That design creates a visible center fold and a more delicate inner surface than a conventional rigid phone screen. Battery capacity and playback estimates also need context: they describe specific 2025 models, not a guaranteed number of hours in everyday mixed use.
How a Samsung foldable screen is built
The inner display is a flexible assembly, not a rigid glass slab. Samsung describes a stack with a top protective film, a protective layer over the glass, Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), and an AMOLED-family display panel. In AMOLED displays, each pixel emits its own light. A digitizer layer depends on the model; Samsung says the Z Flip line does not have one.

- Protective film: The fixed surface film helps the screen withstand pressure. It is attached and should not be peeled off.
- Protective layer: This layer helps resist external impacts and prevent fragmentation.
- UTG: Ultra Thin Glass provides a smooth glass surface while remaining thin enough to fold as part of the assembly.
- Display panel: The AMOLED-family panel produces the image beneath the protective layers.
Samsung’s engineering account says UTG begins as thin glass sheets that are coated, cut to precise dimensions, then smoothed and polished before durability testing. Samsung has refined the material and process over generations, but its public descriptions do not give a complete current-model layer recipe or an exact UTG thickness for every device. Calling it “glass” is accurate, but it is specially processed ultra-thin glass in a flexible stack, not ordinary cover glass.
Panel design also changes by generation. Samsung said the Fold4 and Flip4 generation moved from a cluster-type to a scatter-type subpixel arrangement to make grid patterns less visible and text easier to read. That is a specific example, not a specification that should be assumed for every Galaxy Z model.

What the hinge changes about using the phone
The hinge connects the flexible display to the phone’s folding motion and allows some models to remain partly open for hands-free use, such as framing a photo or watching video. The original Galaxy Z Flip’s Hideaway Hinge used a dual-CAM mechanism to hold varying angles and nylon-fiber sweepers intended to repel dirt and dust; hinge designs have changed across generations, so that description does not define every current Galaxy Z hinge.
Fold and Flip models emphasize different daily priorities. The Fold opens into a larger workspace, while the Flip folds into a compact form and uses its outer display for quick interactions. Samsung’s published diagonal display measurements for the 2025 family are below; diagonal size is not the same as usable area in every app.
| 2025 model | Main display | Cover display | Practical emphasis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Z Fold7 | 8.0 inches | 6.5 inches | Unfolded workspace and multitasking |
| Galaxy Z Flip7 | 6.9 inches | 4.1 inches | Compact folded portability and outer-screen quick interactions |
| Galaxy Z Flip7 FE | 6.7 inches | 3.4 inches | Flip-style compact folding |
What you may notice, and how to protect the inner screen
A fine bend or crease at the center can be visible, depending on the viewing angle. Samsung also warns that a heavy external impact may cause colored spots or lines. The attached inner protective film is service-replaceable; do not remove it or apply an ordinary aftermarket film unless Samsung provides guidance for that exact model.

- Avoid concentrated pressure: Do not press hard on the screen, especially near the fold when the device is not fully open. Keep sharp objects away from the inner display.
- Keep particles out: Sand and small particles can scratch or dent the screen and may affect hinge performance. Water-resistance language does not make a phone sand-proof.
- Limit harsh conditions: Avoid very hot or cold storage conditions and prolonged direct sunlight.
- Check the specific model’s rating: Samsung describes IP48 protection for covered models as lab-tested protection against certain particles larger than 1 mm and submersion in up to 1.5 metres of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. Samsung does not advise beach or pool use, and water resistance can diminish through normal wear. Check the exact model and local product information rather than treating this as permanent waterproofing.
Battery capacity is not the same as battery life
Samsung’s listed capacities for its 2025 Fold7 and Flip7 family are typical capacities. Fold7 also has a separately stated rated minimum capacity; the two figures are not interchangeable.
| 2025 model | Typical capacity | Rated minimum |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Z Fold7 | 4,400mAh | 4,270mAh |
| Galaxy Z Flip7 | 4,300mAh | not stated by Samsung on the cited specifications |
| Galaxy Z Flip7 FE | 4,000mAh | not stated by Samsung on the cited specifications |
Samsung says the Fold7 uses a dual battery. It also says the Flip7 gained 300mAh over the Flip6 while becoming thinner through design and battery-energy-density improvements. That engineering description does not establish how much longer any individual user’s phone will last.
Samsung lists up to 24 hours of video playback for Fold7 and up to 31 hours for Flip7. These are manufacturer estimates, not promises of mixed-use runtime. Samsung says actual Fold7 battery life varies with network environment, features and apps, call and message frequency, charge count, and other factors. Brightness, signal conditions, camera use, multitasking, and the way a phone is folded or unfolded can make everyday use differ from a playback claim.
