Screenshot APIs do not handle cookie-consent banners in one standard way. A provider may remove the banner, click a control, hide selected elements, or leave the page untouched. Defaults differ: ScreenshotAPI documents automatic dismissal enabled by default, while ScreenshotEngine documents banner blocking disabled by default. Treat every setting as vendor-specific, verify the resulting image on representative pages, and distinguish a visual cleanup from an actual consent choice.
What “handling” a cookie banner can mean
Before comparing services, define the operation you need. Documentation uses similar language for materially different actions:
- Remove or block: the service attempts to prevent the consent dialog or overlay from appearing in the captured page.
- Click a control: a browser automation script finds a button such as Reject, Decline, or Accept and activates it.
- Hide an element: CSS or a curated list makes the overlay invisible without documenting that a preference was recorded.
- Leave it visible: the capture preserves what an ordinary visitor would see at that moment.
These outcomes are not interchangeable. A clean image can result from hiding an overlay, while a click may change cookies, network requests, and subsequent page content. Vendor documentation reviewed for this topic describes capture behavior; it does not establish that an automated action satisfies consent law in any particular jurisdiction.

Read the exact parameter reference for the endpoint and version you use. Names, defaults, and browser behavior are not portable between products.

Choosing the behavior for your use case
Preserving the visitor’s first view
Leave banner handling off when your objective is visual QA, documentation, or an audit of what a new visitor sees. If the API defaults to blocking, explicitly disable that option and record the setting with the capture metadata.
Producing an unobstructed page image
Enable the provider’s documented removal option, then inspect samples from every important site and locale. A removal rule can miss a custom banner, and an overly broad rule can remove legitimate page content.
Recording a deliberate preference
Use a browser workflow that targets the intended control—such as Reject or Decline—rather than a generic “accept” selector. Store the resulting cookies or session state only when your product and legal review permit it. A screenshot alone cannot prove what preference was recorded.

DIY workflow with a hosted browser
A reliable custom flow waits for the page to settle, checks whether a specific selector is visible, performs the intended action, and captures afterward. Browserless examples demonstrate network-idle waits, conditional selector checks, and screenshots after interaction. Adapt selectors to the consent framework used by the target site.
- Navigate and wait: use the provider’s network-idle or equivalent wait, plus a bounded delay when the banner is injected after initial load.
- Check conditionally: test for a visible button before clicking so pages without a banner still succeed.
- Choose a narrow selector: target a known reject, decline, or accept button for that site. Examples in Browserless documentation include
[id*=accept],[class*=accept], and#onetrust-accept-btn-handler; broad accept matches can encode an unwanted choice. - Allow the page to react: wait for the dialog to disappear or for the relevant navigation and cookies to settle.
- Capture and validate: save the image and check that the intended content, viewport, and consent state appear.

The following pattern is intentionally site-specific: replace selectors and the intended action rather than blindly clicking the first button containing “accept.”

Do not run both indiscriminately: a second click can select a different preference or fail after the modal has gone.
Capture timing and viewport are separate controls
Banner handling cannot compensate for capturing at the wrong moment or size. ScreenshotAPI documents navigation wait strategies, selectors, viewport settings, and delay; ScreenshotEngine documents viewport options and wait delays. Configure these independently:

- Wait for a meaningful state: network idle is useful for late-loaded consent scripts, while a selector wait is more deterministic when the page has a known content landmark.
- Use a bounded delay for injection: some banners appear after analytics or tag-manager code runs. Keep the delay finite so a broken script does not stall every job.
- Set the viewport explicitly: responsive banners can differ between desktop and mobile widths.
- Do not assume device emulation: ScreenshotEngine says its viewport presets do not emulate a physical device’s browser, touch input, user agent, or pixel density.

Reliability, validation, and cost controls
Validate representative pages
- Include sites with different consent frameworks, languages, desktop/mobile layouts, and delayed banner injection.
- Compare an untouched capture, the provider’s automatic mode, and your custom fallback.
- Check both the pixels and the page state: a hidden overlay may leave focus traps, blocked scrolling, or unchanged consent cookies.
- Keep a record of the option name, default, viewport, wait strategy, and timestamp for reproducibility.
Control failures
Use timeouts and retries only for transient navigation failures. If a selector is absent, continue when the banner is optional; if a required preference cannot be made, fail loudly rather than silently taking an unintended action. Capture provider verdict headers or job status where available so billing and page failures are distinguishable.
Control spend

Troubleshooting common banner failures
The banner is still visible
Confirm the option name and default for the exact endpoint, increase the bounded wait, and inspect whether the banner is inside an iframe or shadow DOM. Add a site-specific selector fallback and retest at the actual viewport.
The wrong button was clicked
Replace broad matches such as a generic “accept” selector with a unique attribute or container-scoped selector for the intended Reject, Decline, or Accept action. Log the matched element before clicking in development.

Wait for the post-click navigation or rendering event, then capture. Check whether a script, request block, cookie, or custom header required by the page was removed along with the banner.
Mobile and desktop results disagree
Set explicit viewport dimensions and user-agent behavior, and test both layouts. A viewport preset is not necessarily full physical-device emulation.

Jobs time out
Reduce unbounded delays, wait for a specific selector instead of indefinitely waiting for all network activity, and identify third-party requests that never settle. Use a bounded retry for transient network errors only.
What the documentation does—and does not—prove
The reviewed vendor pages describe intended features, not an independent benchmark. None supplies a universal detection guarantee or a named success-rate statistic. “Attempts removal,” “covers most major platforms,” and “automatically dismisses” should therefore be read as product descriptions to validate against your own pages. Automated cleanup is also not a legal determination about consent; obtain jurisdiction-specific advice when your workflow makes a real privacy choice.

Should I always disable cookie-banner blocking?
No. Disable it when you need to document the untouched visitor view; enable and validate it when you need an unobstructed image.
Is clicking Accept the same as hiding the banner?
No. Clicking can record a preference and alter later requests, while hiding changes only the rendered appearance.
Can one selector work across every website?
No. Consent frameworks and markup vary, so use provider coverage where appropriate and maintain narrow, site-specific fallbacks.
