An RCA-to-HDMI converter is an active device: it takes analog composite video and stereo audio from an older source, processes them into an HDMI-compatible signal, and sends that signal to a modern display. It needs its own power because the RCA cables carry the source’s audio and video, not the electricity needed to run the conversion electronics.
What an RCA-to-HDMI converter does
The yellow RCA plug carries composite video. The red and white plugs carry the right and left analog audio channels. A converter with matching AV inputs receives those signals and provides an HDMI output for a television or monitor. For example, the Techly IIDATA SPDIF-71 manual and product pages from AVSL and Megasat document this analog AV input, HDMI output, and separate power connection.
Direction is important: for a VCR, DVD player, or game console with RCA outputs going to an HDMI display, the converter must have RCA/AV inputs and an HDMI output. An HDMI-to-RCA converter does the reverse and will not serve this connection.
Why it needs a separate power supply
The converter’s electronics sample and process the analog video and audio, format the results for HDMI, and drive the HDMI output. That active work requires electrical power, supplied through the converter’s dedicated power port. The RCA leads carry the source’s AV signals; they are not a substitute for that supply.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Power requirements vary by model. The Techly IIDATA SPDIF-71 manual specifies DC 5 V/0.5 A, 2 W consumption, and a micro-USB power port. AVSL’s cited converter also specifies 5 V, but connectors and current requirements can differ. Use the voltage, current rating, and connector specified for your own model rather than assuming a generic USB adapter or cable is suitable. Techly’s setup instruction is: “Plug the power supply into the device to get started.”
What happens to picture quality and resolution
The converter changes signal format so an HDMI display can accept an older analog source. Some models offer HDMI output modes such as 720p or 1080p, but that output setting does not restore detail absent from the original composite video. Adafruit cautions that its adapter “doesn’t magically clean up NTSC signals and make them 720p/1080p”; it retains the quality and resolution of the input.

Compatibility also depends on video standard and aspect ratio. Product support varies: cited examples list NTSC and PAL, while some include standards such as SECAM, PAL-M, or PAL-N. A model may also warn that a 4:3 picture can appear stretched unless display scaling is adjusted. Check the converter and display settings when the image looks distorted.
How to connect one
- Connect the source’s yellow video plug and red/white audio plugs to the converter’s matching RCA/AV inputs.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the converter’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the television or monitor.
- Connect the power supply specified for that converter model.
- Turn on the source and display, then select the HDMI input used for the converter. If the converter offers output modes, select a supported option such as 720p or 1080p.

- Audio and aspect ratio: Confirm stereo audio is carried into HDMI and check how 4:3 material is displayed.
- Included items: Check whether the product includes a power supply, cable, or only a lead; box contents differ by model.
What to check if there is no picture
If the display shows no output, follow the signal path from source to screen:
- Confirm the converter is powered and its required supply is connected.
- Check that all three RCA plugs are connected to the converter’s AV inputs and that the source is producing audio/video.
- Make sure the HDMI cable runs from the converter’s output to the display’s input.
- Select the HDMI input the converter is connected to on the display.
For a snowy or unclear picture, the Techly manual recommends trying another HDMI cable or a shorter one. That is model-specific advice rather than a guaranteed fix; source condition, signal standard, cabling, and device compatibility may also affect the result.
