Bone size and shape can support an estimate of sexual dimorphism in a fossil population, but they usually cannot establish the sex of an individual fossil on their own. Reliability depends on the species, skeletal element, sample quality, age and sex composition, and how much traits overlap between sexes. There is no single accuracy rate that applies to all fossils.
What a size or shape pattern can—and cannot—show
Researchers may find that specimens in a population differ in average size or in particular skeletal features. That can support a hypothesis of sexual dimorphism: systematic differences between males and females of a species. It does not automatically show that a specific large specimen is male or a smaller one female. Population-level evidence and individual classification are different claims.
When sex is inferred from size or shape alone, careful wording matters: the pattern may be “consistent with” dimorphism or “supports a hypothesis of” dimorphism. A stronger individual assignment needs evidence that identifies sex independently of the trait being tested.
Why fossil estimates can be unreliable
Small, incomplete, or biased samples
Fossil assemblages may contain few individuals, incomplete skeletons, or an uneven representation of sexes. The bones needed to compare a trait may be missing, and the specimens that survive may not represent the original population. A 1999 methods test examined how sample size, skewness, sex ratio, and within-sex variation affect estimates; it also identified incomplete skeletons, sex-biased representation, and a lack of independently sex-identifying traits as practical problems. Overlap within each sex
Individuals of the same sex vary. If that within-sex variation is large, male and female measurements can overlap substantially, making a dividing line unreliable. In his 1994 comparison of four estimation methods, Jeffrey M. Plavcan concluded: “However, no method can accurately estimate low to moderate levels of dimorphism, particularly if intrasexual variability is high and sex ratios are skewed.” The limitation is conditional: it concerns modest dimorphism in the presence of high variation and skewed sex ratios, not every fossil analysis. Age, skeletal region, and other sources of variation
Age can affect the expression and assessment of skeletal differences. The degree of dimorphism may also differ across skeletal regions, and even among traits within a region. A result based on one bone or feature therefore cannot automatically be used as a sex proxy elsewhere. A 2024 review of hard-tissue sexual dimorphism in early hominins discusses this regional variation and how traits shaped by sexual or social selection can complicate taxonomic interpretations. SWGANTH guidance on skeletal sex assessment likewise notes that age can affect dimorphism and that differences may involve shape, features, or relative size. This is forensic guidance rather than a fossil-specific validation study, so it offers context about skeletal variation—not a measure of fossil-estimation accuracy. What dinosaur and hominin evidence can support
For dinosaurs, Mallon’s 2017 review finds statistically robust inferences especially difficult because of limited sample size, experimental control, and methodological challenges. It recommends using an unambiguous sex indicator—such as eggs, embryos, or medullary bone—when one is available to help establish sex before testing whether other traits differ. This is a warning about the difficulty of the evidence, not a conclusion that dimorphism can never be inferred. Read the 2017 dinosaur review.

Hominin studies face a related problem: a trait’s expression in one skeletal region does not necessarily predict dimorphism in another. The 2024 review’s findings argue against treating a single cranial, dental, or postcranial feature as a universal indicator across hominins—or across fossil groups generally.
How newer statistical methods handle uncertainty
The 2021 “posterior density peak” (pdPeak) method uses Bayesian inference to estimate probability densities for dimorphism and within-sex variance. Its value is that it can represent uncertainty in a sample-level estimate rather than simply assigning each specimen to a binary category. It does not supply missing specimens, independently establish their sex, or determine an individual fossil’s sex with certainty. Read the 2021 pdPeak study.

How to evaluate a published fossil-sex claim
When comparing studies or interpreting a claim about a fossil, check the following:
- What is being claimed? A difference between population averages is not the same as a reliable sex assignment for each specimen.
- Which species and skeletal element were studied? Findings for one taxon, bone, or trait do not automatically transfer to another.
- How representative is the sample? Look for the number of individuals, missing elements, and reasons the sample might overrepresent one sex or age group.
- How much variation and overlap are present? Ask whether the analysis accounts for within-sex variation, sex-ratio skew, and modest differences.
- Is there independent validation? Check whether any sex-specific indicator anchors the interpretation without relying on the same size or shape pattern under investigation.
- How is uncertainty reported? A result that describes distributions and uncertainty is more informative than one that only sorts specimens into two groups.
What one comparison study does—and does not—tell us
A 2023 study, Sex estimation from morphology in living animals and dinosaurs, reported that morphology alone allowed sex assignment for about one third of 139 animals of known sex in its studied sample. That result illustrates how limited morphology-based assignment can be in that particular sample. It is not a fossil-specific validation result and must not be treated as the accuracy rate for fossil estimates generally. Read the 2023 study.
