On a downhill test, your toes should not hit the front of the shoe and your heel should stay put. Fit both feet in the socks and insoles you plan to wear; if lacing adjustments do not fix slipping or pressure, try a different shoe shape or volume rather than automatically sizing up.
How much room should you have in trail-running shoes?
Leave enough space at the front for your toes to wiggle and spread without pressing against the shoe. REI’s Trail-Running Shoes Buying Guide, updated November 11, 2025, suggests about a thumbnail’s length of toe room. The Washington Trails Association (WTA) recommends at least a half-inch, particularly for downhill hiking, in its footwear guide. These are practical recommendations, not a universal measured standard; use the downhill test as well as the static space check.
Extra length is not a fix for every tight or uncomfortable fit. Shoe lasts differ in toe-box shape, midfoot width, heel width, and overall volume. A shoe can feel cramped because it is too narrow or has too little volume, even if its length is right. Conversely, too much room can let the foot slide and cause rubbing or hot spots.
How to check the fit before buying
- Try both shoes later in the day. Feet may be larger then, and one foot can be larger than the other. Fit the larger foot. Wear the socks you expect to use and bring your usual insoles or orthotics.
- Check the whole foot, not just the toe. Your toes should move freely, while the shoe should not pinch the sides or press uncomfortably across the top. A fit specialist can help assess width, arch length, and shoe volume.
- Secure the heel and midfoot. Lace the shoe snugly, not tightly. Your heel should remain held when you walk, without pressure or rubbing. A runner’s loop can help lock the heel in place.
- Walk, then test a slope. Move around in the shoes and, if possible, walk down an incline. Your toes should not strike the front and your heel should not lift or slide. Reject a fit that pinches, rubs, or causes toe impact on the descent.
- Adjust or change the shoe. Try a different lacing pattern first if the heel slips. If the problem persists, compare another size, width, volume, or brand. A different last may solve the issue better than adding length.
Should your toes touch the front downhill?
No. If your toes hit the front when walking downhill, the shoe is not holding your foot securely enough for that descent, or its shape and size do not suit you. Recheck the lacing and heel hold, then test again on a slope. WTA recommends trying footwear on slopes, and REI’s guide to hiking boots and hiking shoes advises moving around in footwear and checking for toe impact on an incline.

Do not judge downhill fit only while standing still: a shoe that feels comfortable on level ground may let the foot slide forward on a slope. If snugging the laces causes pressure across the top of your foot, try a different shoe shape or volume rather than tightening further.
How to stop your heel slipping
First, lace the shoe snugly and try a runner’s loop, which can help secure the heel. The heel should feel held without being painfully compressed. If it still slips, or tightening the laces creates pressure elsewhere, the heel shape or overall volume may not match your foot. Try another size, width, or brand last instead of assuming a longer shoe will solve it.

Can you hike in trail-running shoes?
Yes, trail-running shoes can work for hiking, but the right choice depends on the route, pack weight, and how much durability and support you want. REI describes rugged-trail running shoes as designed for hiking trails and suggests considering off-trail models for hiking, backpacking, or thru-hiking when added durability and support are priorities.
Match the outsole and construction to the ground you expect. Deeper, widely spaced lugs are intended for loose, wet, or muddy terrain; they may feel less comfortable on hard, even surfaces. Shallower, closely spaced lugs are designed for grip and a smoother ride on hard-packed, even routes. Compare the shoe’s toe-box shape, heel hold, volume, protection, stability, and lug pattern with your route rather than choosing by the label alone.
