFi/Bluetooth/GPS/RFID: Crivon faraday pouch design is made to block common wireless signals fast, including cellular (5G/4G), WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and RFID/NFC scans. This cell phone signal blocking bag works as a cell phone signal blocker and phone faraday bag / faraday phone pouch for everyday privacy, while the key fob signal blocking pouch works as an RFID key fob protector and key fob cover to help reduce keyless-entry exposure when your keys are in your pocket or bag
- Sized for Real Devices: Crivon faraday bags are sized for real devices, not just cards. Phone pouch inner size is 7.8” x 4.13” so a faraday phone bag / cell phone faraday bag fits many iPhone and other phones; this faraday phone case-style pouch stays slim in a pocket. Key pouch inner size is 5.5” x 3” for most key fob cover and key protector needs on a keychain. if you use a bulky phone case, test fit so the flap closes flat. Also works as an RFID blocking bag for credit cards and IDs
- Seal-First 1-Minute Test: Crivon faraday cage-style pouch use is easy to confirm. Phone test: place the phone inside the faraday phone bag, seal the closure fully, then try a call or Bluetooth pairing. Key test: place the fob inside the faraday bag for key fob, seal fully, then try unlocking the car. If it passes, your device is locked in a safe signal shield—keep the flap fully sealed for best blocking performance. If it fails, reseal and keep devices away from the opening for better blocking
Protect your account and verify suspicious contacts
- Read the request and its safety tips before accepting a conversation.
- Report and block unwanted senders from the request or chat settings.
- Never share your SMS verification code, Signal PIN, or recovery key. Signal Support warns that these credentials can be used to compromise an account.
- Treat a purported Signal Support message in an ordinary, reply-capable chat as suspicious. Signal Support says it does not initiate contact that way.
- Signal does not verify profile names or identities. Confirm a person through another trusted channel when identity matters. See Signal’s guidance on phishing, scams, and impersonation.
Use a username to avoid sharing your phone number
A Signal username can let you connect with someone without giving them your phone number. It is a privacy option for starting contact, not a replacement for the phone number required to register. Signal’s 2024 announcement also says phone numbers are not visible to everyone by default. Details are in Signal’s announcement about phone-number privacy and usernames.
What Signal has not established publicly
Signal has not published a current spam-blocking rate, report volume, campaign-disruption total, or false-positive rate in the material cited here. Its public descriptions explain the intended design, but do not quantify how well it performs. A 2026 announcement describes an additional confirmation when accepting message requests; it does not establish a complete rollout matrix across platforms, app versions, or regions. - SECURE TRANSMISSION: Encrypted signal transmission ensures alarm events, status updates, and system communications are sent securely to monitoring services
Two cost figures sometimes mentioned in discussions of Signal concern service operations, not spam performance. In 2023, Signal said phone-number verification services for registration and re-registration averaged about $6 million per year at that time. It also estimated that total annual operating needs would reach approximately $50 million by 2025; that was a forecast made in 2023, not a verified statement of actual 2025 spending. Neither figure measures spam prevention. Signal’s 2023 explanation of its costs.

Signal’s 2018 technical preview of sealed sender illustrates the broader challenge of balancing privacy with abuse controls. It described short-lived sender certificates and recipient-derived delivery tokens intended to preserve protections such as sender authentication and rate limiting while reducing sender information visible to the service. That preview is technical history; it does not establish the full implementation of Signal’s current anti-spam system. Signal’s sealed-sender preview.
