Robinhood Crypto holds the private keys for crypto in its custodial service, including Bitcoin bought there; customers do not receive those keys. Robinhood says it stores most crypto offline in cold storage and keeps some in online hot wallets for operations, but it does not publish a Bitcoin-specific storage percentage. The company says it believes customers are the legal owners of purchased crypto. Ownership, key control and account protections are separate questions.

Does Robinhood hold actual Bitcoin for you?

Robinhood describes its crypto service as custodial. It holds crypto in company-controlled wallets and manages the private keys to its corporate crypto addresses. You can direct transactions through your account, but you do not personally hold the keys to those addresses. Robinhood does not state that each customer has a separately identifiable Bitcoin address or a particular on-chain coin assigned to them.

Robinhood’s US product page says, “Once you purchase crypto on Robinhood, Robinhood believes you’re the legal owner of the crypto.” That is the company’s stated view, not a substitute for the applicable customer agreement or a determination of legal rights in every circumstance. Legal ownership and direct control of private keys are different matters. Robinhood’s crypto transfer support page explains that customers who want their own private keys can send crypto to an external self-custody wallet.

How Robinhood stores Bitcoin

Robinhood says it uses a mix of online hot storage and offline cold storage. Most coins are held in cold storage, while some remain in hot wallets to support routine operations. Robinhood’s US crypto security help page gives this general description; it does not state what share of Bitcoin specifically is kept in either type of wallet.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Robinhood’s 2025 10-K/A describes custody of settled cryptocurrencies in hot and offline cold wallets, and an architecture that combines multi-party computation with hardware security. It also describes the company’s wallet operations and custody risks. These company disclosures do not amount to a Bitcoin-by-Bitcoin proof of reserves or a public BTC-specific storage figure. What protection applies to crypto held at Robinhood?

Robinhood says crypto held through Robinhood Crypto is not FDIC insured or SIPC protected. Those protections should not be confused with the company’s separate insurance statement: Robinhood says crime insurance covers a portion of assets in its storage systems against theft, including cybersecurity breaches, with underwriting by Lloyd’s syndicates. The cited materials do not say that all assets, customer balances or types of loss are covered. Robinhood’s US crypto page

What changes if you move Bitcoin to your own wallet?

With self-custody, you hold the keys and take responsibility for protecting them and keeping recovery access. Losing the recovery credentials can mean losing access to the Bitcoin; Robinhood says it cannot recover lost Wallet keys or recovery phrases. A software wallet such as Robinhood Wallet and a Bitcoin hardware wallet are different ways to self-custody, not a transfer service or a guarantee against loss. Ledger describes its hardware signer as keeping keys offline and letting users verify a transaction on-device; that is the vendor’s description, not an independent assessment.

Robinhood says eligible customers can transfer crypto to external wallets. Before sending Bitcoin, confirm that the destination wallet supports Bitcoin and that you are using the correct receiving address and network. A small test transfer can help catch an address or setup mistake, though it does not remove the need to protect the wallet and its recovery credentials.

How to decide which custody model fits

  • Keep it on Robinhood Crypto if account-based access and custodial support matter more to you than holding the private keys directly.
  • Use self-custody if you specifically want direct key control and can reliably protect your keys and recovery credentials.
  • Do not treat cold storage or crime insurance as a guarantee. Robinhood describes cold storage as the majority of its crypto and insurance as covering only a portion of assets for specified theft risks.

These descriptions reflect Robinhood’s US service and public statements. Robinhood operates through different entities and arrangements in other jurisdictions, so customers elsewhere should consult the terms for their region. Robinhood’s US crypto page
