In the well-documented Falcon 9 example, the first stage separates after its main boost, steers back toward a landing area, slows with a controlled engine burn, and touches down on landing legs. The second stage continues toward orbit. The recovered booster is inspected and serviced before it can fly again.
Which part of the rocket comes back?
Falcon 9 is a two-stage launch vehicle, and its first stage—not the entire rocket— is the part recovered for reuse. After the stages separate, the second stage continues carrying the payload toward orbit while the first stage begins its return. SpaceX describes Falcon 9 as a reusable, two-stage vehicle in its Falcon 9 overview.
How does a Falcon 9 booster land?
The return is a sequence of controlled maneuvers. The exact trajectory and landing profile vary with the mission and the planned recovery location; not every booster follows the same path.
- Separate: After completing its main boost role, the first stage separates from the second stage.
- Turn back toward the recovery area: A boostback burn can redirect the booster toward a ground landing zone or an ocean droneship. In an October 1, 2026 report, NASA described a Falcon 9 first stage landing at Landing Zone 40 after a boostback maneuver: NASA’s mission report.
- Steer during descent: Grid fins help guide the descending stage. NASA identifies the fins and landing legs as critical landing components and notes that both are stowed during ascent in its Commercial Crew Program Press Kit.
- Slow for touchdown: The booster reignites engines for a controlled landing burn, then deploys its landing legs to touch down. The cited sources establish the hardware’s role but do not provide a complete flight-control sequence or a universal schedule for the burn.
- Recover and process: After landing, the stage must be recovered, inspected, and serviced before another flight. SpaceX says servicing and inspection of flight-proven hardware and procedures create opportunities to learn from reuse; the company does not specify a universal checklist or fixed turnaround time in the cited material.
Where can a booster land?
Falcon 9 first stages have landed on prepared ground zones and on ocean droneships. These are different recovery settings, but the official examples cited here do not establish a full comparison of their performance or cost.

| Recovery setting | What happens | Documented example |
|---|---|---|
| Prepared ground landing zone | The booster returns toward a designated site on land. Its trajectory depends on the mission. | NASA reported a Landing Zone 40 landing after a boostback maneuver on October 1, 2026: NASA report. |
| Ocean droneship | The booster lands on a recovery vessel at sea. | NASA reported an Atlantic droneship landing on “Just Read the Instructions” on December 21, 2021: NASA report. |
What does reuse involve after landing?
A successful touchdown is not the same as being ready to launch again. The booster has to be recovered and processed, including inspection and servicing. SpaceX presents reflight of flight-proven hardware as a way to gain experience with both the hardware and the procedures used to maintain it. The cited sources do not establish a single refurbishment workload, turnaround interval, or cost that applies to every booster or mission.
Reuse is a tradeoff, not a universal guarantee of lower cost or unchanged payload capacity. A reusable stage must return and undergo processing; what that means for a particular mission depends on the vehicle and its operating profile. The sources cited here do not quantify a general payload penalty, per-flight refurbishment cost, or cost saving for reusable rockets as a class.

How often has Falcon 9 flown a reused first stage?
SpaceX’s Falcon Payload User’s Guide, dated May 9, 2025, reports more than 384 Falcon first-stage re-flights as of February 2025 and a 100% success rate for those re-flights. Those are company-published, dated figures—not an independently audited count or a current total for 2026. They describe Falcon first stages, not all reusable rockets.

Payload fairings—the protective covers around a payload during ascent—are a separate recovery effort. SpaceX reports fairing recovery for reuse, but fairing recovery is not part of the booster’s landing sequence; the National Reconnaissance Office’s launch-vehicle information also distinguishes launch-vehicle components and systems. Dragon spacecraft processing and reuse are likewise separate from first-stage refurbishment.
