Scientists track ocean acidification by measuring several parts of seawater chemistry and comparing those measurements with observations of marine organisms. No single pH reading captures the whole carbonate system or proves how a species is responding. Research cruises, sensors, field surveys, laboratory experiments and ecosystem models each answer different parts of the question.
What scientists measure in seawater
Ocean acidification is a change in the seawater carbonate system. NOAA identifies four core measurements: pH, partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2), total alkalinity (TA) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). Each describes a different aspect of the system, and researchers can measure two to calculate the others and characterize conditions. NOAA’s overview of ocean acidification and its monitoring guidance explain these measurements.
- pH tracks hydrogen-ion activity. A lower pH indicates greater acidity.
- pCO2 indicates the pressure of carbon dioxide dissolved in seawater.
- Total alkalinity describes seawater’s capacity to buffer changes in acidity.
- DIC is the non-biological carbon dissolved in seawater as carbon dioxide, bicarbonate and carbonate.
Researchers also use aragonite saturation (Ωar) as an indicator of conditions relevant to organisms that build calcium-carbonate shells or skeletons. NOAA’s ocean acidification data resources include pCO2, pH and aragonite saturation among their indicators. These measures are related but not interchangeable: pH describes acidity, while mineral saturation helps indicate how favorable seawater is for forming or maintaining calcium-carbonate structures.
Why multiple measurements matter
When seawater absorbs carbon dioxide, chemical reactions produce more hydrogen ions and lower pH. Increasing acidity also reduces the saturation or availability of calcium carbonate minerals used by many organisms to build shells and skeletons, as NOAA explains in its ocean acidification overview. A pH trend alone does not show every aspect of carbonate chemistry; alkalinity and DIC help characterize the system, while saturation adds information relevant to calcifiers. These chemical changes indicate potential challenges, not a uniform biological outcome for every species.

How scientists collect measurements
Different observing methods trade off continuity, geographic reach, depth coverage and the ability to pair chemistry with biology. The methods complement one another rather than serving as substitutes. NOAA describes the following approaches in its monitoring guidance.
| Method | What it contributes | What it is best suited to show |
|---|---|---|
| Research cruises | Water samples from selected depths, plus measurements such as oxygen, nutrients and biological properties. | Water-column and spatial context; high-quality reference measurements that can help evaluate sensor data. |
| Buoys and moorings | Repeated sensor readings at a fixed location; some buoy sensors measure pCO2 at intervals. Other platform types include wave gliders and saildrones. | How local conditions change through time. |
| Ships of opportunity | Underway measurements collected by instrumented commercial or other vessels along their routes. | Geographic reach along transit paths, including waters sampled less often. |
| Reef and coastal monitoring | Carbonate chemistry measurements combined with benthic surveys, calcification accretion units and other reef observations. | How local chemistry coincides with calcifiers, coral cover, algae and fish communities. |
From a water sample to a time series
On a research cruise, a CTD measures conductivity, temperature and depth. A rosette commonly carries Niskin bottles that collect water at selected depths. Researchers analyze the samples for carbonate-system parameters and can measure oxygen, nutrients and biological properties as well. A cruise provides a snapshot across locations and depths; fixed platforms add repeated observations at one place, making local changes easier to track.

Instrumented vessels extend coverage along their routes, while reef monitoring brings chemistry and organism observations together at a local scale. Each approach has limits in where and when it samples, so combining them gives a more useful picture than relying on a single platform.
How dashboards fit in
Data portals and ecosystem indicators organize observations so people can explore them across locations and measures. NOAA points to national and global resources, including the GOA-ON data explorer, through its data page. A dashboard summarizes underlying observations; it does not replace the measurements, sampling methods or quality checks behind them.

How researchers connect chemistry to marine life
Chemical measurements show what conditions are present; biological observations and experiments help establish what organisms experience and how they respond. NOAA describes research that combines controlled experiments with field studies in its biological response overview.
Experiments test sensitivity
In controlled laboratory experiments, scientists vary conditions such as pH, temperature or other carbonate-system variables, then observe behavioral or physiological responses. Studying different life stages can reveal whether sensitivity changes as an organism develops. Because researchers can control conditions, experiments help isolate potential drivers of a response; they cannot by themselves show how the organism fares amid the full complexity of its natural habitat.

Field observations show organisms in context
Researchers pair chemistry with biological measurements taken in the ocean, ideally at the same time and place. The federal Strategic Plan for Federal Research and Monitoring of Ocean Acidification (2023) identifies measures such as functional-group biomass, species composition, physiology, population dynamics and community-level effects. Reef surveys and calcification measurements can add local evidence about organisms and habitats.
Observations from ships and uncrewed platforms can link biology with the chemistry organisms experience. Satellite observations can reveal broad surface patterns, such as phytoplankton growth, but NOAA says they need ground-truthing with direct ocean measurements for this research. Finding that a chemical change and a biological change occur together can point to an association or mechanism; the pairing alone does not prove acidification caused a particular ecological change.

Models explore ecosystem-scale interactions
Ecosystem models can examine how species responses interact through food webs, including predator-prey relationships, and how those interactions may affect fisheries or other resources. NOAA cautions that ecosystem feedbacks are complex and model uncertainty matters when results are used for management. Models help explore possible consequences; their projections should be interpreted with that uncertainty in view.
Why environmental context matters
Acidification is not the only condition organisms face. NOAA’s cruise guidance identifies oxygen as a co-stressor, while temperature and salinity influence water movement and chemistry. Measuring such conditions alongside carbonate chemistry helps researchers interpret what organisms encounter and avoid attributing every biological change to acidity alone. Effects can vary among species and ecosystems.
Federal and NOAA monitoring descriptions outline these methods for U.S. programs; they should not be read as evidence that every method is deployed uniformly across the global ocean.
