Scientists estimate a toothed whale’s age by counting growth-layer groups (GLGs) in a prepared tooth section, then interpreting the count using evidence about how often those layers form in that species and tissue. In Cook Inlet belugas, researchers validated annual dentine GLGs; the same assumption should not automatically be applied to every toothed whale. Tooth layers can also preserve chemical evidence about feeding ecology over time.

How a tooth becomes an age estimate

A whale tooth contains dentine around a central pulp cavity, with cementum on the root. As the tooth grows, alternating features form in these tissues. Researchers prepare a thin section and count the visible growth-layer groups rather than estimating age from tooth size alone.

A count is an age estimate only when the layer-deposition pattern is known or appropriately validated for the species and tissue being examined. In a Cook Inlet beluga study, thin tooth sections were used to validate annual deposition of dentine GLGs, supporting age estimates and later growth analyses. NOAA Fisheries’ 2019 research summary describes that work.

The tissue used is not identical across species. A 2018 review in NAMMCO Scientific Publications says dentine is the primary basis for age estimation in most homodont toothed whales, while cementum is important for some exceptions, including certain beaked whales and river dolphins. Beluga teeth may have countable layers in both tissues, but preparation and interpretation remain species-specific.

What tooth-based age records can show

Age, body growth, and population structure

Once researchers have an age estimate, they can compare it with body length to study length at age and growth patterns. The Cook Inlet beluga work developed sex-specific growth curves, helping researchers describe life history at the population level. NOAA’s Cook Inlet Beluga Age and Growth record also describes the relationship between tooth position and counts.

Feeding ecology through chemical evidence

Researchers can measure stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios in tooth growth layers. These values provide evidence about feeding ecology across the animal’s life, complementing the chronology from the layers themselves. A NOAA-hosted study, “Fifty years of Cook Inlet beluga whale feeding ecology from isotopes in bone and teeth”, reports decreasing δ15N and δ13C trends in sampled Cook Inlet belugas from 1962 to 2007. That finding describes the study’s samples; it does not establish a trend for all belugas or, by itself, explain what caused the change.

Why the count is not a universal whale clock

  • Species and tissue matter. Annual GLG deposition has been validated for dentine in the cited Cook Inlet beluga analysis; a rate should not be presumed for every toothed whale or tissue.
  • Tooth position can affect the count. Researchers compared teeth from different positions in the mandible in beluga work, so counts from different teeth should not be treated as automatically interchangeable.
  • Wear can erase evidence. Outer layers may be worn away or obscured, making the count lower than the animal’s actual age.
  • Isotopes are evidence, not a complete explanation. A chemical pattern can inform feeding ecology but does not alone identify every prey item or establish the cause of a change.

NOAA’s Beluga Whale: Science page describes an oldest recorded beluga with 80 GLGs and cautions that wear could mean the animal was older than the tooth count indicates. This is a documented record, not a biological maximum.

What specimens the method requires

Traditional tooth-based beluga age assessment relies on a tooth specimen, generally from a dead or stranded whale or one harvested by subsistence hunters; it is not ordinarily a non-invasive test on a living animal. In a NOAA Fisheries feature about an epigenetic age clock, marine mammal biologist Paul Wade described the traditional approach: “We had to rely on getting tooth samples from either stranded, dead whales or those harvested by subsistence hunters. We would then count annual growth-layer groups in each tooth to estimate the whale’s age.”

Teeth apply to toothed whales, not all whales

This method concerns odontocetes, the toothed whales. Baleen whales have baleen rather than teeth, so chemical or hormone measurements made in baleen are separate methods and should not be confused with tooth-layer analysis.
