The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) raised its policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on October 7, 2026. That does not mean every home-loan EMI or bank deposit rate rises by the same amount immediately. The effect depends on a loan’s benchmark, spread and reset terms, while banks have flexibility over deposit rates and may adjust them at different times.

What the October 7, 2026, repo-rate increase means

The RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and changed its stance to calibrated tightening. The committee cited a less benign inflation outlook and broadening price pressures in its October 7 policy release.

The repo rate is a policy rate, not a rate that automatically sets every customer’s borrowing cost or deposit return. RBI describes monetary transmission as a process that can affect money-market rates, bond yields, bank lending and deposit rates, and asset prices. It can take months, and sometimes more than a year, for policy changes to work through the financial system.

The RBI dashboard showed 5.25% at 1:00 p.m. on October 6, 2026. That was an earlier snapshot; the October 7 MPC decision set the repo rate at 5.50%.

Will your existing home-loan EMI increase?

Possibly, but the repo-rate move alone cannot tell you how much your EMI will change or when. First check whether your loan is floating or fixed and, for a floating loan, which benchmark it follows. The contractual spread, reset date and lender’s repayment calculation also affect the result.

Since October 1, 2019, scheduled commercial banks other than regional rural banks have had to link new floating-rate personal or retail loans to an external benchmark, such as the RBI repo rate or specified Treasury-bill rates. Banks set a spread over the benchmark under RBI rules and the loan contract. A repo-linked loan may therefore transmit a repo change more directly, but its actual rate and reset timing still depend on the contract. Not every home loan is floating or directly linked to the repo rate.

When a floating-rate benchmark rises, the lender may increase the EMI, extend the repayment period, or use both approaches. The adjustment need not happen on the day the RBI announces a decision: transmission takes time, and the lender applies the loan’s reset terms.

What to do when your floating rate resets

RBI guidance says regulated lenders must offer borrowers options when a benchmark reset raises the rate. The available choices can affect monthly cash flow and total interest differently, so ask the lender for an updated repayment schedule for each option it offers.

Option What changes What to compare
Increase the EMI Monthly payments rise; the loan may keep a similar repayment period. Whether the higher payment fits your budget and how much interest remains over the revised schedule.
Extend the number of EMIs The EMI stays unchanged while repayment takes longer. The longer commitment and the total interest shown in the updated schedule.
Combine a higher EMI with a longer repayment period Both the monthly payment and the number of payments change. The payment level and total interest relative to the other options.
Switch to a fixed rate for the remaining loan period The rate becomes fixed for the remaining tenure if the lender offers this under its board-approved policy. The fixed-rate terms, any switching or administrative charges, and the resulting repayment schedule.
Partly or fully prepay You repay some or all of the outstanding loan before its scheduled end. How much you can pay without weakening your cash reserves, plus any applicable prepayment charges.

Switching, service or administrative charges may apply. The lender must disclose applicable charges transparently; check the sanction letter, reset communication and current charge schedule before deciding. RBI’s options are not a universal recommendation: the right comparison depends on your outstanding balance, income, remaining tenure, charges and cash-flow needs.

What your lender must tell you

For external-benchmark changes, RBI guidance requires the lender to communicate an increase in EMI or loan tenure. It also requires quarterly loan statements showing, at minimum, principal and interest recovered to date, the EMI amount, EMIs remaining and the annualised interest rate for the loan’s tenure.

Will savings-account and fixed-deposit rates rise?

A repo-rate increase may influence savings-account and term-deposit offers over time, but deposit rates are not mechanically tied to the repo rate. RBI says deposit rates are deregulated, giving banks flexibility in how they mobilise funds. As with lending rates, transmission can take months or longer, and the timing and size of any change vary by bank and product.

Do not assume that a 25-basis-point repo increase will produce a 25-basis-point increase in your deposit return. Nor does it guarantee an immediate change to an existing fixed deposit. Check the bank’s currently posted rate, the deposit tenure and withdrawal terms, and whether a quoted rate applies to new deposits, existing balances or both. No verified, comparable schedule of bank-by-bank deposit rates following the October 7 decision is established here.
