AI text detectors can indicate that writing resembles text produced by a language model, but their scores are not dependable proof of who wrote it. They can wrongly flag human writing, miss AI-generated passages, and behave differently depending on text length, language, genre, and editing. Treat a result as one limited clue—not a verdict about authorship.

What an AI text detector score can—and cannot—tell you

A detector classifies text based on patterns its model associates with AI-generated writing. It does not observe how a document was written or identify the person who wrote it. A flag therefore does not establish that a named writer used AI, and a low or absent score does not establish that they did not.

For example, Turnitin defines its AI percentage as the share of qualifying prose that its model flags as likely AI-written or AI-written and modified using a paraphraser. That percentage is not the probability that a student or other named person used AI. Turnitin says its current reports represent scores from 0% through 19% with an asterisk rather than a numerical value because false positives are more common in that range; reports generated before July 8, 2024 may show numerical values below 20%. Turnitin’s guide to the AI Writing Report explains how to interpret the result.

Why detectors make mistakes

False positives and false negatives

A false positive is human-written text labeled as AI-generated. A false negative is AI-generated text that the detector fails to identify. These errors create different risks: false positives can lead to unwarranted suspicion or penalties, while false negatives can create false reassurance.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

OpenAI’s former AI classifier illustrates both problems, but its results apply only to that product and its test—not to every current detector. In its 2023 English challenge-set evaluation, it identified 26% of AI-written text as likely AI-written and incorrectly flagged 9% of human-written text. OpenAI said reliability typically improved with longer inputs, but discontinued the classifier on July 20, 2023 because of its low accuracy. OpenAI’s announcement is a historical example, not a current benchmark for other tools.

Independent testing also found that results varied substantially among the tools evaluated. In a 2023 study, Weber-Wulff and coauthors reported false-positive probabilities ranging from 0% to 50% and false-negative probabilities from 8% to 100% across tools in their specific test. They also found that obfuscation worsened the tested detectors’ performance. Those ranges should not be read as present-day error rates for every product. The study’s methods and results provide the relevant context.

Language and writing background

Bias findings depend on the detector, sample, and test method. Liang and colleagues’ 2023 study found that all evaluated detectors flagged 19.8% of the human-written TOEFL essays in their sample, and at least one detector flagged 97.8%. These figures describe that study’s essays and tools; they are not universal rates for non-native English writers or for every modern detector. The study in Patterns documents the findings.

Turnitin later reported that, among submissions meeting its 300-word minimum, the false-positive-rate difference between its L1 and L2 English groups was small and not statistically significant. Its evaluation also found a greater difference and rates above its target for documents that were too short. This is a vendor-reported evaluation, and it does not resolve the results of other tools, populations, or uses. Turnitin’s report on its English-language-learner evaluation describes its findings.

Length, genre, and format

Turnitin’s current guide requires at least 300 words of prose for an AI Writing Report and lists English, Spanish, Japanese, and Arabic as supported languages. It says the model does not reliably assess short-form or unconventional writing, including bullet points, tables, and annotated bibliographies, or non-prose such as poetry, scripts, and code. A score from text outside a tool’s stated scope is especially difficult to interpret. See Turnitin’s guide to its AI writing detection model for its stated scope and capabilities.

Editing can change the result

Rewriting, paraphrasing, and other edits can change how a detector scores text; the 2023 Weber-Wulff study found that obfuscation reduced the performance of the tools it tested. A 2026 preprint by Park, Jeong, and Kim reports that professional editing style can also confound detector outputs, with scores responding differently across detectors. That work is preliminary, so it supports caution about style effects rather than a universal claim about how any particular edit will change a score. Read the preprint.

How to assess a detector or interpret its percentage

There is no single accuracy figure that applies across vendors, languages, genres, model versions, and editing conditions. When evaluating a tool or reviewing an output, check the specific test behind the claim rather than relying on a headline accuracy number.

  • Separate the error types. Look for false-positive results on verified human writing and false-negative results on generated text. A blended accuracy score can hide important differences.
  • Check what was tested. Note the language, genre, text length, model versions, and date of evaluation. Results from one population or tool do not automatically transfer to another.
  • Check the text’s fit. Confirm that it meets the product’s language, length, and format requirements before assigning meaning to its score.
  • Understand the number. Determine whether a displayed percentage means a share of text flagged, a model score, or a calibrated probability. Do not assume it expresses the chance that a particular person used AI.
  • Look for evidence beyond the vendor’s claim. Transparent test data and independent replication make performance claims easier to evaluate.

When comparing products, use a documented set of known-human and known-generated samples that reflects the people and writing formats relevant to your use. Report false positives and false negatives separately rather than collapsing them into a single accuracy figure.

What to do when a detector flags someone’s writing

Do not use a detector score as the sole basis for an accusation or other consequential decision. Turnitin itself cautions against using its score as the sole basis for adverse action and acknowledges that false positives are possible. A careful review can include drafts, notes, document history, the assignment or work context, and the writer’s explanation. None of those items automatically proves authorship; together, they can inform a fairer assessment than a score alone.

  1. Check whether the text was eligible for assessment. Confirm the detector’s language, minimum-length, and format requirements.
  2. Record what the result actually represents. For example, distinguish a percentage of qualifying text flagged from a probability of a person’s authorship.
  3. Review relevant context. Consider available drafts, notes, document history, and the writer’s account without treating any single artifact as conclusive.
  4. Give the writer a meaningful chance to respond. Do not infer misconduct from polished prose, writing style, language background, or one detector result.
  5. Apply the relevant standard using the full evidence. A detector output can be one limited signal, but it should not replace a fair process.
