To estimate when an animal died, they may radiocarbon-date suitable bone material; the date’s archaeological meaning depends on where the bone was found and how securely it is tied to its deposit. ZooMS, ancient DNA and isotope analysis can answer additional questions when the material and preservation allow.
How scientists identify animal bones
Zooarchaeologists study animal remains from archaeological sites. Their first task is to establish what part of the skeleton a specimen represents and whether its shape has features that distinguish it from other animals. Analysts compare those features with reference collections of known skeletons. The Florida Museum describes identification as specific as the fragmentary condition permits, while the Illinois State Museum explains the comparative approach to reading ancient remains.
1. Record the find’s context
Before interpreting a bone, archaeologists document its location, layer and relationship to nearby finds. Context anchors a find in time and space, as the Council for British Archaeology’s overview of the zooarchaeology pipeline explains. It also helps analysts judge whether bones belong to the same deposit and whether a date or identification can be connected to other evidence.
2. Identify the skeletal element and compare anatomy
Analysts sort remains by skeletal part and inspect diagnostic shapes and surfaces. A complete, well-preserved bone may preserve more identifying features than a small, damaged or altered fragment. Specialists compare what remains with reference skeletons, narrowing the identification only as far as the evidence supports.

3. Match the level of certainty to the specimen
Some bones can be identified to species; others can only be assigned to a broader group, or remain unidentified. A likely species based on the site’s general setting is not proof that a particular ambiguous fragment belongs to it. The Florida Museum’s zooarchaeology collections page and the Illinois State Museum’s guide to ancient animal remains describe why the condition of a specimen limits how specifically it can be identified.
4. Use specialist analyses when morphology is not enough
When visual comparison cannot settle a question, other methods may add evidence. ZooMS distinguishes patterns in collagen peptides and can help identify fragments that are difficult to assess by shape. Ancient DNA may help investigate species, sex, lineage or domestication. Isotope analysis can provide evidence about diet, environment or mobility. These techniques answer different questions and are not guaranteed to work on every specimen; their value depends on the surviving material and its preservation. Historic England’s overview of zooarchaeology describes the field’s methods and reference resources.

5. Interpret patterns across the assemblage
Identification can be followed by observations about an animal’s age, sex and body size, as well as cut marks, burning and the distribution of skeletal parts. Across a group of finds, these patterns can contribute to questions about diet, hunting and fishing, animal husbandry, seasonality, trade, local environments or ritual activity. The University of Copenhagen’s zooarchaeology overview describes these possible lines of interpretation. A single isolated bone rarely supports a broad account on its own.
How scientists date ancient animal bones
Radiocarbon dating estimates when the animal died
Radiocarbon dating measures carbon-14 in once-living material. When an animal dies, it stops exchanging carbon with its environment; the carbon-14 in its remains then decays. A laboratory measures how much remains to estimate when the animal died. Bone is one of the organic materials that can be dated, according to the U.S. National Park Service’s explanation of archaeological dating.

The measurement applies to the sampled material, not automatically to every object found nearby or to the entire site. To interpret it archaeologically, analysts need to know whether the bone has a secure relationship to the deposit and associated finds. The Oxford Handbook of Zooarchaeology glossary emphasizes secure association; articulated bones in primary deposits can be particularly useful. Its glossary discusses faunal radiocarbon dating for material less than approximately 50,000 years old. That is an approximate method boundary, not a guarantee of precision or a universal limit that applies identically to every sample.
Relative chronology places remains in sequence
Not every chronological interpretation comes from a direct numerical date on a bone. Stratigraphy can show that one deposit lies above or below another, while faunal succession and biostratigraphy can help place deposits in a broader sequence. These approaches depend on the integrity of the context and suitable regional evidence; they establish relationships or broader placement rather than a direct date for each bone.

Which method answers which question?
| Approach | Question it can address | Evidence used | What the result means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comparative anatomy | What animal, or broader animal group, does the bone represent? | Skeletal features compared with reference skeletons | Taxonomic identification; specificity depends on the specimen’s condition. |
| ZooMS | Can a fragment be identified using collagen patterns when anatomy is unclear? | Collagen peptide patterns | Additional identification evidence; success depends on surviving collagen. |
| Ancient DNA | Can genetic evidence clarify species, sex, lineage or domestication? | DNA-bearing material | Genetic evidence for the question tested, if preservation permits. |
| Isotope analysis | What can the remains indicate about diet, environment or movement? | Isotopic evidence in suitable tissue | Evidence about aspects of an animal’s life, not a species identification or direct date by itself. |
| Radiocarbon dating | When did the sampled animal die? | Carbon-14 in suitable organic material | An estimated age for the sampled material; context determines its archaeological association. |
| Stratigraphy and biostratigraphy | How does a deposit relate chronologically to others? | Layer relationships and, where appropriate, faunal succession | Relative sequence or broader placement, not a direct numerical date for each bone. |
The Council for British Archaeology and Oxford Handbook describe the distinct questions these methods address and why secure context matters. The appropriate choice depends on the question, the tissue available, preservation and contamination risks, and how confidently the sample can be associated with its archaeological setting.

An assemblage of identified animal remains can help researchers investigate what people ate, how they hunted or raised animals, which environments were present, and how animals or animal products moved through a community. Those interpretations are strongest when several kinds of evidence agree: the bones’ anatomy, patterns across the assemblage, the site’s context and, where useful, specialist analyses.

- A species identification is limited by the features that survive on the specimen.
- A radiocarbon estimate dates the sampled organic material; it does not by itself date all nearby artifacts or a whole site.
- Context is essential for connecting an identification or date to a deposit and its associated finds.
- ZooMS, DNA and isotope analysis add evidence for particular questions, but their usefulness depends on the material that survives.
