Some Samsung Galaxy phones let you automate battery-related settings, but the headline alone doesn’t identify the routine, phone, software version, or battery problem involved. Samsung confirms that Battery protection and routine actions have been available on some Galaxy software; it does not establish that one routine fixes battery drain for everyone or quantify a battery-life gain.
What a battery routine can—and cannot—do
A routine links a trigger, such as a time or device condition, to an action. On compatible Galaxy software, an action may include turning on Protect battery. Samsung documented this capability in update notes for the Galaxy S10 model SM-G973U1, released April 15, 2022, with Android 12 and One UI 4: Samsung’s Galaxy S10 update notes say users could create routines to turn on advanced settings like Protect battery.
That example confirms the action existed on that model and software context; it does not guarantee the same action, trigger, or menu on a different Galaxy phone. Samsung’s later Galaxy S22 update notes describe changes to Modes and Routines, illustrating that the feature set evolves.
Battery protection changes charging behavior. It does not diagnose a worn battery or establish why a phone loses charge overnight. The exact routine and problem behind the title are not specified, and the cited Samsung material reports no measured battery-life gain from that particular routine.

Check which battery protections your Galaxy offers
On supported devices, open Settings > Battery and look for Battery protection. Samsung’s U.S. guidance describes three options, but availability and behavior can vary by model and software version. Its Battery and power-saving support page explains them as follows:

Samsung India’s One UI 6.1 battery-protection guidance, last updated March 22, 2024, documents Basic, Adaptive, and Maximum for those models; it says devices below One UI 6.1 were limited to an 85% maximum charge. Treat that as regional, version-specific guidance rather than a universal description of every Galaxy phone.

How to see whether a routine action is available
- Open Settings > Battery and check whether Battery protection appears. Note the options and charge controls your phone actually shows.
- Open Settings > Modes and Routines (called Bixby Routines on some older software) and choose to create a routine.
- Inspect the available triggers and actions on your device. If Protect battery appears as an action, you can consider a trigger that suits your schedule; if it does not appear, do not assume another model’s instructions will work on yours.
- Review the routine’s conditions and end behavior before saving it. A routine based on a time or another condition is only useful if that trigger is available and matches when you need charging protection.
Samsung’s documentation verifies a Protect battery routine action on the Galaxy S10 software noted above, not a current, universal setup path or a specific combination such as selecting an alarm group, applying an 80% cap, enabling slow charging, and then charging to 100% one hour before an alarm. Confirm each condition and action in your phone’s own routine editor.
Battery protection is different from power saving
Use Battery protection when your goal is to control charging. Power saving mode and app-sleep settings instead affect how the phone or individual apps operate.

- Power saving mode: Samsung warns that it can affect device and app performance. Background apps may not receive updates or send notifications while the mode is enabled.
- Sleeping apps: Samsung says certain apps that have been unused for about three days and are affecting system health, such as through battery consumption, can be put to sleep. Sleeping can restrict background work.
- Deep sleeping apps: Samsung’s developer documentation says these apps only become active when opened and do not perform background activities such as notifications or updates. The page describes a current inactivity threshold of 16 days, which may change.
Before restricting an app, consider whether you rely on it for timely messages, alerts, or updates. Samsung’s descriptions of Power saving and app-sleep behavior are on its U.S. battery support page and developer page on app management.

A charging cap and an unexplained loss of charge are different problems. Start by checking the phone’s Battery usage screen to identify which apps or system activity used power. If an app is responsible, inspect its background behavior before changing its status. Sleeping or deep-sleeping an app can delay or prevent notifications and updates, so avoid doing so to apps that must remain responsive.

For a phone that still drains unexpectedly, Battery protection alone does not establish the cause or repair battery wear. The Samsung guidance cited here does not provide a diagnostic result or a measured improvement for the specific routine described in the title.
