Scientists identify buried impact craters by combining geophysical maps of the subsurface with evidence from drilled samples. Seismic profiles help reveal a structure’s shape; gravity and magnetic data add clues about underground rock contrasts; and cores, borehole logs, and stratigraphy help determine whether the structure contains materials altered by an impact. No single circular anomaly or instrument reading proves the origin on its own.

Why a buried crater is not obvious

Sediment deposited after an impact can cover the original surface and conceal the familiar bowl-shaped form. What remains may be a buried impact structure: a disrupted region of rock whose geometry and materials differ from the surrounding geology. Scientists therefore look for a pattern of evidence below the surface rather than relying on a visible crater.

A circular or near-circular geophysical pattern can suggest where to investigate, but it is not unique to impacts. NASA-hosted guidance describes gravity and magnetic anomalies as clues used when searching for impact structures, not as conclusive diagnoses (NASA-hosted impact-structure guidance).

How the methods fit together

Method What it observes What it contributes
Seismic reflection and refraction Reflections or changes in seismic waves at subsurface boundaries Cross-sections that help map disrupted layers, boundaries, and broad structure geometry
Gravity and magnetic surveys Variations in measured gravitational or magnetic fields Indirect evidence of contrasts in density, magnetization, or subsurface structure
Drilled cores and cuttings Rock and sediment brought up from selected depths Direct samples that can reveal breccia, impact melt, or shocked minerals
Borehole geophysical logs Physical-property measurements along a borehole A depth-based framework for relating samples to surrounding layers and geophysical profiles

The methods answer different questions. Geophysical surveys can cover areas beyond an individual borehole but are indirect; a core samples only a narrow column but lets geologists inspect the material itself. Agreement between the mapped structure, the samples, and the layer sequence builds a stronger interpretation.

How scientists investigate a suspected impact structure

1. Identify a candidate from regional clues

Scientists may begin with a circular or near-circular pattern in geophysical data, or with an unusual subsurface structure recognized in existing geological information. Such a pattern helps identify where more detailed work may be useful; it does not by itself distinguish an impact from other geological causes.

2. Map subsurface geometry with seismic profiles

Seismic surveys send energy into the ground or seafloor and record signals reflected from boundaries between materials. Interpreted profiles show layers in cross-section. Across multiple profiles, investigators can trace curved or disrupted horizons and structural boundaries, then estimate the feature’s broad dimensions.

In the Chesapeake Bay, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that ship-based seismic profiling established the structure’s geometry. Its 1998 fact sheet said the estimate was based on analysis of 1,200 km of seismic profiles (USGS Fact Sheet 049-98, 1998). This is a description of that investigation, not a universal survey spacing or resolution standard.

3. Add gravity and magnetic evidence

Impact can fracture, melt, displace, or mix target rocks, creating contrasts in density or magnetization. Gravity or magnetic measurements may reveal patterns associated with those contrasts and help constrain the interpretation of a buried feature. Their meaning depends on the local geology and how the results compare with other evidence; neither method alone establishes an impact origin.

For Chesapeake Bay, a USGS-indexed record describes seismic profiles, drill-core samples, and gravity data together as evidence for a complex impact crater (USGS Publications Warehouse record for the 1996 Science paper).

4. Drill to examine the materials

Once indirect evidence helps identify promising locations and depths, drilling can recover samples. In the Chesapeake Bay structure, reported core materials included a sandy rubble bed with varied clasts and basement-rock fragments containing shocked quartz and melted grains. A USGS-indexed journal record also describes impact-melt breccias and shock-deformation features in quartz and feldspar.

These materials matter because they can show that rocks experienced processes associated with impact, evidence that a geophysical image alone cannot provide. A core still represents a narrow path through the subsurface, so its findings must be placed in the larger structural and geological context.

5. Connect samples to the wider subsurface

Researchers compare cores and well cuttings with borehole geophysical logs, seismic data, and stratigraphic information. That correlation shows how sampled units relate to layers beyond the borehole and helps distinguish crater fill and impact-modified rocks from younger sediment and surrounding geology.

What the Chesapeake Bay structure demonstrates

The Chesapeake Bay impact structure is buried beneath younger Coastal Plain and marine sediments. Its identification illustrates the distinction between mapping a structure and establishing its origin: seismic profiles helped define geometry, while cores supplied impact-related materials; gravity data added another geophysical constraint. Later work correlated samples, well cuttings, logs, and seismic information to describe its location and geometry.

Published size estimates should be tied to their sources rather than treated as one timelessly exact value. The USGS 1998 fact sheet reported a diameter of 85 km, based on its analysis of 1,200 km of seismic profiles. A 1996 paper, as represented in the USGS Publications Warehouse record, reported an approximately 90 km diameter and an age of about 35.5 million years. The fact sheet gave an approximate age of 35 million years. Differences in mapped boundaries, datasets, and interpretations can yield different dimensions; the figures are publication-specific estimates.

How scientists judge the evidence

A persuasive identification comes from independent observations that tell a consistent story: geophysics maps a coherent buried structure, stratigraphic relationships place it among surrounding units, and sampled rocks show impact-related alteration. A circular outline or field anomaly can nominate a candidate; it cannot substitute for geological confirmation. The available cited accounts establish this integrated approach, not a universal detection rate, accuracy figure, or fixed drilling plan.
