The particles store energy from sunlight or indoor LED light and release it gradually as an afterglow. It is a real experimental result, but it is not the same as a plant producing light biologically—and it is not a proven home project.
How do the succulents glow?
The 2025 study, “Sunlight-powered multicolor and uniform luminescence in material-engineered living plants,” describes a material-engineering approach: phosphor particles are introduced into succulent leaves. After exposure to light, the particles release stored energy as visible afterglow. The plant is not making light through its own bioluminescent metabolism.
Phys.org’s report on the study says the particles were about 7 micrometers across—roughly the width of a red blood cell—and spread through the leaf tissue. The team reported that the whole leaf could glow, with green, red, and blue versions. Green particles lasted longest, with afterglow reported for up to two hours after a few minutes of sunlight or indoor LED exposure. That is a reported experimental result, not a guarantee for every color or plant.
In the researchers’ tests, succulents produced a stronger effect than golden pothos and bok choy. The report attributes this to channels and spaces inside succulent leaves that help particles move through the tissue. First author Shuting Liu, a researcher at South China Agricultural University, said: “The particles diffused in just seconds, and the entire succulent leaf glowed.” Phys.org’s report of the study includes the team’s results and attributed comments.

The Firefly Petunia is a useful comparison, but it is not the same invention. Light Bio describes a petunia that glows through a biological process. Its official site currently says the 2026 season has closed and that it plans to return in Spring 2027; availability may depend on season and location.
Can you make a glowing succulent at home?
The published coverage does not establish a validated home injection method or long-term effects on plant health. The researchers were still studying long-term safety, and the glow fades. The experimental preparation cost reported by first author Shuting Liu was a little over 10 yuan (about US $1.40) per plant, excluding labor; that is not a retail price, a kit price, or evidence that the method is ready for consumers. Do not treat the study as a safe DIY injection recipe.

How to make a safe decorative succulent night light
For a similar look without altering the plant, arrange battery-operated LED fairy lights around a succulent in an open lantern, bowl, or planter. This lights the display from outside; it does not make the succulent itself luminescent.
- Choose a small succulent and an open lantern, bowl, or planter. If planting it, use cactus or succulent potting mix.
- Arrange battery-operated LED fairy lights around the pot or through the lantern, keeping the light set’s battery compartment accessible.
- Check the light set’s instructions and rating before using it outdoors; use it only in locations for which it is rated.
- If the container has no drainage holes, water sparingly and take care not to leave the succulent sitting in excess water.
