Yes, a store’s cameras may have recorded a fall, and a connected system may also have created an alert or event log. But whether footage exists, what a detector registered, and whether the store had legally sufficient notice of a hazard are separate questions. Video, alerts, and sensor readings can help reconstruct a timeline; none automatically proves when a spill appeared, who knew about it, or whether the store responded adequately.

What a store’s system may record

A modern incident record may contain more than a camera clip. Depending on the equipment, configuration, and retention settings, it could include original video, a computer-vision event classification, an alert timestamp, delivery or acknowledgement information, and records of a staff response. A connected floor sensor might add pressure, foot-traffic, or moisture readings. These are possible outputs, not evidence that every retailer uses such systems.

The distinction matters: video captures images; a sensor measures a signal; and an algorithm labels patterns according to its configuration. A machine-generated timestamp can help establish when the system registered or generated something. It is not necessarily the time a spill began or the time an employee became aware of it.

Overhead cameras and computer vision

A September 26, 2026 guest opinion by Lipsig Law in iTWire describes using overhead cameras with edge processing to flag spills, debris, and falls and alert staff. Hanwha Vision’s January 2026 vendor white paper describes its WiseAI slip-and-fall feature as analyzing movement over time and classifying posture to generate alerts. Hanwha says the feature applies to supported cameras; that does not establish compatibility with arbitrary CCTV equipment or independently verified accuracy in retail stores.

Hanwha’s paper also says that “20–30% of all injuries” are due to slips and falls, but the cited passage does not clearly identify the figure’s underlying source. Treat that as a vendor-attributed statement, not an independently established population statistic. The white paper’s broader claim that vision-based detection can use existing camera infrastructure and avoid wearables is likewise a vendor statement, not an independent finding.

Smart floors and other connected sensors

Pressure-sensitive tiles or film, foot-traffic signals, and moisture sensors are described as possible ways to register activity or an event on the floor. A pressure reading can indicate a change beneath a sensor’s placement; a moisture sensor can register moisture under its placement and calibration. Neither necessarily identifies the substance, its source, or who caused it. No named retail smart-floor deployment or product is independently confirmed in the available material, so these should be understood as possible system designs rather than settled retail practice.

What an alert can—and cannot—show

An alert may help establish that a configured system classified an event or hazard at a particular time. To interpret it, an investigator would need to know what the system was configured to detect, whether the alert was generated and delivered, who received or acknowledged it, and what happened afterward. A classification is a probabilistic system output, not an eyewitness account.

As Lipsig Law’s iTWire guest opinion puts it, “A fall-detection alert proves someone hit the floor; it does not prove the store had constructive notice of the spill.” More broadly, an alert alone does not establish when liquid arrived, whether staff saw it or received an alert, whether the area was inspected, how quickly anyone responded, or whether the response met the applicable legal standard. Those standards vary by jurisdiction.

Keep the timeline’s separate clocks distinct

For a useful reconstruction, distinguish the time an event may have occurred from the time a sensor registered it, the time software generated an alert, the time a message was delivered or acknowledged, and the time a person took action. Confirm how the system clocks were synchronized and whether a timestamp refers to the camera, sensor, server, or alerting platform. A system log is easier to interpret when its configuration, routing, access, and retention records are available alongside the footage.

How strong are published detection results?

Published performance numbers are specific to the study setting and should not be read as a promise about a supermarket aisle. The U.S. Department of Transportation ITS Deployment Evaluation summary, posted November 19, 2025, reports precision of 0.70–0.92 and recall of 0.75–0.90 for a modeled railway-station study published in IEEE Access in 2020. The evaluation concerns rail-station imagery and notes limits on the availability and privacy of source images; it is not a retail accuracy test.

A 2025 paper, “Privacy-aware fall detection and alert management in smart environments using multimodal devices,” reports an F1-score above 0.98 for a three-view thermal-image configuration and 0.93 for wearable-sensor machine-learning algorithms. Those are results from that study’s smart-environment evaluation, not validation in retail stores. Differences in camera angle, obstructions, lighting, floor layout, crowding, sensor placement, and the definition of an event can all affect how a system performs in a different environment.

A historical U.S. HHS ASPE report on aging services technology noted that large-scale effectiveness studies of sensor-based fall-detection systems were few in its review. That assessment is historical and should not be treated as a current measurement of retail deployment. No directly applicable, independently verified statistic establishes how widely these systems are used in stores or how effectively they prevent retail injuries.

What to ask a store to preserve after a fall

If you are seeking evidence after an incident, make a prompt, specific written request to the store or its claims contact. This is practical preservation guidance, not legal advice: rights, procedures, and deadlines depend on the jurisdiction and circumstances. A request does not guarantee that material exists or that it will be provided voluntarily.

  1. Identify the incident clearly. Give the date, approximate time, store location, and the aisle or area involved, along with your name and a reliable contact method.
  2. Ask that relevant video be preserved. Specify the incident location and a reasonable time window before and after it, including views that may show the floor, the approach to the area, and staff activity. Ask whether footage from adjacent cameras is relevant.
  3. Ask about associated electronic records. If the store uses analytics or connected sensors, request preservation of relevant event alerts, timestamps, alert delivery or acknowledgement records, sensor readings, and response or inspection logs. You can also ask that the store preserve the system configuration and clock-synchronization information needed to interpret those records.
  4. Keep a record of the request. Save a copy and note when and how it was sent and any response. Avoid assuming that a request changes the store’s retention schedule or guarantees access.
  5. Get local legal advice when needed. If the incident resulted in an injury or a dispute, consult a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction about applicable deadlines and formal evidence-preservation options.

Video and event metadata may have different retention periods, and a system may overwrite or delete material under its own schedule. Whether a particular record still exists depends on the equipment, settings, and actions taken. A store’s process for exporting or preserving footage and logs is therefore as important as the detector itself.

How to evaluate a retail detection system

There is no complete head-to-head retail comparison established by the sources cited here. For a real deployment, the following questions help distinguish a useful incident-recording system from a feature label or a demonstration:

Evaluation area What to establish
Signal and event Whether the system uses visible or thermal video, wearables, pressure, moisture, or a combination—and whether it detects hazards, falls, or both.
Test setting Where the system was evaluated, which camera viewpoints and obstructions were present, how events were defined, and whether performance was independently validated in a comparable retail environment.
Processing and data Whether analysis happens on-device or remotely, what raw footage and derived metadata are retained, and who can access or export each type.
Alert handling How quickly an alert is routed, who receives it, whether receipt is acknowledged, and what escalation occurs if no one responds.
Retention and evidence export How long video, sensor readings, alerts, and logs are kept; how they can be exported; and how a preservation request affects routine deletion.
Operational reliability Camera compatibility, installation, calibration, maintenance, false alerts, and how changing layouts or operating conditions affect detection.
Privacy and governance What customers are told, who controls the data, access controls and security protections, and whether safety monitoring is separated from analytics or identity tracking.

Privacy is part of the evidence system

Networked cameras and sensors can collect information beyond the event that prompted a safety alert. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada’s February 2016 paper on the Internet of Things and retail discusses tracking and profiling, transparency, consent, accountability, access and correction, and security risks. It warns: “Without adequate protections, these developments may pose significant risks to our privacy.” The paper is archived and offers foundational analysis, not a statement of current law.

For a store, useful governance questions include who controls raw video and derived event data, whether processing is local or remote, how long each data type is retained, who can export it, and how access is logged. A safety purpose does not make broader customer analytics or identity tracking the same thing, and privacy-conscious settings do not automatically remove legal obligations.
