A Magic: The Gathering reprint can lower a card’s price by adding copies to the market, but the size of the effect depends on how many copies actually reach players and collectors—and whether demand keeps pace. A reprint announcement alone does not predict a particular price drop.
Do MTG reprints lower card prices?
Often, a reprint puts downward pressure on a card’s price because it increases supply. But the outcome is not automatic: a scarce reprint may add relatively few copies, while a widely opened set can put many more into circulation. If demand remains strong, prices may fall only modestly or may not follow the expected direction.
Cardmarket Insight describes rarity, print run, how much product is opened, playability, how many copies players need, and condition as factors that influence prices. These considerations explain the mechanism, but they do not produce a reliable percentage forecast for a particular card. Cardmarket’s supply-and-demand overview also notes that its examples are illustrative, not controlled analysis.
What determines how much a reprint affects the price?
How many new copies reach the market
Rarity affects the odds of opening a card, while a set’s print run and the amount of product opened affect the overall number of copies available. A card reprinted at a scarce rarity in a limited product may see a smaller supply increase than one included at an accessible rarity in a heavily opened set.

Whether demand stays strong
Playability and the number of copies players want can sustain demand. If many players still want the card after the reprint, additional supply may be absorbed without a dramatic price change. If demand is weaker, new copies can have a more noticeable effect.
Which version is being priced
“The card’s price” can refer to different objects. Compare the exact printing, condition, language, and foil or other premium treatment. A new printing can make a card’s function more accessible without making every older version interchangeable to collectors.

Mark Rosewater’s design article distinguishes exact reprints from close functional variants and more fundamental changes. In his words, “A reprint is trying as best it can to be as close as possible to the original.” That terminology matters when comparing collectible printings: a mechanically similar card is not necessarily the same collectible. Rosewater’s article on reprints discusses the design distinction, not price effects.
Can a limited premium reprint have a smaller effect?
It can, if the release adds relatively few copies compared with a broadly opened set. Cardmarket uses Secret Lair fetch lands and later Masters-set reprints as examples of how different release types can have different supply effects. These are illustrations, not a rule that every premium release has little impact or every Masters reprint has a large one.

The key question is not simply whether a reprint exists, but how much new supply becomes available relative to ongoing demand. Product cost, rarity, and opening volume all shape that answer.
How much does a reprint affect the price of the original printing?
There is no dependable universal percentage. Cardmarket gives a historical example of a card that spiked to $100 before an Ultimate Masters reprint, fell to $50 after release, and later declined; the article says it then hovered around €10 with four nonpromo versions available. Those are figures reported in that article as a past example, not current quotes or a typical outcome for other cards.

Historical market data also shows why a guaranteed downward prediction would be misleading. A 2017 working paper by Nick Huntington-Klein and Alasdair Young analyzed 698,319 sold copies of 537 cards across 909 stores, using online sales collected from May 10, 2012 through July 27, 2014. In its sample, 65.2% of cards fell by more than 5% from the beginning to the end of the new-set observation window; 23.7% rose by more than 5%, and 11.0% stayed close to their initial price. The study’s reported mean decline was about eight cents per week during that historical post-release window.
Those results describe price movement around new-set releases in that sample; they do not isolate the causal effect of reprinting older cards. The authors focused primarily on new rare and mythic cards during the first months after release, so the figures are context about market variation—not a reprint-specific estimate or a present-day rate. How to assess a reprint’s likely price impact
- Identify the exact card and version. Separate an identical reprint from a close functional variant, then note the original printing’s condition, language, and finish.
- Estimate the new supply. Check the reprint’s rarity, the set’s print run where known, and how much product is being opened. A reprint’s presence alone does not tell you how many copies will reach the market.
- Consider ongoing demand. Playability and the number of copies players use can help determine whether added supply is likely to be absorbed.
- Compare like with like in current marketplace data. Check the date, geography, exact printing, condition, language, and finish. Distinguish listed prices from completed-sale prices; an asking price is not proof that buyers paid it.
This framework helps explain the direction and possible scale of market pressure, but it cannot turn an announcement into a precise forecast. The available historical example and study do not establish a current, card-by-card price series or a controlled contemporary estimate.
Which cards are eligible for reprints?
Wizards of the Coast’s Official Reprint Policy, dated May 4, 2016, states: “Any card that isn’t on the reserved list may be reprinted.” It also says: “The exclusion of any particular card from the reserved list doesn’t indicate that there are any plans to reprint that card.” In other words, being outside the Reserved List means a card is eligible under that policy; it is not evidence that a reprint is planned. The policy says Reserved List cards will not be printed again in functionally identical form. Read Wizards’ Official Reprint Policy.
