Scientists usually do not sample an exoplanet directly. They estimate its age from its host star and infer its composition from measurements of the planet’s size, mass, and light. Those observations feed into models: density can narrow down broad interior possibilities, while spectroscopy can reveal or constrain gases in an atmosphere.
How do scientists estimate an exoplanet’s age?
In most cases, “the planet’s age” means an estimated age for its host star or planetary system. The estimate comes from stellar evidence, not from a direct reading of the planet. NASA’s Exoplanet Science Strategy describes several approaches, each most useful for particular kinds of stars.
- Asteroseismology: measures oscillations in a star to learn about its internal structure and evolution.
- Cluster or moving-group membership: uses the age established for a group of stars that formed or move together.
- Lithium absorption and surface gravity: use stellar properties that change as stars evolve.
- Isochrone fitting: compares a star’s observed properties with predictions from stellar-evolution models.
- Rotation and activity relations: infer age from how a star’s rotation or magnetic activity changes over time.
These techniques are not equally reliable for every star. NASA’s strategy warns that many empirical methods break down for older, inactive main-sequence stars. It notes that the vast majority of planets orbit inactive, slowly rotating stars older than 1 billion years, a regime in which many such methods are difficult to apply. Rotation-based gyrochronology also has inconsistencies and is useful only in suitable cases.
Why age matters for young giant planets
Age is especially important when scientists study young, self-luminous giant planets through direct imaging. Such planets cool and grow dimmer over time, so an assumed system age affects the mass inferred from planet-evolution models. For other planets, age helps scientists consider possible thermal and atmospheric evolution, but age alone does not reveal what a planet is made of.

How do scientists infer a planet’s bulk composition?
For a planet that passes in front of its star, the transit’s depth constrains the planet-to-star radius ratio. Scientists need a reliable estimate of the star’s radius to calculate the planet’s physical radius. They can estimate the planet’s mass from the star’s motion caused by the planet’s gravity (the radial-velocity method), or, in systems with multiple planets, from changes in transit timing.
Combining mass and radius gives mean density. As ESA’s exoplanet explainer describes, density can help distinguish broad categories such as rocky or gaseous worlds. It cannot, by itself, determine a unique interior recipe: different proportions of rock, iron, water, and gas may produce similar bulk measurements.

What a composition model can—and cannot—tell you
NASA Goddard’s Exoplanet Composition Interpolator illustrates how scientists can use planet mass, radius, irradiation, and age to estimate possible core and gaseous-envelope properties. Its results come from precomputed evolutionary models and depend on the model grid’s assumptions, including solar-metallicity hydrogen-helium envelopes above a rock-and-iron core with Earth-like composition, and no atmospheric escape.
That kind of output is a conditional model estimate, not a direct measurement of a planet’s core. A different set of assumptions or measurements can change which interiors are consistent with the evidence.

How does spectroscopy reveal atmospheric ingredients?
In transmission spectroscopy, astronomers compare the star’s spectrum when the planet is not crossing it with the spectrum during a transit. A small amount of starlight passes through the planet’s atmospheric limb. Molecules absorb particular wavelengths, leaving patterns in the measured light that can reveal or constrain atmospheric gases. NASA and ESA describe water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and other molecules as examples of species that can be probed this way. Webb’s infrared spectrographs can detect these molecular fingerprints.
Scientists also study atmospheric light using emission spectra and phase curves. Phase curves track changes in the combined light of a star and planet over an orbit, helping constrain brightness or temperature patterns. Direct imaging can make it possible to study a planet’s own light, but requires separating its faint signal from the star’s glare. Which method is practical depends on the planet and observing geometry.

Spectra require interpretation
A spectral feature is evidence to interpret, not a self-explanatory label. Astronomers compare observations with atmospheric models, and clouds, hazes, stellar activity, instrument limits, and competing model explanations can weaken or complicate a composition claim.
For example, NASA reported that Webb’s NIRISS instrument observed WASP-96 b and captured a detailed near-infrared transmission spectrum with water features and evidence for clouds and haze. The interpretation compared the observed spectrum with a best-fit model using known properties of the system and assumed atmospheric characteristics. It demonstrates both the reach of spectroscopy and the role of model interpretation; it is not a universal result for all exoplanets.

Which method answers which question?
| Question | Observations or method | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|
| How old is the system? | Stellar oscillations, group membership, stellar properties, rotation, or activity | An age estimate for the host star or system, with reliability depending on the star and method. |
| Is the planet broadly rocky or gaseous? | Transit-derived radius combined with a mass estimate from radial velocity or transit-timing variations | Mean density and broad constraints on interior type, not a unique layer-by-layer recipe. |
| What gases may be in the atmosphere? | Transmission or emission spectroscopy; phase curves and direct imaging in suitable cases | Atmospheric features interpreted with models, subject to observational and modeling limits. |
These methods are complementary, not interchangeable: stellar measurements address age, mass and radius constrain bulk properties, and spectra probe atmospheric properties. Age, irradiation, stellar characteristics, and model assumptions all affect how the observations are interpreted.
